Shoko was starting to get tired of these two boys.
The cursed energy of the land was so thick that even the solid stone steps up the mountain felt like walking through a bog, every step sinking into something soft and bottomless. Gojo was unaffected —nothing ever seemed to bother that one— but she could see the way it was starting to weigh down Geto. As another fight concludes, the boys once again cleaning up without needing her input, Geto had gotten slower, made more mistakes, taken a blow that he could have just not risked.
"Geto, slow down—" Shoko moved to grab him by the elbow, to pull him back before he launched himself into yet another fight (as Gojo already seemed to have done) but as her fingers closed around his arm, her irritation turned to alarm. She could feel his cursed energy beneath her fingers keenly, writhing with the same putrid aura as the land they've been submerged in all day, wisps of taint smothering the human presence beneath.
Her eyes narrowed, her tone turning accusatory. "You must feel like hell. Why didn't you say anything?"

“Cap–ah, Raven.” As with every such slip-up he’d berate himself for not following through with the other’s wishes as well as he ought; it was difficult, perhaps, for one who’d idolized the Captain for so long, looked up to him as role model and now must rectify the legend with the man. It was still jarring, really, the way Raven held himself, acted, a stark contrast to what he knew–but he hadn’t known much, had he, nor was he swayed to believe that he was much wrong about the honorable core he’d believed Schwann to have. Thus, it was in attempt to display the proper respect that he found his tongue slipping. “Are you out on a walk? Might I accompany you?”
Raven let the slip slide as if nothing had happened-- such pretending was second nature to the old bird after all. He could only be grateful for all that allowed him to wipe away the sins of another name and start anew.
“How could I possibly say no to the Commandant himself?” Hands crossed behind his head in a casual stretch, as he resumed his casual pace down the quiet streets of Zaphias. “Though I’m warning ya, I’m lookin’ for a good drinking hole. Don’t suppose you have any recommendations?”
*gets down on one knee* will you…….. *takes out ring* ……….fight me?

she didn ‘ t want this .
on some level , she knew why he was angry . as partners , they did everything together . since childhood , even ! but he had to realise ; she wasn ‘ t doing this because she doubted his abilities , she never had any doubt for him whatsoever . she was doubting herself . and in some sort of revelation , as he struck her and she let him , she knew she wouldn ‘ t win against all for one .
she didn ‘ t want to bring torino down with her .
nana hit the ground roughly , not only landing on her ass but fully toppling over . she propped herself up onto her elbows , red eyes glossy with tears that shot a glare right at him .
‘ stop . ‘
If you don’t think you can do it then trust in your friends! Damn it, why was that so hard to understand? Why had everything changed so much between them? And as he knelt above her, fists clenched on the wadded cape by her shoulders he dipped his head. In anger, in shame, in confusion.
He didn’t react when she asked for him to stop, only stayed where he was, breath heavy and loud in the cold night air. Maybe Nana would feel the warm drop of a tear hit the front of her costume.
“I can’t. I won’t. I will never give up on you.”
"So you're telling me you've managed to get by just spinning around wildly like that?" One look at what he called 'Around' had her baffled that he could keep his footing at all. "Want to see how it's really done?" Her voice was somewhere between teasing and a genuine challenge- stars knew she didn't get to teach anyone anything lately.
“I guess I did, somehow.” Raven was comfortable with his style, one he’s had to develop alone, for a weapon traditionally used by a group supporting one another. It was unorthodox, but he was skilled, and it threw his opponents off as much as Casey must have felt watching his display.
But he didn’t argue, more than happy to allow her to have her moment.
“You’re the boss, show this silly ol’ bird some new tricks then eh?”

she saw him shake , how it was anger and upset , how she hated seeing him like this . if she had known any of this were to happen , if she had known she would be chosen to wield this quirk , to determine the fates of who knows how many ( it was an incredible weight to bear on someone ‘ s shoulders , and she was no atlas ) she would have never accepted .
nana gasped at the stinging contact , head jerking back more in surprise than anything else . a single step was taken back as she raised a gloved hand to her cheek , fingers gently touching the spot . he had … ah .
his words cut deep . she let her bangs fall over her eyes to cover the tears that were welling up . she bit her bottom lip , hand dropping to her chest as she silently watched her fist shake . she wished she hadn ‘ t said anything — but then , which would ‘ ve hurt more ?
she went low , before popping up closer in front of him to bring an elbow to his chin . at best , it would rattle his brain , stun him and hopefully knock some sense into him . her blood had run cold at the tears , but she didn ‘ t stop on her counterattack . it was a knee jerk reaction ; be fought and fight back .
she had no words right now . only a heart full of fear and shame .
Torino lost his grip on her costume as he reeled back from the hit, Jetting with the momentum before finding his footing again, his vision blurred for a second by the pain in his jaw.
He wasn’t surprised at the counterattack really. He knew her too well. Some things just couldn’t be done with words. Sometimes, you just gotta knock your feelings right into the other’s dumb cranium.
He’ll show her weak.
“Tell me how you really feel, huh?” And he dove right back in, faster than the eye could follow, intending to knock her back right on her ass. He’s always been the faster of the two until the day she’d received that damn quirk that’s caused all this grief. She’d never lorded it over him until now, she’d never tried to use it as an excuse to drive them apart.

hands had been balled into fists to prevent any sign of how much she ‘ d been shaking . it wasn ‘ t because of him , or fried nerves or anything of the sort . she was genuinely upset . at herself , for having to do this , for having to forcefully cut her ties and only hope torino ( she knew he would regardless of how this ended ) would keep training toshinori .
she actually winced when his tight grip turned from firm to painful , and reached up to grab his wrist to pry him off her shoulder . that would definitely bruise , but she would never hold it against him . she knew how hurtful this was — and it killed her .
‘ you ‘ re not listening — all for one , hes bigger than us , torino . you don ‘ t have one for all , you can ‘ t fight him like i can . he could look at you and you would die —- you ‘ re too weak against him . i ‘ m not . ‘
there was a pause as she mentally slapped herself for wording it so harshly , but it was the truth . nana wasn ‘ t sure what she would do if something had happened to torino if they went up against Him together . barely able to contain herself , she raised her fist up to press it against torino ‘ s chest .
‘ i ‘ m doing this to protect you , and to protect chiyo and toshinori , and everyone. it ‘ s a necessary evil , torino . i have to do this alone . ‘
He let her pry his hand off, he stood quietly, shaking as she spoke her words-- he wanted to hear it, he wanted to hear her say why but he wasn’t hearing it. not really. All he could understand was that she-- what? Saw that just because she had that given quirk, she was the only one that had to do this? As if this wasn’t all of their problems?
And then, and then--
Torino slapped aside her offered fist and hit her across the face-- it was a quick punch, without much windup and angled to hurt more than damage, and then he was at her throat, gloved hands tightening over Nana’s collar.
“I’ll show you weak! Protect us? Don’t pull that kind of bullshit when you’re acting like you’ve given up!” There was angry tears in his eyes-- they’ve always faced everything together. Every danger, every challenge, and she’s always trusted him to watch her back before. “I’m a Hero too, damn it! I’m not afraid!”

she absolutely despised having to do this . giving the cold shoulder , distancing herself because she knew about the inevitable — it hurt her heart . she didn ‘ t want to do it alone , face him alone …. but she refused having to see her friends and more family die because of it .
nana ‘ s smile was nonexistent right now . her expression was grim , brows knit together tightly as she frowned toward the cityscape below them . her gaze was turned toward torino when he spoke , when he declared what she knew already . she only wished he would understand …
‘ torino …. please , i don ‘ t want to have this conversation right now . ‘ nana refused to admit it , to say she was scared , terrified even , of what was to come . but she had to . for them . for everyone. ‘ we are partners , but … you just … you would hold me back . ‘
Torino struggled to keep his grip on her shoulder steady, to look her straight in the eyes. It hurt. It lacked the usual spark, the laughter and joy that made her shine brighter than anyone he had ever met in the world. It’d made Nana a Hero more than any quirk or silly qualifications ever did. And right now…right now it was clouded with fear and insecurity…
His grip tightened painfully at her words and his eyes flared. This. This was what had been pissing him off for so long, this was what was so infuriating about her avoidance. How could she think that, after all these years together? Since they’d been mere students they’d come together because together they’d been strong. Together, they’d made inconsequential quirks into something amazing.
“Really? You think that little of me?” It wasn’t fair of him at this moment, but she wasn’t being fair either, throwing years of friendship and partnership in his face. This was all so much bullshit. “We’re having this conversion, right now. I’m sick of waiting. Tell me then. Why are you so eager to cut me out?”

Nana had to understand how not-subtle she was being, right? It had been eating away at Torino for weeks. The upcoming confrontation loomed over both their heads-- they can’t avoid it any longer. Yet she continued to act like he wouldn’t even be a part of it. She couldn’t possibly expect him to just stand aside quietly.
“You’re not leaving me behind.” He was aggravated. He wasn’t naive enough to dismiss being prepared for what-ifs and setting up contingencies, but Nana was acting like she was already standing before the noose.
Torino’s hand was on her shoulder, his firm grip, refusing to let her just walk away from him. She’d been trying to-- he could tell. Putting up walls, throwing out distance. Frankly it was insulting. “We’re partners.”

what felt like an eternity had only been a couple of moments . as quickly as they had come , her tears had dulled and gone altogether . torino was likely the only human being who would ever see her like this ; a mess . she would appreciate it unendingly , and she hoped he knew this .
taking in a deep breath , nana pulled away and settled into a sitting position on her knees that was more comfortable . her hands remained on his shoulders , however , as she smiled at him . it was full of warmth and admiration despite her tear - stained cheeks .
‘ don ‘ t call me dearie ever again . that makes you sound even older . ‘ she stifled her own laugh for a moment , though it managed to slip through just a little bit .
‘ let ‘ s have some tea , yeah ? i need something to warm me up . ‘
He’d stay as long as was needed, but Nana only gave herself a few brief moments before collecting herself once more. She always did push too hard, but he said nothing. No use calling the kettle black-- they wouldn’t be who they were if they hadn’t always been like this.
As she leaned back he stayed where he was, a solid rock of support for her to balance upon as he smiled back at her-- a real smile, slight, gentle, and nothing like the foolish grin he had masked on not too long prior.
“Pah, it’s you that need to get with the times!” Torino’s smile twitched at the corner of his lips before he roughly pulled back, turning ahead to stomp his way towards a kettle. “I wasn’t expecting guests so you just gotta deal with crappy tea. Throw that over the TV for me, will ya?”
He pointed at the tarp on the ground, and the TV made its location known by the sound of a soap opera in the middle of a dramatic argument, a puddle of water dribbling down half of it from the leaking roof.
