a scene that i think about all the time is when in the jurassic park movie, in the helicopter landing scene, Alan is faced with the inability to buckle up properly; he overcomes the perceived error on Hammond's part by adapting his own practical means of security. This foreshadows, to me, when the park goes down (a product of Hammond's oversight and extreme dependence on mechanical labor) that Alan and the others have to find practical ways to survive the human made problems of failing systems. its a small scene, but it feels like it shows not only Alans poor relationship with modern equipment, but his ability to problem solve around them.

Embarrassingly, he practically fell into the man’s car. It was a nice car, if older. Well kept, not an ounce of trash, but RJ suspected it wasn’t fully up to date. He considered suggesting someone should look it over, hell, with how befuddled he was he was close to offering to look at it himself. He didn’t like the sounds it made, but maybe he was overanalysing it because it was all he could bear to think about. A foot and a half away Ian sat at ten and two, watching the road. He drove cautiously, and RJ took the tentative motion to turn on the radio. Ian glanced at his hand and said nothing, and really he felt like a child. He fiddled with the turn knob until it was something pleasant enough, lazy rock blended into static. He settled himself back in his seat and spared a glance at the driver. Ian’s hair was shorter than it used to be, and speckled in greys here and there. His hands were stiff and firm, and he seemed somehow sturdier now at whatever age he was than he was at twenty-two. Then again he was a swimmer in college and it kept him skinny. Now he was something that RJ hadn’t asked about yet. He didn’t ask during the ride, or the walk up to the stairs, or the elevator ride to his apartment. He didn’t ask when he stared into his deep features while the man poured them each a drink in his kitchen. It was purply. The rest of the apartment was dark, but it was clearly clean and terribly modern. He watched the liquid pour, and parted very dry lips to speak. He felt so familiar that vulnerability engulfed him before he could really shut up.

“Why did you bring me back, Ian?”

The man paused, mouth twitching. “Well, I… I saw you for the first time in a very long time. That’s good enough, isn’t it?”
