“I really, really need to talk to a doctor, do you know where anyone is?” Dixie asked the first person she saw, not having been able to track her doctor down for some reason. She was freaking out right now and time was ticking on and on and she needed to talk about what was going on with her with somebody, right now.

Sidney whirled around when she heard the girl’s urgent tone asking for a doctor. She hurried out of the nurses’ station and stepped up to the young woman and the other patient she’d stopped. “Did you say you needed a doctor? I’m Dr. Seuss-- what can I do for you?

“Are you a head doctor, like a therapist? ‘cause I already got one of those.”

“A therapist? No, I’m a doctor, for everything except the head, mostly. I can explain what I’m going to do before we start if you’d like.”

Eden gave her ex-wife a nod, accompanied by a sweet smile. Was it really great, though? The question held too much weight and depth, and it was one that the blonde wasn’t too keen on dwelling on for too long. 

There was more nodding as Sidney spoke, filling Eden in on the mundane bits of her journey— bits that Eden was fairly familiar with. It was that last sentence, those five words that caught Eden’s attention. Eyebrows raised a tad, and Eden looked at Sidney with a soft simle. “Really? That’s.. that great, Sidney. It went well, I’m assuming?”

Sidney kind of froze as soon as the words had left her mouth, her eyes bugging out slightly when she realized she’d said it out loud. Eden’s response made her feel less exposed, though, and she breathed a soft sigh of relief, looking down at the floor with a nod. “Yeah, I... I’m going to meetings three times a week. It’s... It’s as much as I can manage now that I’m working again. I... I’m still early... i-in my sob-- sobriety, but I have two and a half months. And that’s... That’s the longest I’ve ever had. With no slip ups.”

She was hesitant to share, not sure if Eden really wanted to invest any time or energy just yet in knowing that Sidney was trying to do better. But she was, however, eager to show Eden that she really cared this time, and that it was honest-to-God sobriety that she sought out for herself, not just because Eden wanted her to.

“I don’t need a doctor…”

Sidney tilted her head, stepping back to give the little boy some space. “Why do you say that?” She leaned over and placed her hands on her knees to get closer to Elias’ level. “You might not feel sick, but I still have to make sure everything is working the way it’s supposed to, like when you take a car to the mechanic, right?”

“Oh! Sorry… I forgot…” Holly had in fact, not forgotten. She simply had better things to do. For example, right now she was pacing around her room, coming up with a wonderful new story where she was an orphan forced to leave her home and go on a quest to find a wizard. However, something the doctor said piqued her interest. “Wait… Dr. Seuss? Like the author! Are you his daughter? That’s so cool!!”

Sidney laughed, though it was mostly at Holly’s great enthusiasm. “Um, no, there’s no relation, actually.” Her father was most definitely not the famed author, though nearly half of the patients Sidney ever treated asked the exact same question. “Seuss is a common German last name, actually, but I guess I can’t claim that there’s no common ancestor between us. But anyway, would you please follow me to my office?”

Lei hated even thinking about how sick she was. It just made her feel worse all round and her thoughts spun round and round and round. What was she going to do? “Okay… yeah.” Lei moved to follow her out of the room and in the direction of her office. “Sure.”

Sidney led the way down the hall, slowing her usually swift pace to allow Lei to walk comfortably. “So again, my name is Dr. Seuss, and I’m your doctor for the time being. If you have any problems, I will be the person you come to for health needs.” They crossed over to the section of the hospital that held the medical offices, and Sidney looked Lei’s way. “We’ll start with your exam in this room over here, but my office is the second on the left if you ever need to find me.” She opened the door to the exam room, holding it open for her patient.

“Three days,” Eden repeated with a slight head nod, really trying to wrap her head around whatever was happening. In theory, three days wasn’t that many days. But somehow, in that moment, it felt like three days was way too long for Sidney to be back without even saying a word. Their communication skills had improved miraculously a little while after Sidney moved, but over the last few months, there’d been a lot of ghosting. Which was fair, they both were women who led busy lives. Though, Eden still wished ( irrationally so ) that despite the lack of communication on both ends, that Sidney would’ve thouht to tell her she was coming. Not that Eden would’ve if she was in her shoes, but she hated being this caught off guard.

She nodded, eyes flicking back to the glowing screen before her. “Fine. We’ve been fine. Good’s probably a better word— fine’s probably an understatement.” Emmy had been on a little gratitude kick ever since Thanksgiving, and it was really starting to rub off on Eden. “What about you? What’ve you been up to?”

Sidney nodded and smiled, a bit over-enthusiastically. “Th-that’s great! I’m so glad to hear that!” It had been the longest time she’d spent without seeing Emmy, and it was hard to not feel overwhelming guilt for losing touch with the child she loved while she started to become a real person. Ultimately, it was up to Eden to invite Sidney to spend time with Emmy, and she just had to wait for Eden to decide. She tucked a lock of caramel colored hair behind her ear and looked away as she tried to gather herself, telling herself she could let herself feel the guilt later when she got home. 

“Um... Well, I’ve mostly just spent the last couple of weeks moving and packing and getting ready to come back to work here, so...” Sidney trailed off, realizing that’s what she’d already said. She looked at Eden and instantly just dropped the wall she’d put up. “And I went to rehab,” she blurted, her eyes wide with vulnerability.

“dunno what they’re called.” more like logan never bothered to learn but hey, she didn’t need to know that. it’s not like he needed to, anyways, so why did it matter? his lips turn into a frown when she mentions the medial ward. “shit,” he knew he was LOST but that bad? get it together, kid. “i mean, i guess i am. i dunno what they classify me as. sounds ‘bout right.”

She didn’t want to be nosy, though she was sure she would find out eventually which ward he was in. Sidney cleared her throat and smiled. “Um, could I interest you in going to the cafeteria to have some tea? I was about to go myself, but I’d love to continue our chat if you’d like. There’s no pressure, of course, I just thought you might be tired of just standing in my doorway.”

   The knocking upon his door disturbed Felix from a midday rest he’d been in detrimental need of. Rolling over in his bed, the redhead squeezed his eyes shut and let a groan fall from his lips. After a few moments of continuing to lie there, and the voice now piercing his silence, the arsonist stood from his bed and disinterestedly opened the door to her. “Can we do this another time, doc?”

Sidney blinked at the redhead and her eyebrows knit together in confusion. “Um... W-we were sup-posed to meet yesterday... I-I moved you to t-today, since you didn’t sh-show up.” She took a deep breath to reorient herself, trying to calm her nerves. “I would appreciate it if you came with me now, b-but... but I have an opening later today at four if you promise to comply then.”

He smiled lightly as the doctor reassured him. “Thanks…” When the door was opened more, Elliot took that as his cue to leave the room. He gave a quick nod before wheeling himself out the door. “So..—You’re last name’s Seuss?” He asked, trying to suppress the amused grin that was forming on his lips. “Like Doctor Seuss?” 

Sidney slowly followed Elliot down the hall, hesitant to ask if he’d like her to push him. His amusement directed at her name broke the ice, though, and a smile pushed its way onto her own face. “Um... Yes, it is Dr. Seuss. There’s no relation, though. Not that I know of, anyway.” She chuckled softly, looking down the hallway. They crossed the main part of the institute, entering into the eastern branch of offices. “How are you settling in?” she asked the boy.

logan wasn’t sure if she was being totally serious or if she was trying to pull one over on him. it seemed like it was the latter, but then again, she was a doctor. were they allowed to do that. “interestin’.” a shrug and he hesitates for a few beats before shaking her hand, quickly putting it back at his side afterwards. “so are you like a therapy doctor or what?”

Sidney tilted her head. “A therapy doctor? Like a psychiatrist? No, I-I’m... I’m a medical doctor.” She took a few steps back into her office and gestured down the hall. “This is the medical ward... So there are exam rooms, and the infirmary at the end of the hall. Are you... in the psychiatric ward?”

Lei looked up at the knock on the door. She frowned, sucking in a breath. She hadn’t forgotten, she’d just… been huddled in the corner after some weird flashback-type moment. The voice brought her out and she stood up and trailed to the door, opening it. “Sorry…” She looked up. “I, uh. I forgot.”

Sidney took a step back as the door opened to reveal a petite, dark haired girl. “Oh, um, hi... It’s no problem,” she said with a soft smile. “If you could come to my office now, that would be great. I just need to go over some things and maybe you could discuss with me how things are going for you so far, and if there’s any questions you might have about your treatment plan.”

Elliot was reading when he heard the knock on his door. The sudden noise caused him to flinch and quickly look behind him. “Oh… I-I’m sorry, I didn’t… I forgot.” He pushed one wheel forward so he turned around in his wheelchair to face the doctor. “I… I didn’t mean to skip. I really did forget.” 

Sidney peeked her head into the room, finding herself looking down a bit to face the young boy. “Hello, Elliot?” She glanced at his file once more. “It’s really quite alright, I just thought I would come and make sure everything was alright. Things do take a little bit to adjust to, I can understand that,” she said kindly. She opened the door a bit wider for Elliot, gesturing for him to move into the hallway. “If you’re ready, we can head to my office now, if that’s okay with you.”

Sidney knocked on the patient’s door. “Ahem... This is Dr. Seuss, you’re assigned doctor. I’m here just to remind you that you’ve been scheduled to see me at this time...” She looked at her watch. “About seven minutes ago now, actually.”

There it was. The voice that connected the dots that were forming inside his head. Sidney Seuss, a doctor that had left a couple of months ago. Was she there when Brielle was going to hell without doctor Holmes? Was she there to help when the riot team came crashing in? He was pretty sure she was. But he might as well been very wrong..! “Y-Yeah~” He said with a small smile. “Doctor Sidney Seuss right? I’m not the best with names but I’m pretty sure..!”

On her invitation he walked into her office. Grabbing the pile of books she just pushed toward him. He had riffled through some of Sebastians’ books; even had found a great interest about anything relating psychology or anything about the brain and the many ways it worked in every human. Sitting down on the chair as he looked at the woman putting away the books a question came up in his head. A second of debating within himself if he would ask it he eventually did. “Why did you leave Brielle?” It was a silly question. One built out of pure curiosity, one he didn’t even expect her to answer honestly since he had no business knowing it.

Sidney smiled. “Yeah! You got it, that’s me,” she said, nodding. The doctor switched a few books around, putting a few books of one subject on the shelf below, then placing them in alphabetical order by authors’ last names. It was nice to put them back in order again; she hadn’t done that last time when she’d moved to New York, and she couldn’t help feeling a sense that perhaps things wouldn’t fall apart as much as they had if she put other things in her life in better order. It seemed silly, but a clear space did tend to attribute to a clearer mind.

She stopped organizing her books and turned away from the shelf, looking in Charlie’s direction when he asked the question. Sidney sighed and shrugged at first, but she did think about his question. She bit her lip and opened her mouth, preparing to say something, though it was still perhaps a dozen or so seconds before words came out. “Um... I left because... Well, things were changing around here, and it was hard for me... Hard for me to stay focused on work. Some space helped, and... A bit of time to work on myself didn’t hurt either, in all honesty.”

Jordyn had been rushing around like crazy the last few hours, her whole day had been filled with business. “Thank you Liz!” She exclaimed grabbing her tablet from the nurses hand and turning around quickly, hitting another body as she did so. “My god I’m so so -” Jordyn’s whole body froze in the sight of Sidney, never in a million years had she expected to see this face in her work place again. Eden hadn’t even told her that Sidney was coming back to work. “Wow..” She paused again, unsure on how Sidney would treat her after the whole spill with Kim and hoping to god she didn’t know what was going on between Eden and her. “Sidney..what a surprise!” She hugged her tablet close to her body, awkward was never a feeling Jordyn had present but right about now her awkward metre was through the roof.

Sidney smiled awkwardly, her eyes still wide in utter shock. “J-Jordyn! H-how are you? It’s really been a while,” she stammered breathlessly. The encounter was certainly the last thing Sidney expected; her ex-best friend’s ex-wife was not planned on her agenda of getting resettled at Brielle. Sidney had lost contact with Kim when she left, weekly phone calls had turned into monthly calls that lasted maybe three months at most. She had no idea Jordyn ever planned on returning. Part of Sidney wondered if Jordyn was still in contact with Kim. She wasn’t sure if it was appropriate to ask at this moment, but perhaps it would come up in the future. She pursed her lips, tilting her head as she tried to form a sentence in her head that did seem appropriate to say in the moment. “Um, what brought you to Brielle?”

“I did, I just, um.. clearly misinterpreted it,” Eden chuckled softly, turning back to the brain scans that lit the dim room. There was almost another soft bit of laughter at the situation— how one glass of wine after a long day had somehow made her read a text from Sidney of all people incorrectly. But the blonde held it in, in exchange for a smile on her lips. Should she have been happy to see Sidney? Probably not, especially given… whatever it was that’d been going on between Eden and Jordyn. 

“Right, Hank,” she nodded firmly with each word, eyes narrowing at the scans before shifting back to Sidney. “Have you met him? He’s a real trip. Despite his age, he’s been a patient of mine for a few years, but we only recently found out that he’s got this massive tumor in his frontal lobe,” Eden pointed to the scan as she spoke. Thoguh, it seemed like she was only able to focus on Hank for a minute at a time. “So, did you, like, just come back last night? Or have you been back?”

Sidney took a deep breath and raised her eyebrows, tucking her tablet under her arm before replying. “Well, um, I-I got back... three? Three days ago. I’ve just... I’ve been moving in and getting ready to come back to work.” Sidney had spent the last three days getting settled in, unpacking, grocery shopping, and calling therapists and searching for more AA meetings around town, but maybe it wasn’t quite time yet to lay all of that on her ex-wife.

 She smiled nervously for a second and then took her tablet back out shakily. She unlocked it and glanced at the chart once more, but immediately forgot what she was doing with it. The doctor looked up at Eden again and smiled again. “Um, h-how have you been? How’s... How’s Emmy?”
