Mikoto/Lije

My name is Mikoto. I was named after a precious friend of my father. I grew up on Dino Earth, but I love Another Earth. I can't wait to explore it. It seems like it will be much more exciting! The little girl very politely knocked on the door to the big white house by the ocean with one hand. In the other hand was a bag of take out from Dino House as a gift for visiting when uninvited. Yatsudenwani said that this was where Mikoto lived, unless he wasn't home? "Miko-sama? It's me, Mikoto!"

The girl’s voice echoed through the house and finally reached the man in question who was currently in the livingroom. Upon hearing the familiar voice, Mikoto got up from the couch and went to the front-door.

"Hello Mikoto-chan." He greeted the young girl with a smile, though couldn’t quite hide the surprise in his voice when he saw her. He glanced behind Mikoto-chan for a moment to see if she was alone before he focused back on the girl. "What are you doing here?" Mikoto asked as he stepped to the side to let the other pass and come inside.

"Huh?" Mikoto blinked at the girl’s question, being dragged out of his thoughts again. "Yeah yeah, you can. I have enough room, that won’t be a problem." He answered absent-minded, waving off the younger as he was already back to thinking. He would need to find a good school for Mikoto-chan. She would probably have to go to his old one here until they could get her into one in the city, somewhere where she could feel challenged. They would also need to go shopping at some point, she couldn’t really run around in the same dress the whole time. She would also need stuff for her room as the one he had in mind for her was only equipped with a bed and a closet. That sounded like a lot of work, Mikoto thought to himself and sighed inwardly, leaning his head on his left hand. That reminded him. "Say, does that mean you bring Stego with you when you get your stuff from Dino Earth?" Mikoto didn’t want to sound too hopeful, but that was still part of the deal, right? Mikoto-chan would live with him and he could get his second partner back. Heh, KillerOh could shine in old glory again.

Yes! Okay, it hadn't been in the way that she'd thought it would go, but she'd managed to get what she wanted in the end. She was going to live with Miko-sama! She leaned back and puffed out her chest a bit, a mock immitation of being insulted. "Of course I will. I said that was the deal, didn't I?" She crossed her arms and smiled a little bit more at Miko-sama, pleased as punch that everyone was going to get what they wanted out of this. Who knows, maybe Miko-sama might be able to cure her. "Should I go get my things now?"

"Hello Mikoto-chan." He greeted the young girl with a smile, though couldn’t quite hide the surprise in his voice when he saw her. He glanced behind Mikoto-chan for a moment to see if she was alone before he focused back on the girl. "What are you doing here?" Mikoto asked as he stepped to the side to let the other pass and come inside.

Mikoto raised an eyebrow at the murmured words. “Hey now, how about you have a little faith in my skills? I may not be the nicest person to be around, but I’m a brilliant surgeon. People even gave me awards for my work.” He smirked, sounding actually proud of himself even though he was talking about a job he actually couldn’t really stand. Most times, it was such a boring waste of time, not even the pay could change his mind on that matter. “I would have to monitor you, see how you’re doing… make some tests at some point…” Mikoto was thinking out loud since it was already decided that the girl would live with him, and he wasn’t even talking about surgery yet. Mikoto-chan’s condition intrigued him and now that he had taken an interest in it, he wanted to see if he could find a satisfying solution.

"Top could follow you from the air. I doubt that it would be much of a problem." The man shrugged lightly, clearly not bothered if anyone would get scared to see a living pterodactyl following a girl around town. "As for getting in contact with me… A cell phone would probably be the best solution for now." Well there was a better solution for the telecommunication issue, but there was no way he would let Yatsudenwani back into his house so he could accompany the other.

Mikoto really wanted to be annoyed that she was going to be followed around by Top Galer all the time and was pretty sure the pterosaur would get tired of watching a slow human walking around on the streets. She wanted to be annoyed, but she knew why Miko-sama needed her to be watched. If she had an attack all of a sudden, and she was by herself, that probably wouldn't end well.

She finally smiled at Miko-sama, glad that he was finally yielding to her living here. It wasn't the method she had thought would work and kept that stored in the back of her mind for later use. "So, I really can live with you?"

Listening to Mikoto-chan was like looking into a mirrow, only that he didn’t like what he saw. It was true that he wouldn’t try to make her normal because normal was overrated. He could admit that he sometimes toyed with the thought of how different his life would be if he was what other people deemed normal, but then he remembered that he had tried to live that kind of life for a big part of his life and it had nearly bored him to death. The other thing Mikoto didn’t like was how the girl talked about the way her parents treated her. It made him ask himself if that kind of treatment was any different than what his own parents had done, neglected him until they had driven him out of his own home when he had been still a child.

Mikoto, too, set his utensils down to focus completely on Mikoto-chan. Her heart couldn’t be fixed? Now that made him think. Was that really the last word the girl’s doctors had decided to make? How good was the medical system on Dino Earth anyway? Once Mikoto-chan finished speaking, he sighed slightly, eyeing the girl for a long moment before he spoke up. “Y’know, this kind of manipulation doesn’t work on me. It’s sad to hear and I think I understand how you must feel, but I want to make a few things clear.” Mikoto leaned on the table and looked the girl straight in the eyes. “One: I’m not good with children. Two: I get moody and sometimes won’t have time for you because I have to work or there’s something else I need to do. But… something you said made me think. Your heart condition. I would like to have a look at that myself. I don’t trust other people’s work, especially when it comes to medical issues. So, I’m going to make you an offer and I want you to hear me out and then think again if you really want to live here.” He glanced down at his food for a second, no longer feeling hungry due to the turn their little conversation had taken. “I let you live here if you let me have a look at your heart. Let me see if there is really nothing that can be done to help you. I can’t promise that I will find something that will help, but at least let me try. So, if you decide to say yes, you would have to go to school here. And you don’t need to worry, there are plenty of schools where a bright little girl like you won’t get bored too fast. The next condition would be that you let me know if you decide to wander off. And I don’t want to hear any excuses, like you don’t want to disturb me during work. Either I will drive you around or you will take Top.” He would have to talk about that with his partner, Mikoto thought to himself as he made a mental note to apologize to the pterosaur that he had made that kind of decision on his own without asking first. He would probably have to think of more rules, but he could still do that later.

She hadn't come to him for his people skills and she certainly understood if Miko-sama had a bad day to avoid him. He was pretty strong and she wasn't, exactly. What made her hesitate was that Miko-sama wanted to look at her heart himself. That was what interested him the most? He really was like no normal adults.

She looked down at her chest, where her heart beat under her dress and skin, waiting for any moment to make her collapse. Annoying thing. "... I guess the worst that could happen would just be dying from it" she murmured, thinking out loud as she mulled it over. The details were a bit fuzzy on how exactly Mikoto could look at her heart, but she imagined it would have something to do with being cut open. Pain was easy to handle though, since she healed so quickly anyway. Going to school here would be much more interesting, surely, so there was that. If only there weren't students around too. She looked up again, a small sparkle in her eye. It was decided. She would live here. "How do I let you know if I'm going somewhere? Would Top Galer tell you or would I get one of those flippy thingies that people stick to their ear?"

It was a good thing that Mikoto had stopped eating because only hearing what the girl wanted from him in exchange for seeing Stego again, made him nearly faint in disbelieve. He was sure he probably would’ve died had he decided to continue eating. It seemed always the same, people chose the exact moment when he was eating to present some clever idea or asked him certain things, making him choke and cough and sometimes uncomfortable. Now though, he only stared at Mikoto-cha was a doctor and could take care of her, should her condition get worse.

Little Mikoto sat back, picking her words carefully. This wasn’t going to be easy to explain, was it? She should probably just be honest with him by now, though she was scared he’d turn her away and send her home. “… Because you wouldn’t try to make me normal” she started, trying to express how she felt. “Mama and Papa care, but they want me to be normal, like everyone else. I can’t talk to the other kids my age. They don’t like the things I like and are too slow to keep up. I don’t like any of them, but adults don’t take me seriously because I’m younger than them. I should make friends, but I don’t care and Mama won’t…” She paused, hesitating just how much she could actually tell him. “I’m… not allowed to talk about my power, to anyone. I think because of my heart they treat me like I could break at any moment and want to protect me, but I don’t feel like I can do anything and she gets so mad when I don’t listen…” She looked down at her food instead of at him. That pity she always got, she hated more than anything. She’d rather be bullied for her smarts instead of being forced into some box she was supposed to fit into.

"Ryouga-san… would just try to make me go home. Even Burachio sides with Papa about coming to Another Earth on my own. That it’s not allowed, dangerous… But, if my heart can’t be fixed, then what point is there in being careful? They lie to me, saying it’s okay, but I know. They don’t know what’s wrong with me…" She didn’t try to hide that she sounded at the end of her rope. She was. Her parents loved her, but she felt suffocated. Bribed to do as they pleased, coddled whenever something slightly dangerous rears its head, expected to play nice with others she didn’t care for. Though, as she spoke, she came to realize that maybe Miko-sama was just like them. Wanting ‘only what’s best for her’… And put down her utensils, defeated. "It’s no use, huh? I thought… you’d be different."

Mikoto raised an eyebrow at the girl’s quick response. Was Stego really that lonely that he had asked Mikoto-chan to bring him here? Well, Top was here, too. And for all he knew those two had grown quite close while being partner. “Hm, and given the fact that you’re the only person who’s able to go back and forth between Dino Earth and here, you would be nice enough to fulfill Stego’s and my wish to see each other again, right?” Mikoto watched the younger for a long moment while leaning his head on his hand. “Something tells me there’s a catch.” He began to smirk slightly, finally having seen through the little charade. Or so the doctor thought… “What is it you want in exchange, Mikoto-chan? Maybe come for a visit and spend some time with me in the future?” That wouldn’t be a problem, he had done that before. Well, not that the girl could remember that. Though, it hadn’t killed him back then, even if it had been a little weird at first, he could admit that much, but after a while it hadn’t been too bad.

Mikoto looked her Miko-sama dead in the eye, leveling with him one on one, with no ages or discrepancies between them. She looked at him as an equal and said as most straight faced as possible and said "I want to live here with you." She continued while she still had him in a state of shock before he could say absolutely not. "No questions. No trying to convince me to leave by tricking me. I'm good at cleaning and can take care of myself, no matter what Mama and Papa say. Another Earth is way more interesting that Dino Earth and I'd be safer if I had some place to come back to rather than wander around the streets of Tokyo by myself." She had pulled at all the usual cards and put them in play. Miko-sama cared about her and wanted her to be safe, she knew that by how he had acted when they had met up before at his hospital. She also knew that Miko-sama had tried to treat her like every other little kid, so tricking her like them wouldn't work on her and decided to put a stop to it before he tried it. She was smart and she knew it... That made her dangerous.

Well, that was good to know. Mikoto nodded lightly a few times and was about to go back to his food when he Mikoto-chan brought up Stegoslidon. “Stego?” The doctor asked, sounding surprised again, though this time it was for a different reason. He hadn’t really thought Stego would want to see him after what had happened between them even if he had seemed quite concerned for him. Still… Seeing Stego again would probably be the hardest, even more than his teammates. “I… want to see him again.” Mikoto’s words were oddly hesitant, almost afraid as if he was considering to end their conversation there and then. “I’m just not sure if he wants that, too…”

"He does." Lije's answer was immediate, wanting to continue the conversation before Mikoto could stop her and turn her away. "He... doesn't talk about it very often, but he does want to see you again. He even asked me if I could bring him here..." Though that might be a little harder for her to do than a person, but she could do it. But she wasn't a method of transport and she wanted an exchange.

Mikoto’s head snapped up to stare at the girl in a mixture of surprise and shock. “Please tell me you don’t mean Yatsudenwani.” There was a certain pleading tone in the man’s voice. Even if he could use the Evolian to keep the house clean. But the mere thought of that thing drooling on his food… No, it had been such a nice day up until now. He had even managed to suppress every thought of that telephone-crocodile being anywhere near his food.

"What? No. He's capable of coming to you himself" the little girl said firmly. If Yatsudenwani really wanted to see Mikoto, he would do so on his own time and have nothing to do with her powers. "But Stegoslidon can't come see you on his own. He's stuck on Dino Earth with everyone else." Maybe now she would get a better reaction out of him, and some honesty. "That is, if you want to see him too."

Mikoto had gone back to eating, savoring every bite, while the girl seemed to think about her answer. Ah, he had missed the taste of that curry. The original was still the best in his opinion. "Hm?" He stopped mid-chew, blinking a bit surprised at Mikoto-chan’s question. Tilting his head as he continued to eat, Mikoto pondered the question for a few moments. He had his means to get away from his loneliness and boredom should it get too much, either with the key safely tugged away in the small leather pouch hidden under his shirt or with Top. But he guessed that was not what the other wanted to hear. "I got used to it." He answered and gave a small shrug with his right shoulder, doing his best to sound as casual as possible about it. The motion was meant to downplay the real extent of his feelings, but it seemed a little forced, something even the doctor noticed just a little too late, but chose to ignore it as he went back to eating, avoiding to look up to meet the girl’s eyes.

That was definitely forced. He was lying. Even if he said he was okay with it, he probably wasn't. Poor Miko-sama! No, that was no good. She had to keep focused, even if she wanted to comfort him right now. She leaned a little bit over the counter towards him. "Um, well, I know someone who might be able to help with that. After all, he's lonely too."

Mikoto glanced up again. Close? He and that thing? He didn’t think they were close or anything near what one would consider friends. Yatsudenwani was… fun to have have around, he guessed. Not that he would ever admit that thought out loud. “I don’t know… he was useful, I guess.” Mikoto shrugged. He wasn’t quite certain what their relationship was supposed to be. And if he was honest, he didn’t want to think too much about it. He had his own way of showing that he liked that thing, even if other people could only shake their head about the method.

Mikoto was about to go back to eating when he heard the girl’s question about him living alone. “I… live alone here, yes.” He glanced down at his left hand before looking back to Mikoto-chan, not wanting to bring up the fact that he actually had a second home. “Why do you ask?”

She looked down at her food and inspected a piece of it, avoiding eye contact with Miko-sama. She needed to be careful about her approach to this, if she was going to get him to agree. He wasn't an idiot, after all. "Don't you ever get lonely, living alone out here?" This was the first part of her plan. First, she would gauge how Miko-sama reacted. If he really was lonely, even with Top Galer, she would offer her agreement with Stego, but she would have her condition... And there would be the rub.

Mikoto’s hands froze over the food when he heard the girl mention the telephone-crocodile that used to be his maid… or butler or whatever. “That…” His head snapped up to stare at Mikoto-chan in surprise. That thing was still alive? “I doubt he misses me given our history.” Mikoto dismissed the thought of the Evolian liking him with a quick wave of his hand before pulling the offered food towards him. “He probably only wants to make sure I stay as far away from him as possible by being nice.”

Mikoto smiled at Miko-sama again. "Really? I've heard a little bit about it and you two seemed to be close at the end." She wouldn't push it that Yatsudenwani had actually started to cry when he found out Mikoto was alive. Instead, she looked around the house instead as she idly poked at her food. "Do you live by yourself, Miko-sama?"

Mikoto’s eyes went wide when he saw the take-out and from what place it was. The Dino House. That meant he could have that delicious curry again. “Of course you can come in.” He smiled and gave the girl a light pat on the shoulder. Once the younger was inside, Mikoto led the way back to the livingroom and the kitchen area on the other side of the large room.

Happily, Mikoto went inside and admired Miko-sama's house. It was very clean and white... They had a lot in common then, if that was Miko-sama's favorite color! She trotted around the kitchen counter to the other side and placed the bag on it, so she could pull them out. Two containers were enough for both of them. At the time, Yatsudenwani had given these to her as a gift for Miko-sama, which was very nice of him to do despite being an Evolian. "Yatsudenwani-san says 'Hello'. I think he misses you" she said with a smile as she pushed Miko-sama's meal towards him with chopsticks on top for him to use.

"I came to visit you, of course" Mikoto said like it was the most obvious answer in the world, cleverly hiding the true reason why she was here. She glanced behind Miko-sama just as he did to her, to see if he was with anyone. He seemed to be alone, though, so she looked back at him and held up the take-out from Dino House for him to see. Mikoto leaned back into Miko-sama as the large dinosaur lifted them into the sky, but as soon as the innitial take off had happened, she was already trying to lean to one side and the other to see the ground pull away. “Uwaaah~! Top, you’re so cool! Look, look, we’re already up so high!” she squeed over the rushing winds, not fearing the height at all. The only thing she fought to control was her hair, which she held onto with one hand around her shoulder and down at her chest to keep it out of her eyes, which were already sparkling with excitement.

Mikoto couldn´t help the chuckle when he saw how happy the girl was, doing his best to keep the younger secure so she wouldn´t fall off the pterosaur’s back as she leaned to the sides. Top said nothing as he took the two humans towards the harbour where he flew a few circles over the Rainbow Bridge and various ships before he headed a bit farther out to the sea. Leaving the city behind, the pterosaur turned to the right and flew over the sea along the coastline. “And, how is it? Better than a river?” The doctor leaned a bit closer so the other would hear him over the roaring winds.

"It's huge" she said back, not taking her eyes off the scenery around her, trying to take it all in. "Everything looks so tiny from up here. I feel so much larger than I really am." What a great feeling to have, too. Suddenly, she didn't feel as pointless with everything below being so much smaller than her. She wished it was always like that.

'Mai-chan', huh? So, Mikoto wouldn't meet her any time soon, then. That sort of disappointed her. She had kinda hoped she would have a friend somewhat close to her age that didn't think she was a freak. Still, she smiled anyway. “If that's not too much trouble, Ryouga-san. I don't want to be a bother.”

"A bother? No, of course not! She’ll be so happy to hear that you visited the Earth!" The male tried to make sure the little girl didn’t felt uncomfortable. She was part of the team, of this big family and she was never a bother and will never be. "And when she comes for the holidays, both of you can do many things! Like parties, play together and others. If you are here in the same time, of course. It will be good for both of you since you don’t have that much age difference."

Holidays? Mikoto’s lip came out in a pout as she thought about that. “Hmmm? You really think so? Do you think Papa and Mama would let me?”

"I don’t think they will mind you two playing together. But, when it comes to holidays, I need to join too. You might be really good girls, but there should be an adult with you, right?" He patted her head gently, trying not to sound that strict. But he was right. The world still has its dangerous places.

Mikoto stared up at Ryouga as he kept talking. Hm, what was it about that sentence that didn't sit well with her? "Ryouga-san, do you think I'm weak? Is that why adults need to be around?" she asked. It wasn't an accusation, and she wasn't upset. She was just curious.

1. A fluffy stuffed animal.

"Mikoto-chan! Look what I bought for you." Seeing the girl sitting on one of those similar to bar stools, he placed the little stuffed bunny on the table. Ryouga sure was happy, but wasn’t sure if it was her favourite animal, so the question didn’t wait. "Since I know white is your colour, I couldn’t think of other plushie. Hope you like it!"

"Uwah…" Mikoto picked up the fluffy bunny and looked it over, her eyes filled with wonder. "It’s so cute~" Looking back up at Ryouga, she smiled at him, happy as could be. "I love bunnies! Especially white ones! Thank you so much, Ryouga-san!"

"Really? They are really cute animals. I knew that you will like this little one here.~" The older one patted her head lightly, grinning. "And no need to thank me. I like to make little gifts for my good friends."

Mikoto’s eyes got a little wider as she looked over the stuffed bunny in her arms. “You… made this?”

"Ah, no no. I just thought you will like it. I am not good in making plushies, sadly." Ryouga left short giggle, nodding to himself. "Iif I was, I would make so many for you and Mai-chan!"

Mikoto giggled and held the plush bunny up by its paws to wiggle them at him. "Ryouga-san, I could teach you how to sew. Mama showed me how and I'm really good at it."

Rika skipped down the street, a big smile on her face as she wandered around her neighborhood. Her mother had said she could play outside, and while Rika knew she had meant just outside the house, she wanted to explore. After all, if she wasn’t brave enough, she wouldn’t get to be a Kyoryuger like Mommy and Uncle Nobu when she grew up. She was about to turn back around when she saw a flash of white out of the corner of her eye. Curious, she ran to the corner and stuck her head around, hoping to see what it had been. Her eyes fell on a girl a little older than her, in all white, that she had never seen before. She debated for a moment. Mommy had always told her not to talk to strangers, but she was pretty sure she meant grown-up strangers, and besides, she was always supposed to help people, and maybe this girl was lost! So Rika ran around the corner, calling out, “Hi! Are you new here? I’m Rika!”

Mikoto had managed to find herself in another part of Another Earth, exploring today while she had the time. Mama had said she could go out to play, so this was okay, right? Though she wasn’t even really sure where to start. Maybe, this way? She turned a corner and spotted a beautiful flower garden someone had put together to the side. But just as she was about to goinvestigate further, a voice picked up near her and she turned. A girl just a little younger than her trotted up to her. She smiled back and nodded. “I’ve never been here before. I’m Mikoto.”

Rika stuck out her hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Mikoto!” A grin grew on her face, and she added, “Are you a miko or no?” She looked at the other girl expectantly. She knew her joke wasn’t as good as Uncle Nobu’s, but maybe she might be as good as him some day if she kept trying.

She took Rika’s hand and nodded. “Nice to meet you too, Rika.” Mikoto tilted her head to the side, not quite understanding the joke. She wasn’t from Japan, after all. “A… miko? What’s a miko?” she asked, not sure if she was supposed to know what that was.

Rika’s smile dropped for a moment as Mikoto didn’t react to the joke. Then she brightened again at her question, realizing that it wasn’t a failing on her joke’s part, but that she had told it to the wrong audience. “Oh, a miko is a priestess! Like at the Shinto shrines!” Then she blinked, and tilted her head to the side as well. “Are you not from Japan?”

A miko was a priestess? Ah, they had those! Sort of. She smiled gently and shook her head, almost feeling a little ashamed that she wasn’t. “No, I’m not. I’m just visiting… I wanted to explore today, while I had the time.”

Rika clapped her hands excitedly. “Maybe I can show you around! The city’s a bit of a mess since Mama and Uncle Nobu and the others had their big final battle with Deboss, but it’s still a pretty cool place! Oooh! I can show you all the places Uncle Nobu and the others fought the Debo Monsters and stuff like that!”

"Debo Monsters?" Mikoto asked, smiling at the younger girl's excitement. "Are they anything like Trinoids?" That was something Mikoto knew about from stories her parents had told her. She liked that they were defeated too.
