Hey does anyone else think about how Toriel isn't doing well financially but she still makes a full pie for her kid two nights in a row and then a hearty pancake breakfast for them and their friend the next morning. Do you think about how we don't see Toriel eating the pie or the pancakes. She's eating raw granulated sugar and that's it. When she finally eats in Chapter 5 she only asks for simple (and cheap) toast with honey. Do you think about Toriel encouraging her child to go to the Festival where there is plenty of food while she stays home on her own. Do you think about how Toriel used to "LOVE her cooking shows" and "LAUGH, glowingly, along with each new recipe, feverishly taking notes on each step to make them for her family..." Do you think about Toriel never expecting this care to be reciprocated and continuing to cook for her family while she does not eat. Do you. Do you think about Toriel.

I've always been an extremely casual MILGRAM fan, but I want to take a minute to talk about the evolution of my opinion on Mikoto's trial 3, cause I think it's important.
When I saw the report, I literally about threw my phone across the room. I was spinning through the stages of grief like a fucking merry-go-round, telling everybody I knew how bad they butchered my boy.
But then, while looking for people online to validate my frustration (like a complete idiot), I came across some takes from people who... actually looked at something other than the songs (hi new mutuals, that's some of you!). And I realized I completely misinterpreted everything (and made the mistake of having an opinion without having the full picture).
One post I read said something about how "typical, middle class home[s]" (quoted from his report directly) are not immune to being abusive, and that was (embarrassingly) what it took for me to get it.
I'm not sure about Japan (I'll have to research it, or someone will have to educate me), but I know for a fact that in the United States, the systems in place to protect children are weak. They too often don't do anything unless the abuse is literally unignorable, or they can treat it like a property case in some way. So if Japan's protective systems are similar to ours, of course the report on Mikoto isn't going to include the childhood trauma. They probably never knew, because it was happening quietly behind the disguise of "well-behaved and easy-going child." (also quoted directly from his report).
The report also *only* recognizes his adulthood stress (the toxic workplace). Not only is it so very realistic for someone to go from a toxic household to a toxic workplace (abuse cycles, and such), but it's also realistic for specifically the childhood stress to go entirely ignored if the child is seen as privileged (which, that's a low bar if you're a child, since so many adults see childhood through rose-colored glasses).
Mikoto's case tells a story of childism (the belief children should be ignored, discarded or exploited for adult's comfort). And a TON of us missed it, even me.
I may write a longer analysis on this on Substack once I actually analyze the voice dramas and everything on my own, but for now this is my take. I hope getting burned at the stake by the fandom doesn't hurt too bad, cus I know this is gonna be controversial..
