I belong to quick, futile moments of intense feeling. Yes, I belong to moments. Not to people.

I found these really cool mushrooms in the woods yesterday
lake natron
(photos by Nick Brandt)Oh my stars.
Lake Natron is a soda lake in Tanzania, which is home to millions of flamingos, despite essentially being a PINK LAKE OF DEATH
the waters are a deep, alkaline red known for turning animal corpses into stone
To be clear, the lake doesn’t harm animals, and is home to a thriving ecosystem. However, the high level of sodium carbonate does mummify the corpses of birds and other creatures that die from natural causes.
(photos by Nick Brandt. The naturally mummified remains of these birds were collected and posed for effect.)
Despite the creepy nature of the petrified carcasses, Lake Natron is a flamingo’s paradise, which I can definitely get behind.

As a seasoned practicioner of ‘social distancing’, there are a never-ending list of activities with which to occupy oneself during these unsettling and exiguous times. A mere sampling below:
i) partake in an opera viewing (or two, or three…) (x)(x)(x) ii) learn a new language (the better with which to summon ancient gods) iii) plan a music/drink pairing (x) iv) throw a surrealist fine dining party (for one), à la dalí (x) v) hold a séance (x) vi) peruse online archives (x)(x)(x) vii) write an epic poem viii) purchase a chateau (x) ix) plan the ideal world-travelling itinerary (food, lodging, and activities in each place along the way in painstaking detail) x) establish a secret society (password and uniform are mandatory)
How to explore castles
-when walking down hallways, voices will come from different directions. Do not respond.
-some of the doors to the rooms are shut. They are shut for a reason. Do not attempt to enter.
-Consequently, some doors may open as you walk past. They want you to go in there. Don’t.
-If you see the edge of a cloak or a dress, it’s the old spirits from when the castle was young. They are there to help you escape.
-Don’t go near dark shadows. They aren’t shadows at all.
-If the ground shakes, the castle is waking up again. Get out.
-Sometimes, all of the dust and cobwebs will disappear, and the castle will look welcoming and lively again. This isn’t real.
-If you hear footsteps, run.
-Ignore the baby you hear crying.
- Stay away from the vines that grow in the castle. It’s a trap.
- the piano moves around to different rooms. That’s okay, just be careful if it starts to play.
pro tip for all of my self-sufficiency friends: a lot of the skills and fun things you can do to provide for yourself are historical skills. if you look into homesteading history around the 1800s you will find a ton of stuff that you can still do today. i learn a lot of these things at my job and i’m always delighted when i demonstrate them for the public and people are surprised to realize how easy most of them are to do with a little bit of time!
for example: i know how much most of us adore baking bread from scratch. did y’all know you can make your own butter relatively from scratch as well? all you need is cream from the grocery store and a jar and the ability to shake the shit out of it. a super simplified version of a butter churn.
you can make dyes at home with nothing more than a few choice plants. depending on where you live, of course– here in the south, black walnuts are everywhere, and those make an awesome brown dye with nothing more than some water and the nuts. doesn’t even need a mordant (depending on the fiber of the cloth you’re dying)
you can make your own firestarter or glue with pine sap (which is also useful for a whole host of other things!) and a diy double-boiler (which can be as simple as what i do– an old pot and a few sheets of tin foil)
you can spin your own yarn using the oldest known method of creating fibers: a drop spindle. get yourself some wool from a local farmer or a craft store and get to spinning (just don’t get frustrated when it back-twists!)– there are TONS of tutorials for diy drop spindles out there, too, most of which can be made with things like pencils and old cd’s
there are a ton of other historical skills that may require a bit more tools and research, but they fit right into the niche interests of alot of y’all i see on here talking about providing for yourself and farm skills, that kind of stuff.
things like basket weaving, broom making, canning, knitting and crocheting, hell even making your own rope (not recommended unless you have the patience of a saint), open hearth cooking, simple pottery, quilting, splitting wood and woodworking, chair caning… not to mention the vast doors that open when you get your hands on a bit of simple carpentry experience.
as long as you do your research first, you can do almost anything on your own. we’ve done so in the past of our history and now that we have modern conveniences to make it all easier, what’s stopping us from learning what we want to learn when we can?

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU COULD EVER REBLOG
Sometimes I see posts with medieval art and somebody demanding to know what was going on during the middle ages. I therefore present to you a list:
In 897, Pope Stephen VI had his predecessor's body dug up and tried for heresy. The corpse was found guilty and thrown in the Tiber.
In 1122 or thereabouts, Heloise de Argenteuil named her son Astrolabe.
In 1141, Empress Matilda was besieged in a castle by her cousin Steve, and escaped by pretending to be dead and getting carted out with the corpses.
In 1314 King Edward II made soccer illegal. This was the same King Edward II whose wife Isabella had him killed by shoving a fireplace poker up his ass.
In 1325 some guys from Modena, Italy, stole the bucket from the well in neighbouring Bologna. The two cities fought a battle over it. Modena won, and still has the bucket on display in a museum.
In 1355 students at Oxford rioted because a pub served them sub-par beer.
In 1374 France and Belgium suffered an outbreak of 'dancing plague'. The affected would dance until they died of heart attacks.
In 1379 a guy named Perrinot Muet was trampled to death by pigs. The pigs were tried for murder, found guilty, and hanged.
Between 1410 and 1419, there were three different guys in different parts of Europe all claiming to be Pope. They each excommunicated the other two and all their adherents.
In 1456, Pope Callixtus the Third excommunicated Halley's Comet.
In conclusion, a lot went on during the middle ages.
The first funny bitch was Cain, who straight up lied to God after killing his brother.
God: where’s Abel?
Cain: fuck if I know??? I’m not in charge of him
It is TRAGIC that you can’t read this in the original Hebrew.
God: Where’s the Sheepkeeper?
Cain: Do I LOOK like a Brotherkeeper?
Oh my gods, this is priceless.
