YOU ARE A REGULAR TODD. YOU CAN BE AN ASSISTANT.

the thing is that a lot of people say they want a serial killer girlfriend but what they actually mean is a sexy genderbent version of jason. they could never handle someone like bart from dghda
Some dghda textposts because I got bored

I am watching Dirk Gently's holistic detective agency for the I don't know how many-th time and once again I am overwhelmed by how absolutely brilliant the final scene of the last episode of season 1 is. The tonal shift from the peaceful happiness to the unease when you realise what is happening, Dirk picking up the Lux De Jour flyer that says "we'll never let you go" just as Balckwing comes for him, Bart staring down a literal army with a tank armed only by a rock (and you know she'll be fine no matter what) Martin telling Vogel to get Amanda out of there and what it says about the severity of the situation, and finally the amazing shot of Todd having a pararibulitis attac, screaming in pain as the lyrics "first things first get what you deserve" play, paralleling the end of episode one when he won the lottery and oh how the turns have tabled
dirk gently’s autistic detective agency or whatever the fuck its called
not saying dirks problems wouldve been fixed if todd held his hand and did the thumb rub thing
but
love how todd loses all coherent thought when dirk is in danger
Sounds intense. I like intense.
Amanda: AGDHSJBDJSKS
Dirk: what's that?
Amanda: it's a keyboard smash
Dirk: how do I do it?
Amanda: just press anything
Dirk: 7

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency 2.01 “Space Rabbit”
oh yeah also i forgot about the staggering amount of s1/s2 parallel scenes and and imagining if the show had continued how many of those parallels would build and build. anyway in a perfect world there would be a completely incomprehensible hostage scene on a bridge in literally every season
at the end of S1E1, dirk says to todd, “but you’re okay, right ???” this is, upon first thought, an absolutely wild question. dirk was there when todd’s apartment got wrecked, when dorian died, he knew about todd getting fired, how could he be okay ? and then you consider dirk’s life, having everything stripped from him by the government for the first half of his life, being tossed from one bizarre and frightening state of disaster to the next for the rest of it, and you realize that dirk probably has very little concept of how important a home can be, and how losing it can absolutely devastate someone. and then you take it a step further, and realize that the only tangibly fixable issue dirk would be able to deal with would be physical injuries. the emotional pain caused by watching a man die in front of you is floaty and difficult to unpack, but you can disinfect and bandage and stitch most injuries if you try hard enough. and in the grand scheme of dirk’s life, things start to click a little closer to making sense
thinking about how todd brotzman and suzie boreton parallel eachother and how suzie was never suppose to be a part of any of the events of s2 which makes me think that maybe todd wasnt suppose to be there either but chose to be
which also makes me think that dirk chose todd specifically to be his best friend (like the universe didnt decide this and it happened in a fixed timeloop so it will always happen) but todd choosing to go to the hospital was post-timeloop
idk where im going with this i just Have Thoughts about the themes of choice and freewill within dghda
Do you ever think about the moment when Dirk comes out of the trunk of the car and literally wraps himself in Todd’s arms and has so much excitement and joy seeing him. Then, he doesn’t hug Farah. He just kind of pushes her shoulder softly…
Cause I do… I think about that a lot.
I know this post was originally commenting on Dirk and Todd’s relationship but I wanna also ramble a little about Dirk and Farah’s relationship bc honestly I love them, that’s just how their friendship works.
Farah isn’t a very touchy/huggy person and Dirk knows this and respects it. We see it in S1 too when Farah is emotional at Patrick Spring’s house and Dirk doesn’t really know what to do so he pats her shoulder. I think that was the beginning of a really wonderful friendship for them, in that moment they both realized they didn’t know how to comfort or be comforted and they found a likeness in that awkwardness. So while Dirk can convey his love and his appreciation for a person in a hug, he conveys the same thing to Farah with a less touchy gesture bc he knows she doesn’t particularly like to be touched. So they do shoulder bumps, shoulder pats, little pokes, high fives, and other gestures that seem less intimate but for them it’s the same as a hug.
I LOVE THIS CONCEPT! I think I cried, but it’s so true!!
They just have such a great friendship and it’s not talked about too often but honestly I love them so much and their mutual awkwardness!!neither of them know how to be “normal human beings” with “normal emotional responses” and so they just do their own thing and it’s so wonderful….
