fighting the problematic stereotype of 'only the bad guys are weird sex perverts' by making the good-hearted protagonist an even weirder sex pervert
To be honest, I don't agree with the most popular interpretation of why Riki is in love with Iason. I do understand where this interpretation comes from and it does make sense to a certain extent, but I feel like it ignores a lot of important facts that are needed to understand why is that Riki is in love with Iason.
In my opinion, Riki did not fall in love with Iason because he realized Iason desired him and understood that he was more than a coldhearted machine. While Katze making Riki realize this is the catalyst for Rikiâs feelings for Iason to completely develop, this is not either the reason why this feelings developed on the first place or the starting point for this feelings. We have to remember that Riki starting to develop feelings for Iason is something that is alluded since vol.7, with the text explicitly saying that the reason why Iason was able to make Riki say the truth of what happened was because of the existence of a bond between them. The feelings that Riki has towards Iason in this part of the story are also implied in the extras. In cage of foolish love, Riki recognizes Iason while he's disguised, and the way the scene is presented and the comment that Orphe makes, leads us to believe that the reason why Riki is able to recognize him is because of the existence of a bond between them.
Considering all of this information, it's a little strange to think Riki is in love with Iason because of what Katze told him, since his feelings were developing way before that happened.
So, that leads to the question, why do I think Riki is in love with Iason? I think the reason why Riki fell in love with Iason is something that has to do a lot with the themes Ai no kusabi wants to explore and also something that has to do with the psychology of Riki as a character. In the first place, I think Riki felt sub-consciously attracted to the kind of person Iason was, he felt attracted to someone that challenged him. But the main reason why I think that Riki fell in love with Iason is because Iason made him discover a part of himself, a part of himself that wasn't so tied to pride. At the side of Iason, he also felt this part of him, a part that wasn't well seen by his society, accepted and even celebrated in the form of his sexuality.
I understand that my explanation may seem weird and convoluted, but we need to understand that in a lot of ways, Ai no kusabi is a story about identity. We can even see the same thematical pattern on the reasons why Iason is in love with Riki. Iason is in love with Riki because he feels attracted by the person he is, yes, but he is also attracted to the way Riki makes him feel human and to the way Riki connects him to humanity. By being by the side of the other, Riki and Iason discover parts of themselves that are rejected and condemned in their respective societies.
This feels so gross⊠this feels good
this is why i can't have my playlist on shuffle, cause one of ank tracks will come on, and i can't skip it, so i'm just reliving the emotional damage and having the biggest crush on the voice of Iason and Riki

Being in a fandom for 20+ years is weird because youâll see posts like, âHow come I never see people mention xâ and itâs like. We did. We talked about that a lot, actually. Actually itâs something that came up. And itâs hard not to be like, âYeah, we discussed this fifteen years ago.â Half of this fandom wasnât even born when these discussions happened. Wild.

Ai no Kusabi : character analysis through cigarette psychology or « Maybe finally an explanation to why everybodyâs always smoking (aside from the obvious) »
I stumbled across an interesting picture online about « cigarette psychology ». Since the characters in the first AnK smoke so much, I decided to give a shot to identify the way(s) each character holds their cigarette. I havenât seen anybody talk about this before and I do not know if it was a deliberate artistic choice from the animators to « hide » all these details, or Iâm just reading too much into this.
Anyway, it becomes very interesting to analyze the characters and how they may feel during these scenes. Iâll only do Riki and Katze here, from the 92-94 OAVs. Luke and Guy (2012âs), and others smoke too.
Ok, letâs start with Katze, of course since heâs the first that comes to your mind when talking about smoking !
Katze : The direct, cautious businessmen from the sidelines.
There were three patterns I could find in Katzeâs cigarette mannerism :
Pattern E : Very tense individual, direct, straight-toward, inclined towards stubborness.
E1 : Just before Katze starts to talk about his past as Iasonâs furniture. Iâd say heâs feeling tense?
E2 : Katze talking to Kirie, asking him if itâs a yes or a no. Thatâs straightforward. Maybe has a little of F?
E3 : Extinguishes his smoke before ordering Rikiâs capture. Is very direct.
Pattern C : An intellectual, a very brainy type of guy, a contemplative character.
C1 : Katze welcomes Riki in his office. Switches in his black market boss persona. Brains are in motion
C2 : In the aircar outside of Rikiâs. Thinking to himself about Riki and Iasonâs relationship, and quoting the title. Here has also that « man from the sidelines » behavior.
Pattern I : Very pessimistic, excessive in business caution.
I : Reporting to Iason and talking about moving Riki to Apathia and the risks of him working on the black market. In business mode, but much more focused.
Riki : Pessimistic, contemplative dreaming mongrel (plus a bit of Iason)
C : Here, he is on the balcony, in contemplative state ; remembers the past, with hints of pessimism.
E1 : tense after finishing his cigarette, his (not) « last one ».
E2 : returning to Eos, leaving the slums and Guy. Made his choice.
Pattern H : A dreamer, always off on a tangent.
H1, H2 : Iason and Riki share a smoke. After both acting out of character, each confessing their love for each other (Iason saving Riki, Riki returning to Iason). Are they dreaming ? It doesnât matter anymore, theyâre both smiling at last.
Tell me what you think about this and if you agree with my choice/interpretation.Â
Aaaand more AnK works that I have not shown before, with one of them I had the honor to join an interesting project ^.^ I like to draw in the 90s anime style, it is the best.
