“tortured into insanity”

Listen, I am sick and tired of this trope that’s everywhere in fiction (Neville’s parents in Harry Potter are just one example).

I have literally been tortured into insanity – it is NOT a ~fate worse than death~ (at least that’s not how I see it, even though at times I wished to die), it did NOT make me evil or turn me into a timebomb and it is NOT the end of a person’s development and growth. Recovery is possible. No matter how horrifying the trauma was or if there was brainwashing/mind control/conditioning involved, with the right support, recovery is possible. Change and growth are definitely possible, so is agency.

Please, write trauma survivours as three-dimensional characters and don’t use trauma as a cheap plot device in ways that dehumanise and alienate survivours. Let us have some dignity.
