Rafah is the only crossing that connects Gaza to the outside world without passing through Israel. Israeli forces took control of the border in May 2024, and completely blocked access for years. In February of this year, they finally opened the crossing partially, only to then close it again immediately on the first of March.
There are 20,000 people who urgently need medical evacuations out of Gaza, and around 50,000 Palestinians stranded in Egypt wishing to return to their homes and families in Gaza.
In Ali's Truthout article, one Palestinian woman asked for her statement to be printed anonymously, fearing harassment:
"Life in Egypt is difficult because I don’t know anyone here. I left Gaza only when it was necessary, holding on to the hope of going back home. I want to go home. If not now, Allah knows when it might be. My name isn’t on the list yet; I only became aware of the registration link very late and registered in January. The waiting list is long because only around 50 people are allowed through at a time. I do hear about the harassment and torture, but I pray that Allah will make my return easy and safe."
This quote breaks my heart. It reminds me deeply of conversations with my friend Mahmoud, who is also stranded in Egypt, waiting to be reunited with his family in Gaza. He is terrified to experience torture just to return home, and now even that option has been taken away as the crossings were closed only one month after opening.
Mahmoud told me this week:
"I love everyone in Gaza and throughout the world. We strive to live safely in our land. But we are forbidden from doing that. I wish I could return to my country. This is an injustice beyond imagination and suffering beyond human endurance. It's strange that we are only a few kilometers away from our country, yet we cannot enter it except by Israeli order. It's strange that my future is slipping away while I'm searching for a country that will accept me as a Palestinian refugee. No country allows us to obtain residency or citizenship. We live in harsh conditions and cannot escape them under the occupation. I swear to God, most of the time I think about where to go and what to do."
Food, medicine, and fuel prices are already surging due to closures, and Mahmoud's family in Gaza relies on donations for all of their basic necessities. One bag of flour is now $200, and last week they only raised $700 in donations. Please donate to Mahmoud's family so they can survive and be reunited.
My wife @cannilyuncanny hosts Mahmoud's family's campaign and transfers donations directly to Mahmoud's sister Mahrah (@mahrahpalestine) in Gaza. The campaign is vetted by @90-ghost and was shared by fairuzfan.
Bear in mind that this is a technique that anyone can use on anyone about anything.
For example, you probably want to be suspicious when megacorporations start rebranding themselves as "diverse" and "sustainable".
"Vegan leather" replacing "pleather" as the most frequent term for the material, as the greater populace began thinking that anything vegan is good and anything plastic is bad, is another good example if you want something specific.

Update on Ahmed's Campaign
My friend Ahmed (@ahmedaldaniii) is a young man, still a teenager. Israeli attacks exposed his mother to toxic gasses while she was pregnant with Ahmed, and he was born with a disorder that affects the growth of his teeth.
He urgently needs dental implants, but these are unavailable in Palestine because Israel has destroyed so much medical infrastructure, blocked the flow of supplies, and killed so many health providers.
Ahmed's fundraising has been thoroughly vetted (He is #198 on the @gazavetters list, and I've personally spoken at length with multiple other vetted Palestinians in Gaza who directly know him in person).
Despite the wealth of proof of his identity, his previous GoFundMe campaign was cruelly deleted, meaning he must start from scratch fundraising all over again. He'd raised over 16,000 euros and now all that money is being returned to donors.
If you have donated to Ahmed before, please send that amount to Ahmed's new GoFundMe campaign right away.
His family home was destroyed in bombings and his family has been repeatedly displaced. They struggle to afford basic necessities like food and clean water. It is vital to raise enough funds to pay for these necessities as well as enough to afford travel to receive adequate dentistry.
Please donate what you can.
My name is Ahmad Dany. I am writing to you from the heart of the daily suffering we … Ahmad dany needs your support for Help Ahmed And His F

“Cats don’t actually love you”
A cat is a small creature in the middle of the food chain that is fully aware that you are a very large thing that could stomp its head in at any moment and yet it chooses to rest its tiny little head on your leg for a nap and spreads out on the floor near you exposing its belly and its most sensitive organs. It brings dead mice and bugs to you to share food.
Don’t you get it? This tiny thing trusts you. It wants to help you too. It licks your leg thinking that it’s helping. It kneads on you to find comfort. It shares its body warmth with you in the cold and gives you your space in the heat. It hisses at other mammals it sees outside including other cats in an effort to protect its family.
Cats love you so so much. But they will keep trying to eat plastic.
