haruki & sakura as kids and just like. some other kid messed up sakura's shoes so haruki decides to do the perfectly logical thing to get revenge on them-

he steals the kid's shoes and shoves them full of rabbit shit from the rabbits they keep at the school and then puts them right back in his shoe locker. great job. A+ big brother maneuver no notes.

haruki picks up smoking from a fellow runaway that's older than him. his dinged up lighter is a gift from them- probably the only gift he's ever gotten in his life. he was an asshole, but he taught haruki what he needed to know to live life on the streets.

(he's never once considered going back to the orphanage.)

he learns how to steal cigarettes from convenience stores. there's something calming about smoking. he's not stupid. he knows it's bad for him- but he does it anyways. he's never once entertained the thought of quitting. what's the point anyways?

(no one in noroshi ever really got on his case for it- except takiishi, but that was just because he hated the smell of smoke. haruka's friends, on the other hand? they won't get off his case about it. ugh. annoying.)

If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.

1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.

2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.

3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.

4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.

5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.

Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.

the fact that sakura can interact with physical objects is very funny to me, especially before the rest of class 1-1 are In The Know. anzai enters the classroom to see an object floating in midair. it abruptly drops to the ground with a clatter when sakura realizes he's not alone. anzai just sweats because hey. hey what the fuck.

anzai: do you guys get the feeling our classroom is haunted?

takanashi: i still think you're seeing things, man.

(and then it turns out. yes. their classroom is haunted.)

sakura looking at nirei's hair, nodding to himself like. he's blonde so he must be half-foreign. I'm not completely oblivious. i've heard about the westerners. i've heard about their blonde hair.

sakura, upon seeing kiryu's pink hair for the first time just. wh-what. nirei what is that. do foreigners have pink hair? and nirei just looks at him perplexed like i don't think kiryu-san is a foreigner sakura-san.

sakura: huh? but his hair's pink!

nirei: he just dyed it, that's all.

sakura: ...dye?

(or: how nirei finds out sakura's been under the assumption that he was of mixed blood this entire time.)

Does Haruki rock the t-shirt + boxers combo at home like his lil bro, or does he just forgo the shirt entirely because who even needs pajamas anyway? Unnecessary expense.

I'm not entirely convinced he doesn't just sleep in his day clothes. I can't imagine he'd spend money on separate sleepwear.

you have no idea how many times when I'm writing a fic or even a post and kiryu is involved I have to fight the urge to type a second u. why isn't there a second u.

He jolted awake at the sound of a commotion. Sitting straight up, he hurriedly glanced around. The rooftop was still empty of anyone but himself- the noise was coming from down below. Creeping his way to the edge of the roof, he curiously peered over it- just in time to watch someone slam a person's face into the ground. Oh! Togame! He nearly opened his mouth to call out to him- before realizing he wasn't alone. There were a few other people wearing orange Shishitoren jackets with him- including the one he'd probably stolen his hoodie from. Sakura pulled it a little closer to his body as he ducked his head to make himself a little less visible. He wasn't scared! He could probably take him! "Already over? That's my Kame-chan!" …he definitely couldn't take that one, though. Sakura peered down at the sandy haired kid from the safety of his hiding spot. He'd been watching Shishitoren for awhile now, so he knew that one was the boss. He was small, but he was strong. If they fought, he'd definitely lose. Just like he'd lost to- He grit his teeth, his nails digging into the palm of his hands. They were just bigger, that's all. That was the only reason. It wasn't fair. They had a place to go back to at the end of the day- why did they have to take away the closest thing he'd had to reliable shelter in a long time? Why couldn't he do anything about it? (It was so frustrating. He had to get stronger.)
