The Swern is a good oxidation for alcohols to ketones/aldehydes in the presence of other functional groups. It’s very tolerant and won’t mess up your protected oxygens or anything else. So selective to 1st and 2nd alcohols

The Swern Oxidation is a good oxidation of alcohols that works on primary and secondary alcohols to form either an aldehyde or ketone. The mechanism for this reaction starts by activating DMSO via oxyl chloride. Afterwards the activated DMSO is attacked by the alcohol. The protonated alcohol is deprotonated by triethylamine and with a second equivalence of base, a methyl group is deprotonated to form a carbanion. This hydrogen on the hydroxyl carbon is removed by the carbanion and the electrons move and kick off dimethylsulfide and forms the oxidized product.

The Grignard reagents are a great pathway to understand and are a good start to organometallic chemistry. In RED is the formation of a basic Grignard reagent. Using a organohalide like bromobenzene, the Grignard reagent will form by adding fresh magnesium in dry Diethyl ether (or just an aprotic solvent). The reagent is made when the magnesium inserts between the benzene and the bromide, forming the benzene-magnesium bromide compound seen above. However it's commonly drawn with a covalent bond going from the magnesium to the benzene but in reality a carbanion is formed at that spot and the bond acts in between a covalent and an ionic bond. This lets the Grignard act as a great nucleophole. The BLUES text shows the synthesis of triphenylmethanol by reacting two equivalents of the newly made Grignard reagent with one equiv. of ethyl benzoate. The nucleophiles are very attracted to the carbon in the ester and attack it, sending the electrons up the oxygen and forming a tetrahedral intermediate. The oxygen sends down the electrons to reform the carbonyl and shoot off the ethoxide group, which is a better leaving group and anything else at the moment. We then form a diphenyl ketone which is attacked by the second equivalent of Grignard. Once it forms the tetrahedral intermediate, however, nothing leaves easily and the oxygen is protonated via acid work up. I messed up slightly by not making the arrows go both ways since the phenyl rings can get knocked off and then reattack but eventually it will push to the final product.

First identified in 1915 by Henry Dale, Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter and was in fact the first one to be identified. It has uses in both the Central nervous system and the Peripheral nervous system as a modulator. In the CNS, it is known to have inhibitory functions where as in the PNS it actually activates muscles by opening ligand-gated sodium channels. In the CNS, it has a variety of effects on arousal and reward when acting as a neuromodulator. IT has an interesting structure as a polyatomic compound with an ammonium in between four carbons. AChCl is commercially available.

Diazepam is a benzodiazepine and well-known sedative used to combat all sorts of conditions like anxiety, depression, seizures, and even restless leg syndrome. While having a wide range of uses, it also comes with some bad paradoxical effects like actually worsening seizures. It is most well known for subduing anxiety attacks since diazepam rapidly sets in. It should be noted that it is highly advised not to overuse diazepam due to easy dependency formation.

My boyfriend is thinking of making tiles with elements on them like the periodic table for coasters n' stuff. Not like a whole periodic table on the tile but an element on it. I think it'll be so cute and I'm wondering if anyone here is interested?

What do you do when you get a new tablet but don’t have time to draw because you have studying to do?

Why, you make study guides, naturally.

This is actually going to be the first in a full set of reference charts (in all subjects) that I intend to keep for future use. The nice thing is that, since they’ll be on my computer, not on paper, they won’t take up physical space and will be easy to keep track of and hard to lose. If for any reason I need a hard copy, I can always print them up.

This one is a guide to common functional groups. Yes I know my colour coding doesn’t make much sense but I was colour coding more for the sake of using pretty colours than for actual study purposes so I’m okay with it.

P.S. If anyone who’s actually good at organic chemistry sees any mistakes in this please please please tell me because I plan to keep this forever as a reference.

I don't have a chart but i can make one sometime! 

the best things to start with are your alkanes, i believe i have a few posts on functional groups but i'll make a chart soon!
