it sucks that the overwhelming majority of medical messaging around salt/sodium is "evil poisonous substance that you're definitely already eating way too much of," because like. you do still need it. (trust me, as a POTS-haver, I've had to completely rewire my own brain about salt.) and you need more salt when the entire northern hemisphere is hot enough to fry an egg on. ever tried sucking down the recommended 64oz of hydration per day entirely as water, only to find you're peeing constantly without any of the purported benefits of being "hydrated"? assuming you don't have another medical condition that causes frequent urination, your body probably needed more salt/electrolytes to be able to hold onto that water and make use of it. if there was ever a time to keep a sports drink/pedialyte/etc within constant reach, it's when the heat index is 110°F/43°C.

What level of professional assistance would one realistically need to adopt and gentle a mustang? Like, nearly anyone can train most dogs with understanding of how to handle animals and maybe some YouTube videos, but mustangs are feral and Bigger Than People. How much of it is "at home" type work vs "send horse to horse boarding school"?

Short answer: most people should not try to do the mustang thing at home on their own. Neither should most people with most dogs but I digress

My big asterisk is that it will fully depend on the specific mustang and the person’s own experience - Thea wanted to be domestic so bad. Throwing a 12 year old child at her was fine. Giving child me the 7 year old band stallion I want now would have been a mistake, and when I make that jump, I’ll do it with professional trainers on speed dial.

tess is right: for most people and most horses, the smart thing to do is to send the mustang to a pro for gentling--but each horse is different, and each person is different, so there are exceptions and edge cases and creative options, and each individual match of horse and human may be ready to go it alone at a different stage.

there are lots of different factors affecting how steep of a challenge each horse will be. older horses will tend to be more difficult than younger ones. a 9 year old that was gelded 2 months ago will be a much more serious and potentially dangerous animal than a 3 year old that was gelded as a weanling. certain HMAs produce more or less docile personalities, on average (a Goshute or an Augusta Mountains or a Muskrat Basin or a Salt Wells Creek horse might be recommended for a beginner; a Sulphur or a Kiger would unilaterally not).

when we have our first conversations with prospective clients, the most important thing we're trying to suss out is the person's experience and confidence with green horses, high level performance horses, stallions, and other challenging animals. amateurs buying their first personal horses are absolutely good potential matches for some mustangs, but that sort of person is going to need a much gentler horse with a much stronger foundation than, say, somebody who has ridden (as one of our recent adopters has!!!) the Gaucho Derby or who used to foxhunt (as one of our clients did) in Ireland.

plus, there's the infrastructure factor. mustangs must be housed in solid fencing at least 6 feet tall. at RAMS, we use 6 foot 135lb galvanized steel panels designed to contain bison. a 1200lb 15.2hh recent stud ran into one head first once and bent it slightly.

so, generally speaking, for the average horse person, I would say the smart option is to work with a professional--not only because mustangs are large and feral and potentially dangerous, but because the pros often have a ton of industry knowledge that can keep you safe in the long term. the relationship between RAMS and its clients starts way before an unhandled horse arrives in our pens; we spend a lot of time consulting with people to make sure they select a horse that will be appropriate for their goals and skill level. someone who's looking for an upper level endurance prospect is going to get different advice from someone who wants an eventual trail pony for their mother in law!

all that said, there are options for people who really, really want to gentle their own mustangs while being smart about it. weanlings and yearlings are much more likely to gentle down and adapt quickly, and they technically only require 5 foot solid fencing--though of course then you have a long wait ahead of you, if you're hoping to ride (and honestly i've seen enough feral babies trying to climb fences that i would recommend the 6 feet anyway). some professional programs may offer mentorship, consultation, clinics, demos, or even pen rental. we had someone gentle her own 12 year old recently gelded stallion in our pens last year--she reeeeeally wanted to do it herself, and the responsible middle ground for her was to board the horse with us and trade chores for coaching. the big guy was a serious horse, and he taught her a LOT, but i was right there when needed, and he naps in her lap now.

the tl;dr is probably that you should at LEAST have a professional available to you to give advice and for if you end up in over your head. i love mustangs very very much, obviously, but unhandled horses are not to be underestimated.

Just adding to agree with those above and to give another example of a middle ground option.

I gentled my mustang through the kind of middle ground option that the-barn-rat mentions. I had a ton of experience with performance dressage horses and with schooling naughty ponies (I was the small teenager who was the one to get on the little ponies when they were getting too naughty) and I ended up at the Monty Roberts learning centre in California. I know Monty Roberts is not without controversy, and I ultimately decided not to become a Monty Roberts instructor, but I learned useful things there, like how to handle and gentle mustangs, an approach to horse training that I’ve found enduringly useful, and I met Mr Mustang there.

Mr Mustang has been such an incredible part of my life for the past 17 years, and I do think that mustangs are underrated generally. I will often encourage someone to pursue a mustang provided they’re willing to put the work in, but yeah, definitely have some expert assistance!

I tested this theory in the wild the other day at work. I was on a call with my department lead and a few other folks and I replied to an email the DL had sent me, thinking that, because he was on this call, he wouldn't notice when I sent it and would not catch me multitasking.

However, he replied to said email within five minutes, asking a question that required an answer. So I answered and was like "Also, I was going to apologize for answering emails during this call, but I see we're both here at the Devil's Sacrament, so I don't think an apology is necessary."

I watched him read that on screen and try not to laugh. And then at the end of the call as everyone started saying goodbye, he goes, "Hey, MJ, I meant to tell you. I like your shoelaces."

And I looked straight into my camera, stone cold serious, and said, "Thanks. I stole them from the president."

And the rest of the team was like, "What...the fuck...?" before he abruptly ended the call for everyone.

So now my DL and I know this about each other. He could be any one of us.
