Looking for DC oomfs: I'm rlly new to reading DC comics, I've been mainly reading Catwoman (2001) and Birds of Prey (1998). I like drawing fan art, also I want more reading recs for Selina and Barbara ᓚᘏᗢ
And I really like her too! Especially right now, I'm reading Birds of Prey (1998) and I'm on issue 76, she's grown a lot on me! I felt "eh" about the melodrama in her initial introduction in this run, I felt like there was too much emphasis on her sleeping with Dick as the friction.
She's such a cool character, she's got a cool and mysterious aura to her, they could have put the emphasis of the hesitation of letting her join the group more about her being a "wild card" but no they had to have that 2000s flavor of misogyny and referring to her as a "hussy".
But now I'm at the part where she's FINALLY a proper member of the group and I can enjoy her and her dynamic with Dinah and Barbara! And she's everything I want in a character: She's cool, I find her dry sense of humor funny, I am a sucker for a character that cares about children (Love that she's an English teacher), and I love a lapsed catholic.

I got into Helena Wayne because I love BatCat. I find it endearing when super heroes have daughters. And her name being Helena, meaning light or bright... Like she's the light of Bruce and Selina's world, or the light shining in the darkness... it makes me so emotional, they love their little girl so much.
I've read Earths' Finest (2012) and the accompanying Huntress mini that serves as a pre squeal to it. In that respect, I feel like I am a bit of a LARP when it comes to Helena Wayne because I've read exclusively her appearances from the New 52 era. I need to read her Earth 2 stuff from the 70s to fully grasp her character.
From what I've read in terms of fan opinion between New 52 era Helena Wayne and her original characterization: New 52 is melancholic in comparison to her OG character... But it's like, yeah she would be... The poor girl lost her mother, then her whole world...
Anyhoo, I really locked in reading Earths' Finest (2012) because of how extremely gay it is. Yes, it's probably just the male writer trying to imagine tight knit, ride or die, friendship between two women but GOD is it homoerotic as hell... The scene of Helena licking the frosting off that damn cupcake while watching Kara change into front of her had me YELLING.
It was so gay that for one of my game design classes in univeristy recently, I made a whole Helstarr Visual Novel as a demo in Unity game engine! The art was not what I wanted it to be, the professor was more interested in the code, so I spent majority of my time more on creating a baseline dialogue manager. And yes, this assignment got an A.

Hot take: I think the Jason Todd being the biggest eater/ foodie of the bat family is over blown. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Fatson Todd, my friends and I call my giant 5 TB external hard drive that I store all my game assets in is called Fatson Todd, BUT that's just based off some panels of him eating burgers.
I believe the REAL food fiend of the family is Helena Wayne, at least the New 52 version of her. When my girl isn't FIGHTING, she's rewarding herself for facing the horrors by eating a sweet treat. She's so damn adorable:

When does Savant like… stop showing up? It really feels like that one meme from TikTok of the guy “Hey when you say the girls and the gays, can you include me too?” But instead of it being funny it’s just harassment.
The time wasted on him could have been spent on Helena or Dinah, or this is part of a character building moment for Barbara
People who makes Babs the voice of reason/the one who shakes her head at batboy shenanigans do not understand. That woman has whimsy, she had it as Batgirl and she still has it as Oracle. Let her have fun, okay.

I really want to finish the Catwoman run from 2001, but I sort of dropped it after issue 50 because of the reveal that Selina was basically programmed to turn to good instead of it being of her own freewill.
It really put a sour taste in my mouth and it destroys the characterization and story that Ed Brubaker wrote.
I think if I had a time machine, I would go back and tell myself to just stop reading the run after issue 37. Issue 37 had a solid ending too, with Selina’s found family celebrating her birthday.
For the sake of being a completionist, I’m going to try and finish the run, but oh my god it’s going to be a slog to get through.
