here is a little piece of illustration for Dragon Age zine
I want you to remember:
The fascists hate you too and they just will pretend otherwise until after they've killed the rest of us, before they turn on you.
Thanks to whoever tried, but I knew they'd never allow it.
Let's do it the old fashioned way. Spread it far and wide.
It's amazing how much of a non-entity Lucanis becomes if you don't save Treviso. You get cut off from his romance, there's no choice during his companion quest (for me it just automatically threw Illario in prison and I never saw or heard from him again, not even from Lucanis), and the whole thing with Spite - y'know, the thing his whole character arc revolves around - is "resolved" with one line of "oh btw I'm gonna split from Spite after this" and that's it, you can't ask him about it and Spite doesn't do anything for the rest of the game. This is the game's first major decision btw. Imagine if siding with the mages in Inquisition cut off the romance and story arcs for Iron Bull, Cassandra, Sera, Vivienne and Cullen? Your first major decision in a game that's supposedly full of them (if the devs weren't a bunch of liars) turns a major companion into a dead weight! 10/10 game design right there!
"people saying veilguard doesn't feel like a dragon age game are just whining because the choices don't matter, they didn't matter in previous games so grow up" actually people are saying veilguard doesn't feel like a dragon age game because rook is doing snow angels in the blight. actually people are saying veilguard doesn't feel like a dragon age game because characters no longer speak like they're from a fantasy game and instead say things like "full stop" which is MODERN SLANG. people are saying veilguard doesn't feel like a dragon age game because it doesn't. thanks
one of the weakest parts about dragon age inquisition (that veilguard worsens in hindsight) is that either none of the decisions you make matter or...they're there to set up the next game.
what happens if you ally/exile the wardens? find out in the next game!
how does drinking from the well affect the inquisitor/morrigan? find out in the next game!
how will your chosen divine reshape the chantry? find out next time on dragon ball z!
well then what am i playing this game for then? outside of the few epilogue slides what did it all matter? and then the next game came out and...
"How does it feel?" I say to John Epler, sadly staring at more cursed quotes he dropped quicker than the DA Keep. "Are you blissfully unaware? Or deep inside, is some part of you banging on the wall, screaming?"
"Lol cool line, did you just make that up?" He says, pulling out his phone to tweet that actually Loghain was a trapeeze artist in his free time and the only true lore being carried into the next came is that everyone remembers the Viscount of Kirkwall as being a total hottie.
I think the issue with them saying they wanted to not have any throw away lines about your choices in DAI, DA2 and DAO but just focus on major things is like...
They absolutely should have a button that is Bioware Canon or something so you don't have to think about them if you don't want to.
But throw away lines add a lot to my experience actually. Seeing Connor there in DAI when my warden saved him. Having the letters from the warden that mention their LI popping up. Having Hawke mention which sibling is alive. Having Leliana mention Zevran if you become an assassin. Having Varric talk about Anders differently if he's alive or dead.
Because the thing is I GET that they can't make every little decision matter. I understand that. So throw away lines to give colour to the world you've been playing in actually is a good way around this! It makes players go !!! Without alienating new players or requiring them to write a shit ton of different script and whole ass game to account for a decision that only 15% of players made.
I don't think it should be either/or is what I'm saying.

Not Jace pointing out something Team Black delusionally refuses to acknowledge, how Rhaenyra potentially doomed her first three kids by having 2 legitimate silver haired ones with none other than the Rogue Prince himself. Does she really think Daemon "I'd rather have my kids be eaten by a dragon than bow to a Targaryen half blood king" will just give his blessings to Jacaerys and let his kids be his cupbearers? Lmao Rhaenyra is just lucky they all died before her stupidity could cause a second succession crisis and make her an even more embarrassing historical character.

“I want to sneak into king’s landing to talk to Alicent” has the same stupid vibe as “we need to kidnap an ice zombie to show Cersei”
I've seen several cases where people are like "what happens if we meet aliens, and then they see Independence Day or War of the Worlds?"
But nobody seems to think about what happens when the aliens see Star Trek.
The aliens are gonna see these shows made by a bunch of humans but they put putty on some of the humans to make them look like what we think aliens might look like, and we told stories about how those aliens would be our friends and we'd explore the universe with them and find more aliens and try to be friends with them too!
Yeah sometimes they'd be mean and we'd fight but we'd always try to avoid it and even if we fought we'd try to be friends later.
We basically created 900 episodes of a child's drawing of a stick figure of a human and a stick figure of a grey alien holding hands and "best friends" written in crayon.
This shit was deeply unserious and yall are deeply unserious people if it gagged yall 😭 this is some CW ass writing.
