So tired of shallow readings of texts that begin and end with "these two men were gay for each other" ESPECIALLY bc it almost always goes hand in hand with dismissing all female characters out of hand. Yes nick was gay for gatsby but daisy is an extremely important part of novel and gatsby's relationship to her is absolutely vital. Yes goodnight sweet prince is a little fruity but I also care deeply about the tense gender politics of hamlet and ophelia's relationship and her position as a foil to him and also isn't it SO much more interesting if Hamlet really did love her? If he loved her and yet? Like I'm not saying these men aren't gay but it's not worth sacrificing the women of the story

Nick is obsessed with Gatsby, and enthralled by his life, and his wealth, and horrified by his single-minded obsession, and unable to look away, to stop himself from being complicit. In the depths of his paranoia, Horatio is the only person Hamlet seems to trust implicitly to tell him the truth, and eventually, to retell the truth of his life to others. These are JUICY dynamics and they are not at all served by the impulse to turn a tragedy into a love story with no more substance than "these problems could be solved if they just got gay married"

it’s crazy to me that every seed in existence is a little chemical computer taking readings of temperature and moisture and minerals and all that to see if it’s able to grow yet and they’re doing crazy stuff like going into full dormancy and waiting for species-specific conditions etc etc and some seeds will do this in the size of a dust particle (see: orobanche) and some will pack in extra starch and food and do it in the size of a coconut or something… just dissected this flower seed at work that was a woody two-compartment capsule with one embryo per compartment, the whole seed a little smaller than a dime, and I swear to god it had a full soybean’s worth of embryo and food packed in there. it’s just unfathomable to me

Like how. How do you do that. Like presumably some energy has to be consumed for the seed to remain alive, but the amount is so minuscule that the seed can keep chilling for a vast amount of time

If I remember correctly, mullein seeds can keep for over a century in the soil. Which is a cool evolutionary strategy, because it means a Mullein plant today can breed with a Mullein plant from tens of generations ago.

Fun fact, the reason a bunch of weeds will sprout up when you till up the ground or disturb it in some way, is that the weed seeds were there the entire time, and some weed seeds are triggered to sprout by exposure to light after having been buried for a while

Amaranth is like this. When you disturb the soil, the amaranth seeds that may have been in there for years detect light, and they're like "LETS FUCKIN GOOOOO!" because disturbed conditions are perfect for Amaranth to grow in.

also while i’m ranting about gender i always see debate about whether girls are rewarded for being tomboys or not and it’s like. actually girls are rewarded for mirroring whatever the situation demands of them. girls can’t be too prissy and refuse to play in the creek, but girls also can’t show up to girly events covered in mud. girls can’t have makeup art as a hobby or else they’re superficial, but if they never wear makeup they’re a slob and dumpy, etc. it’s not that girls are universally rewarded or punished for being tomboys, they’re rewarded for bending over backwards to always be exactly right for any given situation and punished for breaking those boundaries. so yes a classically pretty girl who cleans up nice is rewarded when she can ALSO be a tomboy. but a girl who is a tomboy all the time is definitely punished for never being able to achieve that prerequisite feminine side. this debate is over now thanks
