Would anyone be able to beta read for my Captain Jack Sparrow (Potc) fan fic? Or just offer advice in general!

It’s Character x OC, I have the whole franchise planned out plot wise, and am super chuffed to get to writing! The first draft for the first chapter is done, and I’m midway through a draft for the second chapter!! Also I will forewarn I am a wattpad publisher, so if it’s not your cup of tea, you can just scroll on by. I just need help with accuracy in regards to these things :

- Historically. If there’s anything I need to be aware of in that time period. I believe it’s set during the 1700s, couldn’t say exactly when off the top of my head.

- Geographically. Describing locations and accurate travel from place to place and what not. Also what the places were referred to back then, for example I’m pretty sure that Singapore wasn’t actually recognised as Singapore by then.

- The lingo from back then.

- Politically. Obviously and unfortunately, there was a lot of colonisation and war in the 1700s. Lots of empires, so if there’s anything I need to know about that, it would be greatly appreciated if somebody could fill me in!

- Plot wise. I want to be almost as accurate as possible to most aspects of the movies, apart from the odd thing I’ll pick out for the sake of my own morals and opinions and also what works my own plot. If there’s anything unsaid or not necessarily made obvious in the movies I’d love people’s meta on it so I can build on all of the characters arcs etc!!

- And finally, with the actual whole literature part of it. How can I improve, what makes it more enjoyable for not only readers but myself? However please be gentle with me, I’m a sensitive soul lmao😭 But I’ll try and take any and all criticism on the chin to the best of my abilities.

I would do this research myself but I refuse to use google/safari excessively because of its AI feature, and I also thought it would be a good opportunity to connect with other people in the fandom space!

Like I said, I’m very excited about this because I put so much thought and time into building my own little world to attach to this phenomenal franchise. I’ve watched this series my entire life, with somebody who was very important to me. I want to do it justice, so please, any advice is wanted (probably needed too lol).

Also, just to be clear, I do not like Johnny Depp in any capacity. Hope the mf rots.

Hack for people who struggle to keep up with personal hygiene :

Brush your teeth WHILST you’re either in the shower or on the toilet, or whilst you’re doing anything at all really but these two specifically help me.

Two birds with one stone.

In the shower particularly it’s less of a sensory nightmare when you get it on your hands/around your mouth/on the handle of the brush since you can wash it away almost immediately. It puts your teeth routine into your shower routine, meaning you have one less routine to process.

Going to the toilet is something a lot of people do frequently, and grabbing my tooth brush before I sit down at night/in the morning is sometimes the only thing that makes me do it, otherwise I’ll stare at my toothbrush as I’m washing my hands and be like ‘meh’ and just go back to my room.

Idk it might not work for everyone, but personally the whole multitasking, getting things over with, is REALLY working for me. I can’t explain it. It’s the only way I clean my teeth sometimes.

i'm just imagining, for a while after the Queen's Ball, the Bridgertons keep finding Sophie doing jobs around the house. And at first they try and stop her, but then they realise that it's hard for her to break from her routine straight away.

So maybe they start to join her. Colin and Gregory join her when she's in the kitchens (with a very wary Mrs Wilson watching over them) and attempt to help her cook (they mainly just eat the food).

When Sophie's mending or sewing clothes, Hyacinth and Francesca keep her company. Francesca watches how she sews, and after a while, lends a hand whilst Hyacinth gives her opinion on fabric types and colours.

If she's in the garden, Eloise will often accompany her, either to read aloud from a book they both enjoy or to learn about the different plants they have. When he's visiting from Aubrey House, Anthony will make an appearance in the gardens whenever Sophie is there. The conversation is stilted at first, and the lengthy pauses border on awkward, but after a month or two, they start to find common interests.

Violet does keep Sophie company when she can. However, most of the time, when she (or Mrs Wilson) notices Sophie working, she'll give her children a little nudge to make sure that Sophie isn't by herself.

What does everybody think about SA plot lines in (particularly romance) fan fiction?

I’ve always thought that they’re usually unnecessary and people use them for a weak shock value under the guise of ‘spreading awareness for victims’ when usually it isn’t really that, or at least doesn’t feel like it. I especially think writing them in depth/explicitly is a huge issue.

But aside from that it always sort of feels like people just throw in to maximise their characters trauma, with little care or understanding of the experience?? Like it’s often just something that happens in explicit detail, readers are horrified and the author is glorified for being ‘evil’, and then they only return to the subject occasionally when it serves as a good plot device in the future. Never feels like there’s any gravity behind it.

Maybe I’m the only one who thinks it can be strange at times, specifically in romance fics; other times it can be done with care and really well, but it’s usually the former I am finding. This is by no means an act of policing what people write, I’m just curious of what others think, because it always irked me but maybe I am justt sensitive.

I think it’s a complex matter especially when you consider societies obsession with moral purity and avoidance of things being controversial, with how fiction can bleed into reality sometimes etc, but also how fiction can be an entirely separate world and doesn’t always reflect people’s beliefs or desires; I don’t believe either of those ideas to be mutually exclusive.

I don’t know, I always click off usually anyway or scroll by since it’s so easy to just not engage with it if it’s not for you, but I’ve genuinely been thinking about this for months. I hope I don’t sound dumb.

With all that’s going on in the world, many might be thinking, ‘Well, at least it’s not happening to me!’, but I’m sincerely sorry to say, YOU’RE NEXT. First they’re scapegoating and dehumanising immigrants, countries under siege/genocide, and now trans people; it will move on to (and already is moving/has moved onto) women, people of colour, the disabled community, the rest of the queer community, indigenous peoples, the working class, the environment etc. They are trying to pick us off, one at a time.

Just because you haven’t felt it yet, on a personal level, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening and it doesn’t mean you won’t feel it one day. You will feel it, and it will be immense; but, you shouldn’t have to feel it yourself just to start caring.

I feel like people go through the motions of life with the mindset that ‘It won’t happen to me’, but I promise you, it can happen to you. It can happen to anyone. I am sure many of the people who are suffering now also thought similarly.

Don’t live in fear, but don’t ignore others plight in wrongfully thinking you have immunity. Please, start caring more. Practice empathy, connection, and compassion more often. We need love, and the world needs our love, and our attention.
