People, especially games, get eldritch madness wrong a lot and it’s really such a shame.

An ant doesn’t start babbling when they see a circuit board. They find it strange, to them it is a landscape of strange angles and humming monoliths. They may be scared, but that is not madness.

Madness comes when the ant, for a moment, can see as a human does.

It understands those markings are words, symbols with meaning, like a pheromone but infinitely more complex. It can travel unimaginable distances, to lands unlike anything it has seen before. It knows of mirth, embarrassment, love, concepts unimaginable before this moment, and then…

It’s an ant again.

Echoes of things it cannot comprehend swirl around its mind. It cannot make use of this knowledge, but it still remembers. How is it supposed to return to its life? The more the ant saw the harder it is for it to forget. It needs to see it again, understand again. It will do anything to show others, to show itself, nothing else in this tiny world matters.

This is madness.

forms of eldritch horror include but are not limited to - nobody will ever believe you, you must live alone with this knowledge - you will never feel safe again, and you realize you were never safe before - everything that was familiar is now strange and abhorrent to the point anything that now seems normal should be held in utmost suspicion - having this new knowledge has opened doors that will continually reveal new equally cursed knowledge without end - death and madness are no longer escapes

I’ve always felt that the idea of madness or sanity in an eldritch horror sense were misnomers. If anything, I feel a better term is a change of perspective. There is nothing inherent in seeing a greater being that “drives you insane”, it’s that this being doesn’t fit into your previous worldview at all and you have to wrestle that. Every character can and should react differently, changing in ways that “make sense” for them. It’s either a change in worldview or attempting to fit the greater being into your preexisting one. Both will have negative results, but will be interesting as hell to explore.

One-shot tabletop RPG where you play as a bunch of medieval English peasants trying to trick the royal tax-collectors into believing that your village has no taxable assets. It plays out exactly like a new-school heist caper RPG, except in reverse, with the players devising and carrying out the scheme which they must then prevent the NPC "party" from uncovering. Do you fake a plague? Pretend to be mad? Construct a second, much shittier village and try to keep the tax collectors so distracted they never think to ask what's behind that hill?

this actually gets so much funnier if they're doing this on a manor by manor basis. lots of villages were actually split btwn multiple manors, so you could just have a bunch of villagers running across the borders with barrels of eels and their good horses/cows in a benny hill-esque sprint to avoid the tax collectors

bonus points if the manor's reeve (also usually a peasant) and the lord are also in on it because what self-respecting medieval person didn't love tax evasion?

As an unrelated tangent, though realistically taxation during the medieval period was mostly based on land and livestock, I think for game purposes is might be fun to introduce some of the goofier taxation schemes of the early modern period – for example, the infamous window tax – on a scenario-by-scenario basis in order to shake things up. Maybe have a big lookup table of increasingly absurd taxation schemes, and randomly select one or more at the start of each session to be imposed in addition to the basic land-and-livestock stuff just to see how players will contrive to get around them.

(Heck, maybe even have an element of potential misinformation whereby one of the randomly selected bonus taxes may not actually exist, but the players don't know which one – watch them waste half the session trying to weasel out of paying a nonexistent tax on pants.)

It sounds like fun, with the caveat that I would be allowed to get seriously medieval on the arse* of any rules lawyer.

Or possibly something more direct involving pointy things, sharp things, heavy things and a brazier of hot coals to make those things really interesting.

If this sounds a bit excessive, you don't have my memories of the brand-new boardgame "Kingmaker" many, many years ago and one player who kept chancing their arm then waving the still-unfamiliar rulebook and saying "show me where it says I can't".

Every. Single. Time.

People have been drowned in Malmsey for less, and given that Kingmaker is set in the Wars of the Roses, you'd better believe I had plenty of opportunity for taking prisoners and doing with them what I would.

Extracting ransom is good. Exacting revenge is even better.

it sucks so bad that 'lightning magic' in every media is just some pathetic little strands of electricity. i wanna see some LIGHTNING. show me a magic setting where lightning magic lights up a room like the sun, and the bolt is only visible as an afterimage burned into your vision. I wanna see someone cast lightning and have the thunder rattling the room and shaking everyone to their core. i want lightning magic to be a split second blast of so much power it leaves everyone's senses reeling. c'mon guys don't you know what real lightning looks like? we can be doing so much better than this.
