Today I learn on Bluesky that apparently the new Avatar movie used FUCKING CHAT-GPT as a source for what East Asian People look like.
How to kill any good will your movie had in three fucking words. "According to ChatGPT..."
EDIT: Didn't expect this post to blow up so I'm just going to lay down the facts now that I've woken up.
TL;DR: It's unclear whether the ChatGPT citation was added by whoever was outsourced to make the art book, or if ChatGPT was actually used during the cultural research of the film.

1: These images were taken during a Comic Con panel, and are presumably from an art-book for the Avatar movie. The fact that the artbook uses ChatGPT as a source for what "South East Asian cultures look like" is not made up or false information.

I dont know if this is brazen or it has just become so normalized that people who use the stuff don't see it anymore but the text that opens
2: Someone who worked on the film's artwork/animation says everyone they worked with was against AI, so I'm willing to take her word that gen AI wasn't used directly for the film's artwork/animation. That's not what the image from the art book suggested, as it instead seemed to imply ChatGPT was used to research what South East Asian people looked like, instead of just consulting with actual South East Asian people.
3: The art-book itself is outsourced to someone not involved in the film, so maybe they slipped in the ChatGPT comment. It could also just be an actual quote from the design/research stage. The main thing is just there's a lot of unknowns right now.

I hope there's a statement regarding what's actually going on here, as using ChatGPT as a cultural sensitivity reader is a really fucking bad idea. However, it may not have actually been used for the research and was just inserted by whoever made the artbook.

my only hope is that if we make enough noise this time, israel won't dare bomb it with such prominent international figures on board, from fear of making them martyrs and turning the rest of the world against them.

the only power we have is political and economic pressure at this point. ethics are out of the picture when it comes to the israeli government. so we need to make it clear that bombing this ship would be a declaration of war against europe.
