Kozue is fr the most underrated rgu chracter imo. She's only in like, 4 episodes, but she steals the show every second she's onscreen.

She's 13. She's bisexual. She has gifted kid burnout. She rescues baby birds and tries to kill creepy teachers. She kissed a girl in a moving car. She previously tried to kill that same girl. She has parallels with like every other character in the show. No one else is doing it like her. Legendary. Iconic even. I like to think that, post-canon, she pulled the good old staircase trick one last time on Akio before leaving. Its what she deserves.

It is interesting that kozue is the only black rose duelist with butterflies/cabbage moths fluttering around her. I wonder if they couldn’t explore touga’s backstory then maybe they gave the butterflies/moths imagery to episode fifteen. Kozue and touga parallel each other because they are both promiscuous, implied csa victims with a complicated relationship with their sibling. And they would both end up abusing their sibling to continue this fucked cycle

I actually think the lack of race politics is probably the weakest factor in rgu (as well as the fandom) bc like. the dynamics of patriarchy are in fact inextricable from the logic of colonialism in many ways? and so it makes me feel crazy that everyone in ohtori is always like “let’s kill the one brown girl we know with knives for no reason” and then nary a single fan is like “this is surely not motivated by any sort of visual signifier of alterity that she may be assigned by a racializing gaze” and in fact some of them are even like “everyone who wants to kill her is right for that probably bc she’s evil”

If you do not live in the US or have a VPN then you can check out this fansub by @haru-dipthong and @dontbe-lasanya along with all their notes here. The fansub can also be found here on the Internet Archive. A remuxed version of RGU can also be found here though it needs to be downloaded. Apparently there has been issues with the subtitles on this one but it mostly works. RGU contains a lot of fla$hing l!ghts that can make viewing dangerous for people with photosensitivity issues. The UTENA NO FL@$H!NG LIGHTS project was ultimately abandoned but you can still view up to episode 8 on the link displayed previously. They are also on the Internet Archive here.
