Mario Lemieux in Fandom

What’s the point?

Because Hockey RPF fandom is largely situated on AO3 and Tumblr (in terms of where fics are posted and authors hang out, respectively), I’ve focused my attention on those two sites. I’m interested in the positive portrayal of Mario Lemieux by fandom (where he most often appears as a mentor or a father/uncle figure in fics) and the lack of discussion surrounding the allegations against him.

First up is a rundown of the allegations that Lemieux was complicit in the rape of Jane Doe by Dan Quinn. This section contains four newspaper articles and an opinion from the Supreme Court of Minnesota. Again, content warning for sexual assault.

I might not have met taylor but it gives me so much hope to see how hard she tries to meet as many of us as possible. So many celebrities meet very few fans and they make them pay 2,000$ and I’m very grateful that I admire someone who doesn’t do that but instead reaches out to us. a rough guide to interacting with celebrities on social media

• don’t expect them to be perfect. they’re human too, and so they’re probably going to mess up at some point. if you put them on a pedestal they’re going to fall off of it spectacularly and it’s going to be upsetting for you.

•you’re allowed to call them out when they do mess up. it doesn’t make you less of a fan, and if you explain politely and clearly they’re probably going to respect you.

•HOWEVER it is completely not okay to insult someone who messes up or to send them death threats. that kind of thing is horrible and really scary for the person involved, who probably doesn’t deserve it.

•don’t send sexually explicit messages. nobody wants to read those and you’re going to make the celeb and other fans incredibly uncomfortable. if you think it, please keep it to yourself.

• don’t enquire about their personal lives or pressure them to share something they don’t want to share. they have their own social media account in order to choose what they share about themselves and some celebs like to keep their personal lives private.

• if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say it!!! you don’t need to tell a celebrity that you have a negative opinion of them or of something they’ve done. if it’s constructive criticism you might be alright but nobody cares if you just plain don’t like something.

• if the person you are a fan of does something that is clearly really bad, don’t deny it or continue to support them regardless. this is upsetting for anyone who has been hurt by their actions and, honestly, you deserve better influences in your life.

PLEASE REMEMBER - a little rant

(This isn’t aimed at anyone in particular, just some trends that I really find disturbing.) People cross so many boundaries on social media when interacting with celebrities and it is not okay.

It is not okay to harass them.

It is not okay to send them hate.

Celebrities aren’t your friends.

They aren’t your mom and dad.

Celebrities do not owe you anything.

So knock it off.

A lot of celebrities barely interact with their fans. Meanwhile, Taylor is just chilling on the Internet making jokes with her fans, seeks them out at events, takes endless photos and gives hugs without complaining because she knows how much it means to them, gives gifts and has invited fans into her home, checks on their well-being, offers kinds words and advice, and has calmly taken on the role of mother to the fandom without even thinking twice. If that’s not love and appreciation of her fans, I don’t know what is. 

We may not always show it, Taylor, but I hope you always remember how much we do appreciate what you’ve done, and continue to do, for us. You don’t have to do any of this, but we’re thankful every day that you do. Thank you for being such a kind, genuine person. It really means a lot to us.
