Finished Meena Fleur! As mentioned previously on the Bella Parker post, I'm trying to get back into face ups and wanted to practice on these WIPs I started three years ago. Bella Parker was mostly done, so I didn't get much practice in, but Meena was mostly unfinished and oof. So much of it is getting reacquainted with supplies and materials.

Anyway, this doll has caused me some grief since I first bought her, but I'll talk about it a bit more in a different post. For now, hooray! That's two doll faces! Now on to actual work!

growing up as an imaginative single child, I loved to play with Barbies. I loved creating elaborate drama-filled storylines for them and I could keep at it for hours. there was one problem. I had like 15 thrift store Barbies and no Kens. I only had one Barbie-sized male doll and it was a collectible Elvis Presley doll and he was my favorite doll. I always did the Elvis voice when I was playing him but he had no relation to Elvis Presley otherwise. anyway, he had some crazy days. trapped on a scary planet where he is the only man in the world and half of the women there hate him. in a massive car accident and stranded in the woods with a girlfriend who had broken her foot and a crazy ex girlfriend who had stalked them there. kidnapped by Athena (one of my Barbie sized dolls was Athena, like, the goddess) and held captive by her while trying to go home to his 7 situationships. all of this happening to a guy who looks and sounds exactly like Elvis but is otherwise the quintessential everyman.

So. I need to do some face ups, but it's been awhile. I thought I could jump straight back in, but haha, nope! That did not go well. I decided it was best to practice on something else to get back in the swing of things. I found these two Rainbow High heads I had started back some years ago and hoped for the best.

Tbf, I didn't do too much to this Bella repaint wise since she was mostly done already. I did have to go over the eye lash lines and woo boy. Maybe I should practice with calligraphy instead XD I also screwed up the paint when reinserting the eyes.

(man everything looks so chunky here) I repainted the eyeliner and scraped off the excess with a toothpick. It's still noticeable in person, but eh. Nothing's ever perfect.

I wasn't sure I was going to like her outcome and considered putting her up for sale, but I think I'm happy with her now. Finally!

Years ago when Bella Parker first came out I was smitten with her promo photos because I loved the soft pink and faux Channel suit. A friend helped me get her and I was so happy! But as time went on I started to feel.. underwhelmed? Something wasn't clicking for me (which is something I've felt with most RH despite their better quality and design compared to other dolls at the time).

One day, I decided to do something drastic to the pale pink Bella. If I went full goth then I'd have to make her a whole new look and I wasn't really up for that either. So she was stuck in limbo. But then after some RH commissions I decided to take the leap and repaint my own. That fire lasted all for one month before being stored away for years, haha.

But this was fun. And while I didn't do too much repaint wise, it was still nice to remember how to do doll things again and I really do like how she came out. She looks like a little rebellious nepo baby that stirs shit at Thanksgiving dinner. XD

it's not quite spring yet where i live, but it's getting there. hence i made some seasonal lil buds. they're about 12cm tall, the head sprout included, so very tiny very precious.

I was thinking about the doll clothes I've sewn because of the scans of Japanese doll publications on the Internet Archive

The kimonos were made with the actual patterns in DollyDolly 24, with additional ideas from Doll Coordinate Recipe Making Kimono and DollyBird 4

Everything else I've made because of the Japanese doll publications, I made with my own patterns as the base. However! They are things I probably never would have made if not for the inspiration of seeing the projects in the publications to begin with

DollyBird 1 has a pattern for making a copy of the vintage Francie outfit Tenterrific

My version is shorter because I didn't have enough of that fabric, which I was determined to use, to make it the full length

This romper was also inspired by a project in DollyBird 1

Doll Coordinate Recipe vol 3 gave me this

This was a case where seeing the pattern/assembly instructions helped, because the skirt is gathered to a high yoke, which just isn't visible in the original photo...or, really, in mine...

The headband on the cover of DollyBird 15 inspired me to use up some bits and pieces I had been hanging on to for no real reason

And, most recently, I combined design elements of two dresses from Doll Coordinate Recipe vol 8

For the record: I'm not using my own patterns out of stubbornness, or any sense of superiority, but because it's just easier for me than printing the patterns from the magazines, and, also, because I can make any design for any size doll, instead if being limited to the sizes given. I printed the kimono patterns because I never trusted my own attempts to make kimono in the past, and felt better about using an actual Japanese doll pattern source.
