A German regional court has ruled that Google is directly liable for the content of its AI search overviews. According to the court, previou
Let’s fucking go
This is HUGE.
1. The court holds Google responsible for statements made by its AI, considering them Google's statements (search engines have limited liability for results in their engine as they're the words of other sites/companies/people), meaning when their AI lies/hallucinates they're liable for the defamation/harm resulting from those statements.
2. Google's defense that customers are generally aware of the lack of reliability and are responsible for fact checking was dismissed. As the court pointed out, that would "significantly diminish" AI Search's stated purpose and it can't be distinguished from Google's business practices/statements as a search tool.
3. Studies have found about 91% of Google's everyday AI responses are accurate, leaving millions of searches per HOUR with potential liability for falsehoods. 56% of correct responses weren't supported by the sources the AI listed. Both of which mean Google is now liable for a LOT more AI "errors."
4. Google was held liable for 80% of court costs in this case and this precedent is expected to reverberate around the world. This is a massive shift from the 3rd-party search provider role Google has previously played and it comes right as they've tied ALL searches to their AI search.
TL;DR Google reeeeeally stepped in it this time.
Additional source and more details below. Absolutely thrilled to say that this is real. And yeah, it's huge.
For all the reasons above AND ALSO because this particular lawsuit is a defamation case
Privacy lawsuits are hard because most privacy laws are super super weak, and there's very rarely a lot of money or enforcement backing privacy laws for...twenty million reasons, really...
But defamation suits? Those have teeth.
(In large part because, at least in some countries and including in the US, defamation laws protect public figures the least - and "public figures" legally includes most if not all politicians, and a hell of a lot of other rich ppl too)

A German court has ruled that Google can be held directly liable for false claims made by its AI Overviews, a decision that could put a serious legal dent in the whole “the AI made me do it” defense. According to The Next Web, the Regional Court of Munich issued a temporary injunction after Google’s AI Overviews wrongly tied two Munich publishers to scams, subscription traps, and dubious business practices. The court treated those AI-generated summaries as Google’s own statements, not just ordinary search results pointing to third-party pages. That distinction matters. Search engines have traditionally had more protection because they index and link to other people’s content. AI Overviews changes the machinery. Google is not just showing the web anymore. It is summarizing it, rewriting it, and sometimes apparently hallucinating a tiny legal grenade into the results page... This is still a preliminary injunction, not a final ruling, and Google can appeal. But for publishers, brands, SEOs, and anyone watching AI search swallow the results page, the message is clear: if Google wants to be the answer engine, courts may start treating it like the publisher of those answers.

this is gonna sound stupid but i was talking abt this with a friend of mine the other day, but you can really tell when ppl view the concept of being transgender as a completely binary experience based on the way they do trans headcanons
My postcard for pride month.
Inspired by this 510 BCE depiction of Sappho, and the joy of being in rooms of fellow gay & trans people making music & art, telling stories, and playing games together lately.
I'm grateful to the many people I've met in my area over the past few years who have been working hard to build spaces for that to happen in -- especially Cas, Lids, & Ryan.
Happy Pride, everyone.
let the contemporary record show mr beast was pretty ignorable for his whole career if you were just like, busy.

I am not lying when I tell you it is. Literally. All. The. Same.
“Secret disgusting straight group is trying to overtake us and lying about being a part of (label I conveniently dislike)! Every other group we shit on before is actually okay but this group is REALLY SERIOUSLY SECRET STRAIGHTS TRYING TO DESTROY US!!”
There it is. the discourse for the next decade. Packaged with a bow just for you. When you see it tell them it’s literally just EVERY DISCOURSE I SAID UP THERE repackaged. Because it is. <3
Subchapters:
They’re ‘appropriating’ our language. Not because ‘coming out’ is something that accurately described their experience but because they’re evil secret straights who want our stuff.
They want our ‘resources’, because acceptance and support are not available in unlimited supplies and going to support groups that you don’t need is something evil secret straights do.
They have ‘privilege’. Unlike us, who are not all a combination of axis of oppression and privilege because of the many aspects of our identity. We’re 100% oppressed all the time in every way.
They don’t ‘suffer’ like we do. Because it’s totally okay to demand that people publicly expose their traumas in order to be accepted by us. That’s not ‘bullying others the way we have been bullied’ at all.
tbh it’s a red flag that the inventor of chiropractic got the idea from a ghost. bones are like the #1 thing ghosts don’t have
I bring a real 'actually people who are pregnant do deserve some special consideration because they are effectively at least temporarily disabled if not permanently after some complications' vibe to the party that a lot of people don't seem to like
Imagine Grace defined his name as the elegance definition of grace and Rocky spends years thinking how fucking ironic this clumsy leaky space blobs name is.
Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.
And Rocky has to suddenly reconcile that the clumsy leaky blob that saved his life twice, that almost certainly doomed himself to come back for him, name is Mercy.
I cannot produce the words to describe how deeply I am disgusted by the way a lot of people talk about being nonbinary as a temporary stepping stone to becoming "full-trans."
I cannot emphasize enough how exactly accurate this is to working in production
the problem with employment is it gives you money to purchase video games but it takes away your time to play video games. Mao spoke of this
