You cannot whisper the plot of a deeply loved story into a trashy, badly written movie and call it an âadaptation.â This is no adaptation. This is an abomination that I will forever wish stayed in the studio. This movie was not released. It escaped.

As an avid reader of the webnovel and webtoon, this feels like betrayal, and the movie felt like a cash grab. Webnovel fans did NOT read 3000+ pages of amazing story, including setting and character development for it to be blended, squeezed, shredded, and served as a bland disappointment.
I will explain why. I genuinely donât understand the change in plot. I am 100% not convinced thereâs true genuine fans of the webnovel and webtoon who like this adaptation. Thereâs no âgenius changing of the plot to appease a wider audienceâ, or âaction packed scenesâ, nor âamazing acting.â
Firstly, the casting. I do believe Lee Minho, Ahn Hyo Seop are amazing, handsome, and talented actors, however they do not fit the role they play. Clearly, the production had a massive budget for actors, but managed to find not a single one that actually accurately depicted their characters, save Hyunseong.
Over the webnovel, it is repeated and stressed that Joonghuk is the 3rd most handsome person in the entire universe. Not only does Lee Minho not have the same build as him, I feel like his entire part was written wrong.
Joonghyuk is not some emotionless machine that is soulless, like he is portrayed in this movie. Joonghyuk is one of the most complex characters in this series with deep-rooted trauma. This movie not only failed to express that, it condensed Joonghyuk into a sidekick of sorts.
One of favorite characters, reduced to nothing but a handsome scumbag that uses guns. This is my review of Yoo Joonghyuk.
Next, I will move on to Kim Dokja. Kim Dokja means reader. Or it could mean âsingle childâ. All of his life, heâs been lonely. His mother was a criminal, which was not portrayed in this sorry excuse of an adaptation. He suffered domestic abuse since he was a child, and bullying continued to follow him throughout middle school.
One of the scenes that made me want to leave the cinema was when he killed his classmate, Minseob. Firstly, no Minseob was ever mentioned in ORV, the webnovel. The only mention of Minseob was Jung Minseob, who was a renouncer.
Kim Dokja doesnât like the novel. The novel was his life. He made it through middle school, high school, college, and his job telling himself âI am Yoo Joonghyukâ whenever he struggled. I absolutely despise how the novel wasnât even portrayed as a huge important aspect of his life, just a small subplot/flashback every now and then. Let me remind all viewers, THE NOVELâS THE ONLY REASON HE DIDNâT COMMIT SUICIDE.
This repulsive âadaptationâ somehow fails to realize that Dokja isnât a âteamwork makes the dreamworkâ kinda guy. He went around collecting useful characters so he could have the ending HE wants. Heâs cynical, calculating, and occasionally selfish.
Moving on to the absolute butchering of his character. THE LITERALLY TITLE of the book is âOmniscient Readerâs Viewpointâ, which is also the name of the skill HE DIDNâT EVEN GET IN THIS SO CALLED âadaptationâ. Disgusting.
Before I move on to the obvious plot holes in this disgrace of a movie, I will briefly shame the writing of the other characters.
Lee Gilyoung. What was suppose to be a complex character was condensed into a bratty child. Later in the novel, we find out about Lee Gilyoungâs trauma. In the novel, Dokja often thinks of him as a âchild with an adult view of the worldâ. Gilyoungâs intuition was always sharp, and he rarely acted like a kid, which scared KimCom sometimes.
Gilyoung was thankful to Dokja for placing a grasshopper (well, an ant in this case) in his palm, even though he believed that he would hinder the group. He trusted Dokja with his life, and wouldâve traded his in a heartbeat.
This botched âadaptationâ doesnât even began to cover how deeply of a tie the two have. The key moments like Gilyoung trying to fight Joonghyuk to step out the green zone to help Dokja were simply omitted. Another example is the time he asked what Dokja wanted after they cleared all the scenarios, to which Dokja replied, âthe ending of a certain novelâ
Jihye. Lee Jihye. Maritime Admiral. Her story in the TWSA universe began with the trauma of killing her best friend. She was ruthless to others, but blindly obeyed Joonghyuk, her master. A thirty year old was casted to play a teenager. And she uses a RIFLE.
In the brief interaction between Dokja and Jihye, I wanted to close my eyes from how disgusting the scenes are. Originally, in the novel, Dokja had HELPED Jihye come to terms with her actions and making her into the formidable force she was. However, in this shameful adaptation, Dokja simply spelled out her trauma, not at all with the intent of helping.
Hyungseongâs character was actually, and shockingly adapted well here. Somewhat at least. Since the rest of the movie set the bar lower than where Namwoon now lives, I wonât yap about the wrong details in his character.
Now. The Judge. Heewon. I hate to say this, but the movie portrayed her accurately, to the basic sense. They skimmed the character description of Heewon on the ORV Wiki, wrote a script, and called it a day.
Yes they mentioned how she was left to die, although the details about that were completely wrong. Yes they mentioned that she wanted revenge, but they never revealed the other side of Heewon. The side that laughed with KimCom, told stories of how she used to learn Kendo, or the one that connected early stage KimCom together.
In thisâŚthing, she was simply a weapon to be pointed at the enemies.
Since this is getting quite long, and I still have a lot left, I will speed up the rest.
Sangah was suppose to break traditional female role stereotypes, and be a badass. Her supporting constellation is supposedly Ariadne, the lover of Theseus. Her skill was portrayed as a golden thread in the webtoon, as Ariadne provides Theseus with thread to help him navigate a maze to defeat the Minotaur.
This sorry excuse of an adaption seems to have confused Ariadne with Arachne, the spider. And before anyone comes at me and says âtheyâre both Greek myths. And Sangahâs supported by Olympusâ, NUH UH. Athena was the one that cursed Arachne into a spider, I most certainly don't think the two are cozying up in the same nebula all of the sudden. I donât understand how Moonlight Empress became Spiderman. But anyhow, if sheâs a healer, I wonder if Seolhwa is a trad wife.
Now, to our favorite part. The Plot Holes.
Theyâre massive. Gaping. Abyssal (flame dragon). I donât understand why the director felt the need to just remove the capture the flag scenario, or to not run a proper adaptation.
Because letâs put our thinking caps on for one second. I will write the biggest plot holes, and how that is practically unsalvageable for possible sequels. (Please no sequels.)
First. Dokja doesnât have his skills, Omniscient Readerâs Viewpoint, Bookmark, and the Fourth Wall.
Since this is the first I can think of, I will write it here. Heâs going to fail as Hyungseong is going to die due to Heewon. I wonât elaborate. If you donât understand, search it up.
Heâs also going to die during disaster of Floods.
And in the 73rd Demon realm when Asmodeous appeared, Joonghyuk would die without this skill.
If he doesnât have Bookmarks, he shouldâve died on that bridge when he was fighting zombie Namwoon.
If not, heâs going to die when fighting the Disaster of Questions, since our talentless king was not able to learn Way of the Wind.
He will also die during Peace Land because, again, heâs talentless.
Ultimately, the world will cease to exist, as there is no âBookmark Skillâ to bookmark Han Sooyoungâs avatar skill to turn him into the Oldest Dream.
Now, the biggest plot hole. The Fourth Wall. In the Epilogue, we discover the fourth wall was the Dokkaebi King that helped Sooyoung write TWSA. Without TWSA, The world will never exist, as KDJ will never become the Oldest Dream.
Next, both YJH and KDJ will die in the Cinema Dungeon without Fourth Wall.
KDJ will not be able to earn his first story, âThe King of a Kingless worldâ as his mind will not be strong enough.
He cannot kill any outer gods as thereâs no Fourth Wall to eat them.
He canât become Demon King of Salvation because the Fourth Wall was the only reason he survived. SoâŚ
YJH specifically said he doesnât use guns as ammo is hard to find after the apocalypse. The director and writers blatantly ignored that.
Also, one of the plot points in ORV is YJHâs Regression Depression. And he had considered regressing after finding out that AFTER HE REGRESSES, THE WORLDLINE STAYS, WHICH THIS MOVIE ABSOLUTELY IGNORED.
The constellations were basically Easter eggs in this movie, instead of the powerful celestial being they actually are.
Also, without the capture the flag scenario, KDJ wouldâve never encountered HSY. He wouldâve never met Han Donghoon, nor the constellations of the Korean Peninsula.
I heard it was bad, but this actually belongs in the dumpster. I donât feel like anyone in this production cared enough about it to even finish reading the webnovel. If they did, it doesnât show.
The bare minimum of an adaptation is to pay respects to the fans who will 100% show up to support the movie. This sloppy mess threw respect out the window. It feels like a slap in the face to loyal fans.
Imagine being a normal citizen and seeing the last supposed insane killer to have lettuce seaweed hair. Ngl I would giggle a little b4 locking in and realizing thatâs a destroyer of breakfast food serial killer

Taiga: Shoot Me - DAY6 and Bored! - NINGNING (aespa)
Explanation: Honestly, this first choice was solely inspired by that line. You know. This one. Honestly, this fandom has basically admitted that Taiga is downbad for Romeo. Shoot Me is about a toxic relationship where the guy allows the partner to shoot him if it helps them feel better. It's about giving himself up for his partner.
"Yeah, just shoot me, bang, bang, Your bullet, bullet, bullet, I'll take it anytime if this is what you want."
Explanation: Bored! is about a song where the girl doesn't feel much, and basically treats a relationship like a fun fling. Taiga is the type of person to basically forget about MC the next day. He doesn't have much commitment unless it's for lulu and pretty much forgets, and gets bored.
"I could never be your somebody, You could never be my somebody. Yeah, maybe it's on me, I should've said it before, but I tend to get bored."
Romeo: Ice On My Teeth - ATEEZ and Whiplash - aespa
Explanation: Romeo is an important person. How dare you waste his time by suggesting a song that matches him? His time is money; you should pay to even breathe near him. He dresses to the nines; his presence demands respect. Ice On My Teeth is about being on a completely different level than anyone else.
"I'm like a violin, singing it from the top. At the end of the name, there's 'Priority'. Taking a seat first as usual, starting from the main course, slice and eat that diamond cut"
Explanation: Romeo's pretty. He's a face turner with that lethal face card. While many may try to copy, they'll never be him, never have the same attitude, elegance, and poise. Whiplash is a song about the listener being unable to comprehend the singer's aura and giving them whiplash with every move.
"The moment it begins, verdict is in. Opportunity knocks just one time, unforgettable. I found the right light, won't go gentle into the night, etched in my eyes one time, unforgettable."
Ritsu: CASE 143 - Stray Kids and PellĂŠas et MĂŠlisande: VII. La chasse commence
Explanation: Finding the perfect songs for the righteous little guy was so hard, but I scraped up an idea. Ritsu is an innocent little guy. He probably doesn't really understand his feelings at first, and it feels like his heart is about to explode. CASE 143 is about the strange emotion of having a crush and the unexplainable feelings towards someone. 143 means I love you, since I (1 letter) Love (4 letters) You (3 letters).
"A new case, an unforgettable case, I'm falling for your fatal attraction. You, who keeps setting me on fire, are a question with an unknown source, homework that needs to be done."
Explanation: This isn't even a 'song', it's a piece. But this piece kinda feels like what I imagine to be going on in Ritsu's brain when he starts a new case.

Bonus artist: Through my past posts, I think I've mentioned ITZY quite a bit. I've liked ITZY since their debut, and they've gotten me through some pretty tough times. Though they have no idea who I am, it feels comforting and warm whenever I listen to their songs. Their debut, DALLA DALLA, was about how it's okay to be different from others. Their most popular release, WANNABE, is about how it's okay to just want to be you, and how it's okay to ignore voices bringing you down. Most of their songs are cheerful and meaningful, helping the listener love themselves. I would recommend listening to BET ON ME.
