ROBERT  HUMS  UNDER  HIS  BREATH  AS  HE  SCANS  THE  MENU, eyes  moving  slower  than  he  needs  to,  almost  stalling  for  time  he  doesn’t  actually  require.  The  board  above  the  counter  is  faded  from  the  sun  and  stained  with  all  kinds  of  grease,  the  prices  scratched  out  and  rewritten  in  a  hand  that’s  long  since  given  up  on  consistency.  A  place  that  knows  exactly  what  it  is.  He  respects  that.

“ Oh,  hell  yeah ”  he  says  after  a  beat,  clearly  amused  as  his  gaze  lingers  on  the  middle  of  the  board,  “ This  is  the  right  setting  for  that  kind  of  ambition ”  He  shifts  his  weight,  his  shoulder  brushing  Annie’s  as  he’s  reading  the  fine  print  like  it’s  a  contract  instead  of  a  list  of  bad  decisions  masquerading  as  dinner.  There  it  is:  The  burger  special.  He  exhales,  already  resigned.  Already  convinced.

“ They’ve  got  a  whole  platter ”  Robert  continues,  lifting  his  chin  slightly  toward  the  board,  “ Four  sliders,  double-stacked  like  they’re  overcompensating  for  something  else,  prepared  with  their  own  sauce.  The  sides  are  .  .  .  fried  onions,  a  mountain  of  fries  and  two  drinks ”

“ I’d  say  that  plate’s  so  big  it’s  legally  a  team  effort. Yes or yes? ”

WELL, THAT IS ONE WAY TO PUT IT. Robert  falls  silent  for  a  moment,  not  because  he’s  searching  for  the  right  thing  to  say,  but  because  the  phrase  settles  in  his  head  and  loops  there,  as  stubborn  as  a  bad  song.  Duct  tape  and  sheer  determination.  He’s  heard  versions  of  it  before,  usually  dressed  up  nicer,  usually  paired  with  a  smile  that  never  quite  makes  it  to  the  eyes.

Beef  shifts  at  his  side,  nails  clicking  softly  against  the  pavement  as  he  resettles,  leaning  his  weight  in  like  he’s  checking  that  Robert’s  still  there.  They’re  out  on  the  street,  halfway  between  places,  where  traffic  hisses  past  and  tires  cutting  through  damp  pavement,  washed  in  bright  neon  from  a  late-open  shop  flickering  like  it’s  about  to  give  up.  Everything  around  him  looks  functional.  Barely.  Which  feels  a  little  on  the  nose.

“ You  know  the  thing  about  duct  tape? ”,  Robert  says  finally,  his  gaze  drifting  to  the  street  before  returning  to  Stiles,  “ It  holds.  For  a  while.  But  it’s  not  meant  to  be  permanent.  Neither  is  running  on  willpower  and  bad  decisions.  Believe  me,  I’d  know ” His dog tugs  once  at  the  leash,  impatient,  and  Robert  adjusts  his  grip  without  breaking  stride.  His  expression  doesn’t  soften,  but  there’s  something  thoughtful  in  the  crease  of  his  brow  now,  like  he’s  already  several  steps  ahead  of  the  conversation.

“ So  .  .  .  how  do  you  figure  working  at  SDN  fixes  that?  Because  if  you’re  looking  for  something  sturdier  than  duct  tape,  this  job  isn’t  exactly  known  for  being  gentle ”

ROBERT  DIDN'T  LOOK  UP  FROM  THE  SLIDE  DECK  AT  FIRST. The  projector  behind  him  flooded  the  conference  room  in  cold  blue  light,  the  kind  that  flattened  faces  and  made  everything  feel  slightly  unreal.  A  schematic  bled  across  the  wall,  all  kinds  of  lines  and  annotations  layered  over  one  another.  He  clicked  to  the  next  slide  out  of  instinct  alone,  already  moving  ahead  before  the  last  one  had  finished  settling. 

“ La  la  .  .  .  what  now? ”,  the  words  left  him  without  thought,  dry  and  distracted.  Another  click.  Another  diagram.  “ You  know  what?  No.  Don’t  even  answer  that.  I  don’t  have  the  emotional  bandwidth  to  unpack  whatever  it  is ”

Only  then  did  he  turn.  His  gaze  settled  with  the  slow,  deliberate  focus  he  reserved  for  complications  he  hadn’t  planned  for.  She  was  new.  Capable.  Restless  in  that  particular  way  people  were  before  the  job  taught  them  how  much  of  it  was  waiting.  How  much  of  it  was  standing  still  while  something  important  happened  somewhere  else.  Robert  cleared  his  throat  and  leaned  a  hip  against  the  edge  of  the  table,  posture  easing  just  enough  to  suggest  this  was  a  conversation  rather  than  a  lecture.  His  voice  dropped,  instinctively,  as  if  the  cracked  conference  room  and  its  two-way  glass  might  respect  discretion  if  he  pretended  hard  enough.

“ Okay.  Here’s  the  deal ”,  he  said,  “ This  presentation? ”  A  vague  gesture  toward  the  wall.  “ Mandatory.  Painful.  It  does,  however,  end ”  He  paused  long  enough  to  make  sure  the  point  landed  before  continuing.  “ You  stay  with  me  through  it  and  I’ll  take  you  to  the  ice  rink  afterward. Not  the  sad  public  one  with  the  flickering  lights.  The  good  one.  After  hours ”  For  a  split  second,  something  almost  like  a  smile  tugged  at  his  mouth. 

Aloud,  he  finished:  “ Deal? ”
