imo the people who bring powerpoints listing all of their traumatic experiences to their therapy appointment have the wrong idea about what therapy is for. i think a lot of us traumatized people are so swept up in the drama of what happened to us and rehashing it over and over when that won't necessarily help us and can make us worse. yes, a lot of these taboo life experiences deserve to be spoken about. but it gets to a point.
i used to think my early childhood trauma was just about the most fascinating thing that could ever happen to a person. really. i used to fantasize about the day when the story of me and my dad would end up on a really haunting episode of This American Life. I thought that it defined me and I couldn't stop being interested in it. and then i met several other adults and heard completely gruesome, batshit traumatic backstories from them, too. and then i lived a few years and about a dozen other horrible things happened to me, and some of them had a lasting effect and some not so much, and i came to realize that your trauma is not a particularly unique or fascinating thing about you. it's just another one of those things that makes you just some guy. and that can breed great compassion for all the just some guy's around you, instead of making you consumed with yourself.
I got an ask that was real bummed at me for saying traumatized people can be really self-absorbed but like: I'm talking about me her.e And a lot of us. at a particular stage in time. if hearing that traumatized people can be a little Too fixated on their trauma and a little Too fixated on themselves stings you, you're probably just not at the stage of trauma recovery where you can even begin to think about that yet. if you're still actively being traumatized in the ways that hurt you, you probably shouldnt try to sort it out. a lot of the early stages of trauma recovery typically make people very *reactive* and *sensitive* and they tend to engage in pretty dogmatic thinking, and that is fine. that is a stage of coping and you're firm in what you will and will not tolerate thinking about at that point in time because doing so helps keep you safe. but eventually you come to see that it also keeps your world small, and you change your ways a little. you stop thinking of yourself solely as a victim and the world as being filled with snarling narcissists who are mean to you in ways that youre powerless against. but early on? it's pretty damn common to be TRAPPED in the drama of what happened to you. if the post isn't for you right now, it's not for you right now. most things in life will not be for you. and when you've moved into a state of resilience and have enough support (thats crucial), comments like these wont sting so much.

Transcript:
Y'all better quiet down! I've been trying to get up here all day for your gay brothers and your gay sisters in jail that write me every motherfucking week and ask for your help! And you all don't do a goddamn thing for them! And they write STAR, not the woman's group! They do not write women, they do not write men, they write to STAR! Because we're trying to do something for them! But you all tell me to go and hide my tail between my legs! I will not put up with this shit! I have been beaten, I have had my nose broken, I have been thrown in jail, I have lost my job, I have lost my apartment for gay liberation, and you all treat me this way?! What the fuck's wrong with you all?! Think about that! I believe in the gay power, I believe in us getting our rights, or else I would not be out there fighting for our rights, that's all I wanted to say to you people. Come and see people at STAR House on Twelfth Street, the people that are trying to do something for all of us, and not men and women that belong to our white middle class club! And that's what you all belong to! Revolution now! Gay power! Know the gay power!
"We do not have the responsibility of making gay life look good to straights so that they will accept us. I am not at all interested in promoting a cleaned up image to a straight world which is twice as corrupt and ten times as sick."
