yeah apparently they had to totally redesign some of loboto’s mind in psychonauts 3 because ironically the lighting effects for the temporal lobe seizures were triggering epilepsy in the beta testers

I feel like the next step for the Psychonauts series deepening its portrayal of mental health issues is to revisit Loboto’s mind and thoroughly explore it alongside him in an attempt to improve his quality of life, in the process expanding the canon parameters of what a mental world is like, how to navigate it, how many layers it can have, etc, as well as exploring how a person is affected by severe, compounding mental problems that have gone untreated and the mechanics of how they interact with each other and the different components of the mind.
I don’t think we’re necessarily going to get this, and these concepts will likely be explored through another character if they are addressed, and honestly I’ll just be happy if we ever get more games in the series. which is why I’m probably going to try to turn this concept into a fangame in rpgmaker or something.
thinking about yandere loboto, by which I mean man wouldn’t it would be fucked up if after cal lost his arm he put it in the freezer so he could do something really really funny on valentines day
baseline cal: taxidermizes his severed arm and sets it up holding a bouquet to surprise his partner as a prank
yandere cal: puts on a midcentury apron and a tooth necklace and lovingly prepares a “roast” that he insists his partner eat with him, watching them far too intently the entire time and asking them if they like it
I like characterizing Loboto as the type of person with OSDD who has such little self awareness that their friends can distinguish between their different “hats”, but they themselves have no idea they even “wear” different “hats”
given how much Cal’s mind blocks out to protect his conscious ego, I imagine his mental world has an overly active immune system where pretty much any attempt to access a negative memory will result in a fight with some kind of fucked up medical body horror monster
there’s so much foreshadowing re: Loboto’s backstory and “real” personality (ie, that he’s actually brain damaged and apparently suffering from some kind arrested development or regression instead of just a generic crazy sadistic doctor) in PN1, from the surgical scars on his texture to the leaky bathtub in the brain tumbler to Raz’s comments about how he feels like he knows Caligosto after living in his skin, that I’m just like, oh my god, it took over a DECADE to drop that reveal, Tim Schaefer must have been getting an arm cramp holding onto that shit for so long
Supervillain monologue where it very gradually becomes clear that the science facts they're dramatically declaiming don't actually have anything to do with their current evil scheme and they're just taking advantage of a captive audience to rattle on about things that interest them.
oh wow okay I just realized that Gloria probably has bipolar 2 since her lows are very intense and her highs are characterized by being extremely cheerful and productive; that probably made her life very difficult because it means she’d cycle between being a happy, charismatic high-achiever and being so depressed she has trouble taking care of herself. people may have accused her of being a flake or having a poor work ethic, or just not being able to “take it”.
