when you first met reese wilkerson, he pushed you off your bike. you scraped up your knees, and you ran home to your mom with tears running down your eyes. your mom and lois talked it out—after lois gave reese a scolding of course—and you two had been friends ever since.
reese still teased you and socked you every now and then. it didn’t hurt, he was always gentle with his punches like he was playing punch buggy, but it still confused you. you told yourself it was just part of being friends with the boy.
that all changed when you were sixteen.
reese was acting weirder than usual, so of course you decided to confront him about it. he was grounded, not allowed to leave his room, but lois let you into the house anyway. she loved you to pieces and truly thought you were a good influence on her son.
you knocked softly on reese’s door.
“can i come in?” you asked. you heard reese roll out of bed, his footsteps heavy on the ground as he got closer to the door. when he opened it, you noticed the way he looked at you, like you were his entire world.
his brown hair was in its usual spikey style, and his hazel eyes studied you intently. reese was cute, you always thought so, but you pushed your feelings deep down.
you always thought it was just because he was your friend, nothing more.
you sat on dewey and malcolm’s bed and reese sat on his own. you awkwardly played with your hands as you tried to find the words to say.
“did my mom let you in?” reese asked, breaking the tense silence. you nodded.
“yeah, she did. i thought you were grounded,” you responded. he laughed gently.
“i am, i don’t know why she has such a soft spot for you,” he said. you laughed with him, the nervousness already fading away. you continued talking with reese, mainly about mundane things.
you seemed to dance around what you really wanted to say, but you finally found the courage to ask just as dewey walked into the room.
“reese, i wanted to ask,” you said, avoiding his gaze. dewey watched on quietly, not entirely realizing what he walked in on. “why have you been treating me differently?”
“i haven’t? what are you talking about,” reese responded. you sighed.
“you’ve been avoiding me at school. i miss my best friend,” you explained. before reese could give a sorry excuse, dewey chimed in.
“it’s probably because he’s in love with you. he has been for years now.”
you both whipped your heads towards the younger boy. your cheeks felt warm at the second-hand confession, and you glanced at reese from the corner of your eye. his cheeks were as red as could be.
you saw something that could only be described as a mixture of embarrassment and anger flickering in his eyes.
“dewey, i swear to god,” reese warned, getting up from the bed and chasing dewey out of the room. you heard the front door slam as lois called after the boys. you ran towards the entrance just as dewey ran back into the house.
he looked terrified.
“you have to do something, he’s gonna kill me,” dewey exclaimed, pulling on your sleeve. you went outside, expecting to be met with the ire of reese. instead, he was sat at the curb. you sat next to him.
“he’s lying,” reese mumbled, referring to what dewey said earlier. you scooted closer to him, close enough that your bodies were touching.
reese didn’t move away. he avoided your gaze, face red as a beet as he stared firmly at the ground at some bugs like they were the most interesting thing in the world. you nudged your knee gently against his.
“it’s okay if he’s not. i think i might be in love with you too,” you confessed. you anxiously played with the gravel near the curb as you felt reese focus his attention on you.
“but if he is lying, then forget i even said anything. i don’t want to make things awkward and—” you started to continue, but reese cut you off by placing a soft kiss on your cheek. you turned to face him, meeting his stare for the first time since dewey’s words.
“i’m sorry, you just looked so beautiful. and he wasn’t lying,” reese admitted. you leaned in quickly, meeting his lips with your own. he didn’t kiss back at first, and you were horrified.
but, he started to relax and move his lips against yours, capturing you in a deeper kiss. you felt him smile against your lips. when you pulled away, you still remained close with your foreheads touching and noses softly rubbing against each other.
“does this mean we’re dating now?” reese asked quietly. you let out a breathy laugh.
“sure, if that’s what you want,” you answered. reese smiled before leaning in again, placing quick pecks on your lips.
lois and dewey watched on from the window. dewey was still visibly shaken from the fear reese instilled just moments before.
he couldn’t believe his eyes—how was his brother, the boy who was just threatening to put his head on a stick, now acting all sweet with the girl from down the street?
“your father owes me twenty bucks,” lois commented, referring to a deal she had made with hal. they had bet on how long it would take for you two to realize your feelings for each other, with lois guessing before you both graduated.
“i don’t get it. that cannot be the same reese,” dewey replied, watching the way reese melted under your touch. lois shrugged.
“a nice girl can make a boy do crazy things,” she said, thinking back on her own relationship with hal. she ruffled dewey’s hair before placing a hand on his shoulder.
“c’mon, let’s give them some privacy. i’ll deal with reese later,” she said, assuring dewey that reese would be punished for chasing him and physically threatening him.
outside, you and reese were in your own little world. lois continued watching for a moment, smiling to herself and thanking whatever god blessed reese with a girl as sweet as you before walking away from the window.
