Tired. đȘđȘ
On an intellectual level as a speedster could I compete with you? (The weirdo just needs to hear it from the source)
âNo.â
Who lays awake at 4 am, silently worrying about their existence and how irrelevant they are. Who realises and rolls over, pecking them gently on the forehead and mumbling a tired âhave this crisis in the morning. Snuggle now.â
ââŠWell, I suppose. I have a girlfriend. Andromeda.â
That was acceptable to state, right? It hurt him to say, though - to tell Ka- Supergirl that someone was in her previous place.
  âOh! I met her earlier.â
âThatâs really great, Querl. Iâm glad youâre happy.â
He flinched, just a little, turning a bit away from her. To have her use his name when she had already figuratively stomped on his heart... Well, that only made it ache worse, as psychological as the pain was.
âYouâre... glad?â He didnât think he could be glad for her, if she found someone else. Querl would try not to be resentful, but he highly doubted he could manage in that.
He could even say her name. How could he handle her with someone else? It was her right, it was so definitely her right, but he...
It hurt too much to even think about.
ââŠHi.â He couldnât quite look at her.
He knew she had been avoiding him - but he had wanted to see her. âHow have you been?â
Social niceties? Ugh.
  âIâve been great.â
It wasnât a lie. Life had been less hectic since leaving the Legion.
  âWhat about you?â
â...Well, I suppose. I have a girlfriend. Andromeda.â
That was acceptable to state, right? It hurt him to say, though - to tell Ka- Supergirl that someone was in her previous place.
ââŠSupergirl.â Not Kara. He couldnât call her that anymore.
âYou are⊠still here.â
Rao. She had done her best to avoid him, but it seemed her best wasnât good enough. How long had it been?
Six months?Â
Maybe longer.
It definitely felt like longer.
   âHi, Brainy.â
â...Hi.â He couldnât quite look at her.
He knew she had been avoiding him - but he had wanted to see her. âHow have you been?â
Social niceties? Ugh.
â...Supergirl.â Not Kara. He couldnât call her that anymore.
âYou are... still here.â
He pulls back just slightly to look at her, and reaches up to gently tuck a strand of hair behind her ear.
âWas she not?â Itâs hard to imagine.
âShe wasnât⊠Good with emotion. When my father died,     she didnât take it well. She got cruel. And I -â
Kara paused and looked down.
âI actually wished that she would have died instead of him. ⊠And then she did.â
Querl knew many would reassure her with meaningless platitudes. That âIâm sure she was proud of youâ, and the like.
He does not.
âHer death does not change the fact that she was cruel. Your wish did not impact her death. I often wished my father had died as well.â And then he did, and Querl felt no remorse. It was... good, in a way.
It doesnât matter if he is, he wants to say. Every Brainiac has gotten better than the one before, and so have I. It is my destiny, insofar that such a thing actually exists. He knew I would be better. I knew I would be better. The pride of a dead man means absolutely nothing to me. It affects me little. Who cares about his pride or lack of it?
Instead, he wraps his arms around her, lips quirking up into a tired smile.
ââŠThank you, Kara.â
âI know that⊠Dealing with your parents can be hard.â
âFor a long time, all I wanted was for my mother to be proud of me,â she admits.
He pulls back just slightly to look at her, and reaches up to gently tuck a strand of hair behind her ear.
âWas she not?â Itâs hard to imagine.
He had not expected the tears, but - perhaps he should have. âSally, please donât cry,â Querl pleaded, unable to help himself. He could hear every, well, blubber through the phone and it was nigh-painful.
âIâm here, in the past - and Iâm⊠Iâm alive.â He couldnât say he was âokayâ. Not really. That couldnât be any further from the truth.
âI didnât mean to make you worry. Itâs why I left a note.â And the present, so that she would know he was still around and that he was still thinking of her. No, he hadnât expected the tears.
âYouâre HERE?â she squeaked, not bothering to keep her voice down. âWhat do you mean youâre here? Why? No, nevermind that! Where are you! Iâll come see you! â
GOD, why did her friends always make her worry like this? Â Of COURSE she was ecstatic that Querl was back in this day and age, BEYOND ecstatic, but why had he spoken about it like he was? Why was he being so cryptic and - WORRYING? Sally gripped the phone so tightly it could have broken, even with her weak strength. She sighed several times, rubbing her head, trying to catch her breath and really take in what he was telling her.Â
âWhat do you mean âyouâre aliveâ? Why wouldnât you be alive? Whatâs happened? Are, are you in trouble? â
He inhaled shakily. It was best to attempt to detach himself from the conversation, if he wanted to live through it. âIt is not that... I am. In trouble. You merely asked if I was okay, and I replied. I am alive.â Was he âokayâ? No, he was not, which he did not wish to plainly say. Hopefully she would not pick up on that - his 21st century friend could be surprisingly observant at times, though.
Querl leaned against the wall of the box he was in, trying not to let the fact that he was exhausted, he was tired, he was hungry escape into his voice. Formerly, that would not have been a problem.
âI am not currently in trouble, and I am alive.â It was the only thing he could truly reassure her of. âI... I do not wish for you to see me, though. Physically. It is why I called you.â
have you ever shipped a ship so hard you forgot it wasnât canon
