Oh, hey, hereās the thread I wrote on my twitter! Advice for getting started drawing backgrounds~ :)
I jotted down for a friend of mine some tips and notes on how I approach drawing hair, and things I keep in mind while doing so, and thought Iād share. There are loads of other ways to do it, and the learning never stops, so I hope this helps!
Skin Coloring Troubles?
One of my tips for learning to color skin, is to watch makeup videos!
Now I know they can be annoying sometimes, but hear me out.
Makeup videos point out vital things in emphasizing promenant facial features, such as where to put highlighter and bronzer.
Highlighter, or in an artists case, lighter skin color or shine, goes on defining features (e.g. brow line, cheek bones, nose, etc).
Bronzer on the other hand is put on the parts of the face that need to be ādeeperā and darker. An example of this would be between the cheek bone and the jaw bone, as well as around the top part of the forehead / hairline.
Of course it is important to blend just like in makeup, but this is just an example of where to start out.
Keep in mind that different facial shapes look better with different shading, and that light sources are important to consider as well!
A Guide to Making Up Diseases (as Explained by a Biologist)
So listen up yāall, nothing drives me crazier as both a writer and a scientist than seeing alien diseases that make no fuckinā sense in a human body.Ā
If youāre talking about alien diseases in a non-human character, you can ignore all this.
But as far as alien diseases in humans go, please remember:
DISEASE SYMPTOMS ARE AN IMMUNE RESPONSE.
Fever? A response to help your immune cells function faster and more efficiently to destroy invaders.
Sore/scratchy throat? An immune response. Diseases that latch onto the epithelium of the throat (the common cold, the flu) replicate there, and your body is likeĀ āuh no fuckinā thanksā and starts to slough off those cells in order to stop the replication of new virus in its tracks. So when it feels like your throat is dying? guess what it literally is. And the white spots you see with more severe bacterial infections are pus accumulation, which is basically dead white blood cells, and the pus is a nice and disgusting way of getting that shit outta here.
(No one really knows why soreness and malaise happens, but some scientists guess that itās a byproduct of immune response, and others suspect that itās your bodyās way of telling you to take it easy)
headache? usually sinus pressure (or dehydration, which isnāt an immune response but causes headaches by reducing blood volume and causing a general ruckus in your body, can be an unfortunate side effect of a fever) caused by mucous which is an immune response to flush that nasty viral shit outta your face.
Rashes? an inflammatory response. Your lymphocytes see a thing they donāt like and theyāre likeĀ āhEY NOWā and release a bunch of chemicals that tell the cells that are supposed to kill it to come do that. Those chemicals cause inflammation, which causes redness, heat, and swelling. They itch because histamine is a bitch.
fatigue? your body is doing a lotāgive it a break!
here is a fact:
during the Spanish 1918 Plague, a very strange age group succumbed to the illness. The very young and very old were fine, but people who were seemingly healthy and in the prime of life (young adults) did not survive. This is because that virus triggered an immune response called a cytokine storm, which basically killed everything in sight and caused horrific symptoms like tissue death, vasodilation and bleedingābasically a MASSIVE inflammatory response that lead to organ damage and death. Those with the strongest immune systems took the worst beating by their own immune responses, while those with weaker immune systems were fine.
So when youāre thinking of an alien disease, think through the immune response.
Where does this virus attack? Look up viruses that also attack there and understand what the immune system would do about it.Ā
Understand symptoms that usually travel togetherājoint pain and fever, for example.
So please, please: no purple and green spotted diseases. No diseases that cause glamorous fainting spells and nothing else. No mystical eye-color/hair-color changing diseases. If you want these things to happen, use magic or some shit or alien physiology, but when itās humans, it doesnāt make any fuckinā sense.Ā
This has been a rant and I apologize for that.Ā
As a microbiologist, I think the main advice here is to take into account real diseases and conditions before you make up a fictional disease or condition.
Some bacteria have physical effects on the body that cause symptoms (EHEC varitype of E. coli ruptures cells at the site of infection, which is usually the large intestine, hence, you have bloody stools from it). If your alien orĀ āmade-upā bacteria or virus causes a certain symptom, find a real bacteria or virus that causes the same symptom.Ā They need to behave in a similar fashion and have similar physical traits. Bacteria and viruses do not evolve functions becauseĀ theyāre cool. They evolve them because theyāre useful.
There are also dietary issues, medications and chronic diseases that cause physical changesācopper toxicity can cause an orange ring around the iris, an eyelash lengthening āmedicineā causes darkening and/or color change of the iris,Ā hemochromatosis (sometimes known asĀ āBronze Diabetesā) causes darkening of the skin etc. If you want to use this sort of thing, again, find something real that causes it and work through things logically.Ā
Play your cards right, do your research and you will have hordesĀ of readers in the scientific and/or biological community cheering, screaming and crying because they love your work.
@biologyweeps, this feels up your speculative alley - anything to add?
Ohhh.
Iād like to add that the same goes for parasitic infections, more or less. If you want a certain trait for a diseases, cross reference with existing parasites to see whatās happening, and also make sure you check what happens if you put a parasite in a host itās not meant for. We can sensibly assume that alien parasites that encounter a human would beĀ āwtfā and potentially cause complications that would never happen in the native species. Maybe in the native species it causes a cold like reaction at worst, but in a human the parasites may attempt to nest in a totally different tissue. Maybe that causes widespread tissue damage by the parasite itself as it tries to borrow in? Again, check existing cases to see what horrific things could happen.
While weāre on it, also check how your disease is communicated. One of the things that annoy me so much with zombie movies is thatĀ ābitingā is supposed to be a very effective way to spread it. Itās not. Anything that requires such intimate contact is actually kind of hard to communicate. Airborne things? Now there we are at potentialĀ āoh shitā territory. So if you want your disease to sweep the country/planet/ship, pick something thatās easily communicable.Ā
Also consider the incubation period. How long until someone shows symptoms? Are they already infectious to other people before showing symptoms or still after they stopped? As mentioned above, illness symptoms are in most part immune responses and the immune system needs time to get up and run. Give it that time.
And while weāre at it⦠there are symptoms that arenāt immune responses. For example the cramps that accompany tetanus are caused by a toxin the bacterium produces that damages/destroys nerve cells. Viruses can cause tissue damage when they insert in cells, replicate in there and destroy the cell on exit. Think of how HIV can wreak havoc on the human immune system by killing of a specific kind of cell. Depending on where your viruses likes to replicate it can massively impact the look of it. Something that destroys liver cells will look different (and if survived may come with different long term damage) than something that prefers skin or muscle cells. If itās alien also consider how it might behave differently in its original host.Ā
Fantastic post, I can relate to OP 100%. More points:
Nothing makes me groan harder than a made-up plague which gives anyone X diseases within seconds to MINUTES. Iām looking at you, most zombie movies. And if your alien/synthetic/sci-fi pathogen is at all like a virus (read: no metabolism of its own, just genetic material of some kind which it uses to reprogram host cells), then the rate at which it mupltiplies is limited to what normal human cells can do. Now, viruses can multiply pretty damn fast. But give you symptoms within MINUTES? Nope.
So long as weāre on the subject of epidemiology, and speed:
Ā "Oh no, patient died less than a day after being infected! Weāre all doomed!ā Wrong. While that SOUNDS scary, a plague that kills that quickly would not actually be that dangerous, and would be unlikely to have evolved to begin with. A disease needs to pass itself on to at least one other person, on average, before it kills its host, or itās doomed to extinction. Any virus that kills its host before it has a decent chance of being passed on will basically quarantine itself. (Of course, you CAN do this if you handwave its origins as being made in a lab or whatever, just know it wonāt realistically pose a truly terrifying threat on a population level.)
Mmore ideas for a realistically scary made-up plague:
- Long incubation period (say, a couple of weeks), making quarantine much more difficult, disruptive to everyday life, and unlikely to succeed. - Infectious period != symptomatic period, i.e. someone can spread the disease before they appear sick. (Note: if this condition is met, then dying very rapidly after *manifesting symptoms* becomes plausible again, more plausible than dying quickly after being infected.)
- The possibility or relative prevalence of healthy carriers - think Typhoid Mary. I.e. rare people who skip the symptoms part entirely but are still infectious.
- The disease is transmitted through an animal that is hard to keep out, the definition of āhard to keep outā would depend on the setting here. Poor water sanitation means waterborne bacteria and microscopic parasites would be a huge danger. Insect or arachnid (e.g. tick) bites could be a danger in almost any setting..
- As an alternative to above point: the bacterial/viral/parasite/whatever can form spores that are fucking EVERYWHERE. (Read: the reason for both tetanus and botulinum poisoning.)
- The pathogen is both dangerous and impossible to fully exterminate through vaccination because it has a huge population of reservoir hosts. (Reservoir hosts are entire SPECIES that can carry and propagate the disease without being affected much by it.) Same way the Black Plague is still out there because a shitton of rodent species passively carry it.
And many more things if you do some research for inspiration! Pathogens are scary, fascinating things, and I really wish we had more realistic fictional representation of them than āvirus which causes zombie behaviour in 3 seconds flatā (looking at you, 28 Days Later) and āvirus which can MIND-CONTROL people who view the main carrier through a COMPUTER SCREENā (wtf???) (looking at you, Jessica Jones).
@scriptmedic might this interest you as well?
Made a quick tutorial about drawing brick walls. In step 2 I wroteĀ āhorisontalā, but it isĀ āverticalā. Whoops.
Webcomic tips
In the conclusion for now, some things Iād really recommend doing if youāre seriously considering making a webcomic (or really a comic in general). Some of these donāt really apply to strips or gag-a-day type of comics, but Iām not talking about those here.
1. Write down ideas\sketch stuff, LEGIBLY. āIām gonna remember it laterā NEVER works. And if you scribble it somewhere on a piece of paper, youād better scan it or retype in one doc later, because tiny notes always get lost among other doodles in my skethbooks.
(i know itās hard to keep everything clean and organized, but this mess is just not productive)
If your project is a collaboration, save your conversations. If youāre working alone, make a blog for your ramblings. You have no clue what tears of relief I cry when I open that blog and rememeber I donāt have to painstakingly look through my heaps of sketchbooks and folders for a tiny idea Iām not even sure I wrote down a few months ago.
2. Inspiration folders, or even better, inspo blog with tags also help with collecting and remembering ideas. Color schemes, landscapes, style inspirations, atmospheric stuff, maybe some photo references, all those neat things.
3. Basic tier: character design sheets. Top tier: common poses, expressions. God tier: outfits they wear throughout the comic. Holy cow tier: turnaround sheets for all those outfits.
(Iād die trying to find good pages for references without these)
4. If you havenāt finished detailing the plot, donāt even think about moving on to drawing the comic. Youāre gonna regret it when you come up with a really cool plot element that canāt be incorporated anymore because youāve already drawn all the parts you couldāve tweaked.
5. Donāt just define the plot, make a script. Writing down the lines and the brief description of the actions serves me fine:
(notice that I approximately divided the pages & the text thatād go to each panel on a page)
6. Hard mode: make thumbnails for all the pages, if possible. At least whenever a new chapter starts.Ā
7. If your story involves some convoluted chronology shenanigans, youād better write down the events of your timeline in the chronological order.
8. Backgrounds. You canāt avoid them, bro. Like half of the comics are backgrounds, especially if your story involves a lot of adventuring and looking around. I know it hurts, but youāll have to become friends with them. Read some tutorials, practice on photos, go out and sketch some streets, use 3d programs (like Google Sketch) to understand the perspective, use sites like houseplans to visualize your buildings better, I donāt know. Just be prepared for their imminent evil. Ā
9. If youāre drawing digitally, pick a brush size for the lines and stick with it. You donāt want your lines and detail levels to look all wonky and inconsistent in different panels. And I donāt mean the cool stylistic varying lines, I mean this:
Also, things on the background should have thinner and/or lighter lines to avoid distraction. Usually less details too, unless youāre making a busy background with a simple foreground to help it pop out. Or wanna draw the attention to an object on the bg.
10. Readable fonts. Even if you chose to ignore people with poor sight or dyslexia, the majority of your readers arenāt gonna be excited about struggling to decypher this:
Also, as much as I love my black speech bubbles, colorful text on black still kinda hurts the eyes. I wouldnāt recommend doing that for all the characters. Black speech bubbles are usually used for creepy, inhuman voices. And yes, having a colorful outline in this case helps.
11. Probably newsflash, but did you know that panels have their place, order and functions? They do! My favourite thing ever is how I used panels when I was like 12:
(comics aināt rocket science, but this one is)
The composition of the panels and word balloons always serve for a better reading experience. They guide your eyes over the page, so that you never feel lost or confused. The images in the comic equal frames in a movie, so itās pretty damn important in what order you look at things and how quickly you can understand whatās going on!
(Eric Shanower & Scottie Youngās Wizard of Oz)
12. One update a week is fine for testing waters. Donāt overestimate yourself, especially if you have a pretty busy life outside it. A stable comic that updates slowly, but regularly is better than an unpredictable erratic one. You can always pick up the pace later, if you feel confident enough.
13. Try to always have a buffer - a couple of pages in reserve. If youāre making the pages much faster than youāre updating, this shouldnāt be a problem. But if those paces are equally the same, itās goddamn HARD. But on the other hand, if something happens and you skip an update, those come in handy.
If youāre looking at this list and thinking āwow thatās a LOT of workā, youāre totally right. And itās okay to be intimidated at first! But thatās why itās important to start with something small. Once you get the formula down, these things will be natural to you.
@sidelley
1. Ah Fai was a chief animator for McDullāsĀ animated features. Heās super cool. Ultimate senpai.Ā
2. Previous post on breakdowns right hereĀ
Some thoughts on acceleration and force
I presented this in the order of how I slowly understood the trick of delivering force -Ā first an abstract concept of impact taught by Ah Fai, then a more complicated discovery on the acceleration pattern, last back to a more abstract concept of breakdowns.Ā
Like Iāve previously stressed, 2D animation is everything but one single approach. Thereās no one rule that rules them all, but interchangeable ideas with math, or physics, or music, etc. Thereās no āperfectā animation either, but what is perceived as organic and dynamic. E.g., using the Fibonacci numbers to animate didnāt bring me a perfect animation! On the other hand, a tiny change in the pattern could already make the feeling of force so much more powerful.Ā
Not so much of a tutorial than a personal experience. I hope you find this interesting hahahaĀ
This advice is helpful.
Tezuka said much of the same! This is the great advantage anime has over Disney-style animationā tons and tons of frames make thing look very smooth and pretty, but completely removes the sense of genuine IMPACT from action sequences. Theyāre not as snappy! Watching a frame-by-frame of a Bruce Lee flick, youāll see a move executed in very few shots.Ā
Words to replace said, except this actually helps
I got pretty fed up with looking for words to replace said because they werenāt sorted in a way I could easily use/find them for the right time. So I did some myself.

do u have any tips on how to paint that fluorescent skin effect??
sorry im not quite sure what you mean but im assuming youre talking about the rainbow shit
i dont know all the art terms so bear with me
to add to this post,Ā i start by just putting some random colours down then blending them out. for trolls i use lots of green blue and purple cos i guess my ocular cones n rods tell me cool colours are closer to grey than warm ones are
then i pick a colour for the high points and blend out with adjacent colours to get that rainbow effect
yellow is a good colour cos you can blend from yellow to red or yellow to blue and it will look nice + allow you to include lots of different colours which adds to the holographic/iridescent/whatever effect and still give an impression of depth without having to add heaps of black and muddying up the colours
you dont have to use yellow though, i just reckon its the easiest jumping off point. below i just changed the hue in photoshop n got cyan. it still looks like its got depth and all that but now are colours are limited, we missing yellow and orange. try different shit out though. pink is nice tooĀ
these are like fairly bad pics but below are some ways to do this with yellow as the colour of your high point/bits where the most light is bouncing off
think of the arrow going from the highest to lowest points. i like doing it the way i have in the middle pic cos i reckon its a bit more fun and dynamic. but yeah dont limit yourself to yellow! plenty of other colours out there in the big wide world. and dont worry if it looks garish you can always edit it later onĀ
anyway you dont have to think too long and hard about like colour order or anything though. the main thing is just putting the right colours next to one another, so if youve got a green patch and a red patch blend them together with some yellow, orange/red goes between yellow and purple, etc etc
sometimes its better not to plan things too much

@mariesjaenne JAY LOOK SAND ARTTTT
Thereās three main groups: the flexors and extensors each take one half of the forearm, and the ridge muscles sit on top like a little tiara. Each group has itās own unique form. Learning their anatomy will help you design awesomely dynamic arms.
Letās try to make forearms manageable to draw. This is a body part most artists donāt quite understand. It can be real intimidating if you donāt know the muscles.
The arm has a simple chain design and the forms interlock down the arm.
To avoid the snowman effect, use straight, angular lines and look for asymmetries. Compare the apex of both sides of the forearm to understand the curvature better. Notice that the flexors reach lower on the wrist than the extensors and ridge muscles.
Look for this kind of thing when youāre drawing the gesture of the muscle groups. A wave rhythm where the curve on one side leads into the next curve on the other side.
Iāll explain more in-depth in the videoĀ - www.proko.com/179
