I’ve been having a lot of thoughts about Gabistat so here’s my little ramblings <3

Fair warning: I have not read the books, so I’m working off of what I know from the show and other people’s analysis

Going into TVL, I knew Gabistat was going to happen, but was not prepared for how grossed out I was at the first couple of episodes. That said, as time has gone on, I still absolutely hate the ship and think it’s nasty and abusive, HOWEVER I’m coming to understand why it happened, and what it says about Gabi and Lestat’s characters.

Mutually, both Gabi and Lestat find solace in each other as the only people who respected one another in their mortal lives. Gabi, who was put in an arranged marriage and forced to have kids she didn’t want, and Lestat, who was physically abused by all of his other family members, naturally gravitate toward each other for comfort. That’s normal. What’s not normal is how that relationship developed.

From Gabi’s perspective, Lestat is everything she wishes she could have. He has autonomy and authority in a way she never could, at least as a mortal. This also connects to her gender, as her dressing masc (in the books) allows her to express that autonomy when she is perceived as a man.

From Lestat’s perspective, Gabriella is the only person in his mortal life that he could turn to for comfort. When she took advantage of him, he dismissed it because if she left him, he wouldn’t have anyone else.

Also, as a side tangent, I think Lestat’s relationship with Gabi was the beginning of his hypersexuality. The wires for “connecting with another person” and “sexual attraction” got crossed in his brain in way that they’re not supposed to. Because the most important person in his life wanted sex from him at an early age, Lestat believes that’s all he’s good for.

Anyway, this might not make sense. But the TLDR is that as much as I hate Gabi and Lestat’s relationship, I think I understand it.
