I’m just gonna throw this out there for the world, and I promise to never mention it again, because this is an ongoing issue I’m dealing with both on and offline. I want others to hear this because I sure needed to:
NOT ALL WHITE PEOPLE ARE RACIST.
MY BEING WHITE DOESN’T GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO TELL ME MY OPINION DOESN’T MATTER SIMPLY BECAUSE OF MY SKIN COLOR. MY OPINION IS AS DESERVING OF RESPECT AS ANYONE ELSES.
I AM ALLOWED TO WEIGH IN (RESPECTFULLY) ON ISSUES THAT MINORITIES FACE. WHY? BECAUSE THEN I’LL LEARN ABOUT WHAT KINDS OF THINGS ARE REALLY GOING ON, AND WHAT I CAN DO TO HELP.
I AM ALLOWED TO USE WHATEVER PHRASING OR SLANG I WANT, REGARDLESS OF MY GENDER, RACE, SEXUALITY, WHATEVER, AS LONG AS IT IS RESPECTFUL AND NOT SAID WITH ANY INTENT TO INJURE OR PERSECUTE. (This is, of course, excluding slurs, which are intended to be degrading and harmful)
I DO NOT HAVE TO BE A MINORITY TO DESERVE RESPECT.
I DO NOT HAVE TO BE GAY/TRANS/WHATEVER TO DESERVE RESPECT.
I DO NOT HAVE TO BE A MINORITY TO VOICE AN OPINION.
When you tell me these things and make me feel like less than a person, you are dong to me EXACTLY what you think I’m doing to you..
I am so tired of this culture of hate that Tumblr is propagating. I don’t deserve to feel like “privileged cis scum” (actual phrasing) because I was born white and straight. As a reminder, I’m a domestic abuse survivor living with some really serious mental health concerns. I have less than $1,000 to my name and I live in a tiny studio apartment. I cannot afford to go to college. I am far from “privileged.” The fact that none of that means anything because I’m a middle-class white girl is, frankly, disgusting. Hate breeds hate, and I really think we need to step back and remember that.
EDIT: I know it says ‘dong’ instead of ‘doing’ but I like it and it made me laugh so I’m gonna keep it that way.
The problem with this; Privilege does not entail wealth nor does it erase your struggles. It discusses the privilege that you obtain from your skin color, such as the ability to walk out of a bad neighborhood at night and be asked if you're okay instead of being thrown in jail or killed. You make a lot of valid points, but your misunderstanding of privilege can destroy your argument.
