“You’ve met your match, evil creature!” Five year-old Elliot Yeager shouted from across the living room to his father, who seemed generally uninterested in the game he had been forced into playing. “Now… prepare to die!” He shouted as he raised a cheap plastic sword up in the air a la Braveheart and charged towards to other side of the room.
Stella was doing her best to control her giggles; after all, she was the damsel in distress, and damsels did not giggle when they were in danger. She quickly cleared her throat and began to play along. “Oh please, Sir Elliot, hurry!” She pleaded as she dramatically raised her hand to rest it on her forehead, not noticing Jason’s eye roll.
Elliot leaped onto his father with a loud cry, earning a painful groan from him. He raised his sword up in the air once more before bringing it back down to lodge it in the small between Jason’s arm and side. He waited a brief moment for his react, but there was nothing.
“Dad,” he whined as he pushed himself off Jason, “you’re supposed to be dying!”
Jason pulled himself off the floor with a scowl, causing the sword to fall from its place. “Well I just don’t get why I always have to be the bad monster,” he grumbled.
Elliot sighed and crossed his arms across his chest before explaining, “I told you, it’s because mum’s too pretty and I’m too cool, so it has to be you!”
Jason furrowed his brow. “So you’re saying I’m ugly and lame?” Elliot opened his mouth for a response, but not before Stella swooped in to stop yet another bickering between the two of them. “Okay, here’s the plan,” she began, placing a hand on both of her boy’s shoulders. “Daddy will do a very dramatic death scene, and then you will go get ready for bed? Can you do that for me, Sir Elliot? Mr. Monster?”
Elliot pouted for a brief moment, but nodded in agreement, while Jason rolled his eyes yet again to show that he was on board as well. He took a deep breath before bringing his hand up to his “fatal wound.” He moaned in pain and gave a few sputtered breaths before falling back onto the carpet with a thump.
The boy raised his hands in the air and prepared to let out a victory cry, but was once again cut by his mother. “Go wash up for bed,” she politely ordered and watched as her son scampered off towards the bathroom. When the door was shut, she crawled over towards her husband and hovered over him, bringing her head down to plant a small yet passionate kiss on his lips. When his eyes opened, blue meeting green, she smiled and said, “I should have mentioned that I’m actually a magical princess with the power to revive monsters.”
He let out a small laugh before wrapping his arms around her waist, gently flipping her over so that she was lying right next to him on the floor. He nudged her temple slightly before sighing into her hair. They lay there in silence for a brief moment before he decided to break it. “He’s really something else, isn’t he?”
“He sure is,” she said with a nod, then turned towards him. “I wonder where he gets it from… seriously.”
The two of them broke out into a small giggle fit before leaning in to share yet another kiss, but were stopped by the sounds of a little boy fake gagging and repeatedly shouting “gross!”
They could always continue after bedtime.
