I've been a die-hard Snape stan (and Snily stan, pls don't shoot me) for over a decade but have been out of the loop for various reasons and never had a dedicated blog for it until now. I've followed a few blogs who were my mutuals on my main and/or who followed my IG account from yeeears ago, but I'm trying to find more people. Don't hesitate to reach out and chat; it is very much welcome. Or, just reblog this if you are Snape or Snily friendly! I really want to engage with you guys. Anyways. It’s actually really funny how Harry was so gagged at Snape disarming Lockhart in the dueling class that it fundamentally changed his life. Expelliarmus is his #1 go to spell in fights and he used it against Voldemort twice and it literally ended up killing him.

Huh! This description of the young spy’s composure, though of course filtered through Trelawney’s perspective, isn’t very far removed from how he is described in his younger teen years (sputtering, protesting, becoming incoherent when emotional — far from socially deft). It’s markedly different from how we see him operating during the course of the HP timeline; intimidating Quirrell in Philosopher’s Stone, talking his way out of a death sentence in Goblet of Fire, and having the time of his life running circles around Bellatrix in Half-Blood Prince. I’m certainly not the first to note that at some point, Snape had to put quite bit of effort into this transformation. I had always envisioned a 90s-movie makeover/training montage during years 6/7 and into his first years of service with the Death Eaters in which he cultivates a more aristocratic and confident facade, learns skills like Occlumency, and develops the social aptitude which seemed to elude him as a younger teen; I always had a hard time imagining Snape trying to establish credibility with the Death Eaters without quite a bit of work on his end to conform.

But this description from Trelawney has made me consider that Snape might have picked up a lot of these skills later than I originally thought — towards the end of the war and into his first years as a professor. Interesting possibility. While I’d always considered his sink-or-swim brand of instruction to be borne of his own brilliance and lack of a safety net while he was in school, this could add some more color as to why his instruction (particularly of Occlumency) is so focused on self-preservation; perhaps learning the skill quickly was literally life or death for him once he defected and began working as a double agent for the Order.

Of course, it could be that he did indeed develop these skills before or shortly upon joining the Death Eaters, but Dumbledore’s presence has a way of making Snape’s hard work evaporate. After all, Dumbledore — and his trust — have the ability to get under Snape’s skin even years later when he’s fully accustomed to his role as a spy...

Anyway, I’d love to hear folks’ thoughts about this description of not-yet-defected Death Eater Snape and how (if at all) it might impact your view of him!

Headcanon: Snape drove cars for the Ministry to make ends meet before becoming a full Professor (because it's one of the few jobs where the customer does not want to fucking talk to you) and maintains his Muggle driver's license

notice he gets increasingly pissed off but is standing a little straighter every time 💚

Snape is the fakest idgafer ever. He’s all like “I hate these moronic children so much I wish they would all go away” but then one (1) student even HINTS at being in danger and he’s all over it. “Is he bothering you queen” final boss but he’s doing it for entire school of children who live in a highly dangerous castle. He can appear places just as fast as filch and he will use this power to save all the idiots he teaches from imminent death. He cares about his students so much and he makes it so obvious

What if the professors and students have an unspoken rule that if you run into each other in the kitchens at night, it’s a neutral zone. If you get caught out of bed on the way there, or on the way back, you’re in trouble. But if a student and a teacher are both in the kitchens for a midnight snack, you pretend you don’t see each other and you never talk about it.

Like if you went to the kitchens at midnight and saw Snape housing beans on toast, no you didn’t. Screw it im drawing this
