Found on many historic estates, they are a devices designed to avoid obtrusive fencing so when the gentry used to look out to the horizon, they couldn’t see where their land ended and where the countryside began. The name "ha-ha" is thought to have stemmed from the exclamations of surprise by those coming across them, as the walls were intentionally designed so as not to be visible on the plane of the landscape.
