WHAT a goddamn mood
This Autumn, let something die.
A worry, a relationship, a project that has run its course. Let go of anxiety over the future. Let go of guilt.
Let go of other peopleâs dreams for you. Let go of the fear that happiness or success or love or joyousness somehow isnât for you.
Let go of feeling unwanted. Go outside, can you feel how deeply your presence is craved here?
Let go of the small and burdensome things. Gifts never opened. Keys without a lock. Broken earrings, old love letters, the ephemera on your fridge.
As David Whyte writes, âAnything or anyone that does not bring you alive is too small for you.â This Autumn, let go of all the clothes you have outgrown.
Let go of comparison.
Let go of doubt.
Let go of the feeling that you are somehow not good enough.
Because every imperfect apple that lays soft in your hands, and every ray of low Autumn sunlight that warms you through woolens will tell you a different story, a much truer story. The story that you are more, much more, than enough. That you bless this world simply by being alive.
I just want a relationship where we are both equally obsessed with each other, but in a healthy way. Save my selfies when I send them to you. Text me âI know youâre sleeping right now, butâŚâ. Take the time to listen to the songs that are important to me. Joke around with me and make fun of me and then kiss me right after. Tell your friends how happy I make you and how excited youâll be when we are finally married. Double text me because you miss me. Reassure me when Iâm feeling insecure. Grab my hand, hold me, show everyone Iâm yours. Donât hold back on me, tell me how much you want me and how much you love me. Make me happy and I will do my best to make you happier.

How to Substitute in a Spell đż
not all witches have the same budget or spell ingredients readily available to them, so when one witch writes a spell with ingredients they consider easy to procure, it may not be the same for the next witch that wants to try that spell.Â
đż homemade replacements:
sometimes you can make a substitute for the ingredients, the way land locked witches can make sea water from sea salt and tap water. itâs not entirely the same but itâll do well enough. however, not everything can be almost-manufactured.
đż common âreplaces anythingâ alternatives:
rosemary - replaces any herb
rose - replaces any flower
quartz - replaces any crystal
white or black candle - replaces any candle.Â
however, these are just stand in- the hold the spot, boost the spell, but only in generic, neutral energy. these ingredients can even water down the intent of the spell because they donât support the correspondences of the spell. without components that have the intent of the spell, what do you have to direct that energy?
đż so how to replace a spell component?
the core of any spell is the intent, the results it wants to achieve. however, that intent is the sum of the intents of the ingredients in the spell. you need to break down the spell into its ingredients and understand what is needed and why, and even if anything is expendable.Â
example: Â a spell to speak clearly may have one herb for communication and another for clarity, and one for luck.Â
the one for luck may be less necessary than the other ingredients, just there for a little boost to the spell.Â
however, using only the component for communication, the spell might only bring opportunities to communicate, and they may go badly or well, thereâs nothing in the spell to balance that. so the other component is needed, the one for clarity.Â
however the herb for clarity on its own may end up only providing insight and understanding on your part, and not communicating well with others.
figure out the correspondences of the herbs and their part in the spell, and look up herb/stone/etc correspondences for that intent, and replace with what you find that is available to you.Â
đż however, there are other times you may need to replace something in a spell, like personal association.Â
say you hate lavender, yet itâs in every calming or sleep spell. if lavender makes you gag when you need a sleep spell, itâs plain not going to help the spell for you, even if you have plenty of lavender on hand.Â
again you research what lavender or whatever herb generally stands for, and find an equivalent, like chamomile tea. if you like chamomile and have it on hand, it can be your new go-to replacement.Â

So, you want to be a witch? #5
Part one talks about spells, wards, sigils, cleansing, divination and more!
Part two talks about grimoires, crystals, wands, altars and more!
Part three talks about this vs. that for a lot of the common terms you hear!
Part four talks about types of witches, deities and more!
It can be easy to feel super overwhelmed when youâre first starting off. This post is for very new witches who have limited knowledge and would like a broad overview! These are my opinions, feel free to disagree but be polite about it.
This post is a little different than the other ones, itâs all about casting spells!
Grounding and cleansing yourself:
It often is harder to focus on a spell if you are stuck in your own thoughts or have the energies from the day on you. Iâll often start with cleansing myself, by burning a sage or cedar herb bundle, and then sit and take some focused breaths and becoming present in my body.
Casting a circle:
Many witches cast circles as a way to protect themselves from outside energies or unwanted spirits while theyâre performing magic. You can use the elements, a salt circle, invoking a deity, etc. Click the links to learn more! [X] [X] It is recommend you stay in the circle until you finish the spell and close the circle.
Drawing energy from something:
(So you donât draw all the energy from yourself, which can be draining). Energy can be drawn from the elements, from crystals, deities, and many other things. This can be done by visualization and energy work or by asking.Â
Casting the spell:
This is when you use your ingredients and the guidelines of the spell. It is best to be completely focused so try to avoid having distractions (like your phone) and have everything you need ready to go.Â
Closing any loopholes:
Often, this is not included in the written spell so this is up to you. I usually write a list of loopholes I want to close before starting this process, so itâs handy when Iâm finished with the spell! If itâs a spell you want to come to light in a certain way or by a certain time, this is when you clarify that. This post has more info [X]
Completing the spell and dispelling any energies:
Once you have finished with the loopholes, finishing the spell can be as simple as âthis spell is now completeâ. I recommend dispelling any energies you called on and returning them to where they belong. If you didnât cast a circle, now is the time to rid of anything you may have attracted by performing your spell.
Closing the circle:
Closing a circle is fairly simple! All you have to do is the reverse of how you cast it. (If it was with smoke for example, you would then undo the circle by burning the bundle in the opposite direction).
Cleansing and grounding:
Cleansing here is optional, depends on the spell, how youâre feeling, and if you want to do it. Grounding is highly recommended. This can come in many forms. I often use water, putting drops on the key points of my face (forehead, eyelids, cheeks, nose, lips and chin) and sit while taking focused breaths.
Other considerations:
Consent: If you are casting a spell on a specific person and they do not know or they have not given you permission, you do not have their consent. Spells cast to bring a general thing (to attract love instead of to make a specific person fall in love with you), with permission, or on yourself donât need consent/already have it!
Ingredients: Ingredients are often an important part of the spell and are included for a reason. They either represent a part of the spell, what the spell is trying to accomplish or are something you can draw energy from.
Alternative ingredients: If you canât get your hands on a certain ingredient, you can almost always use a substitute ingredient. Just use correspondences and trust your gut while searching for the perfect substitute. General rule: Clear quartz = any crystal, Rosemary = any herb, Rose = any flower.
Discarding used ingredients: (Click me)
Belief: If you donât believe the spell is going to work - it probably wonât. To combat this, take the time to find a spell you really believe will work and write a list of ways you might expect it to present in your life.
Intention: Similar to belief. Iâve performed magic only using a pen, paper, and my powerful intentions. The more powerfully you want something and bring it into your life, the more likely it is to appear. Intent is the end goal, why youâre casting the spell.Â
Deities: I do not use deities in my spellwork (or witchcraft at all). There is a huge amount of respect and connection-building that is required before asking a deity to help with your spell. I tend to avoid spells where a listed ingredient is a deity. (If you do have a connection with a deity, by all means ask them to help you out if that feels right to you!)
Energy: It is common to feel drained after casting a spell. Grounding yourself, casting a circle and drawing energy from other things all help with this, but allow yourself some time to recover. [X]

How to start practicing magic
I keep getting this question in my inbox so I figured Iâd post the answer publicly so I can refer to it instead. First of all though, there are tons of posts about this already and if you do a quick search through the âwitchcraft communityâ tag or âwitchcraft 101âł youâll find a lot of great advice already circulating. What Iâm going to outline here is my personal recommendation, and as for all my posts this is the âYMMVâ disclaimer (your mileage may vary, i.e. do what works for you and donât take this as absolute in any way).Â
Step 1: Pick a spell. Any spell. Seriously, it doesnât matter. Well⌠okay, maybe donât like⌠try to conjure Baphomet into your living room or something, but pick any rando spell that you feel like doing. Donât worry about what it is, or who wrote it, or how âauthenticâ it is. Do these things matter? Sure, maybe, depends on who you ask, but you can figure this stuff out later. For now, just pick a spell. The only real guideline Iâll give here is that it should ideally be something with a measurable result within a reasonable timeframe. Iâll get to why later.
Step 2: Bake a cake. Donât actually bake a cake (unless you want a cake, in which case by all means please bake a cake), but this is the part where you gather whatever it is you need for the spell and perform it as itâs written. Spells can in some ways be considered recipes in that you want to try following the directions first, and make your changes afterwards. This is especially true for a beginner or someone who doesnât know what theyâre doing yet.Â
Step 3: Mouth feel. The spell is done, congrats. You probably feel⌠nothing, tbh, maybe even vague disappointment. Why? Because this wasnât really your magic yet, and thereâs very likely something (maybe even a lot) missing. This is the most crucial part of your process. What were you expecting? What did you like, not like? Itâs time to write this down, and if youâre the type of person who wants to keep a grimoire this is a great first entry. Were you hoping for more ritual? Maybe ceremonial magic is what you should look into. Did you want there to be more bubbling cauldrons? Try looking into hearth magic or herbal magic. Were you missing a chant, a poem? Look more into spellcraft and the power of words. Some key subjects you can look up: crystal magic, herbal magic, hearth magic, cosmic magic, spirit work, death magic, healing magic, bane magic, divination, folk magic, chaos magic, technomancy, sigilwork, spellcraft, hedge walking, deity worship, sex magic, blood magic, etc. If any of these sound appealing to you, do a google search and read about them a little more so you can decide whether or not you want to delve in a little further.
Step 4: The cake is a lie. This is where we drop the food metaphors, and get back to that thing I brought up in step one: measurable results within a reasonable timeframe. This is the part that seems to get lost the most in all the advice going around, and in my opinion itâs the second most important (the first one being that practicing magic feels good/right to you). Grimoires arenât just supposed to be pretty lists of spells and correspondences, theyâre supposed to contain spells that actually work. The key here is to figure out what feels right to you as far as method, and then to refine that method to achieve tangible results. If you already feel great doing magic, let me tell you⌠youâll feel pretty fucking amazing when your magic starts having an actual effect on the world around you, and it shouldnât take years of mastery for that to happen. Small magics and simple spells can be done effectively by beginner witches, and these are the things you build upon to form your craft. If your magic isnât getting results, itâs not magic: itâs ceremony.
Step 5: Rinse and repeat. For most people there is a specific facet of magic that attracted them to it before they ever cast a spell, and while some people might know what it is straight off the bat most people donât, and thatâs fine. You donât need to know what youâre doing right at the start, and making mistakes isnât going to curse your house or open up a portal into the dark realms by accident (still assuming youâre doing beginner stuff and not trying to invoke dark spirits to do your bidding or something). The witchcraft side of tumblr can often look really serious and like everyone knows exactly what theyâre doing all the time, but the truth of the matter is thereâs a lot of trial and error and thatâs exactly what magic is supposed to be. If youâre looking towards magic as something to provide all the answers for you, youâre gonna have a real bad time. Itâs about looking at how other people have gotten to where you want to go, and forging your own route from there.
On a final note, Iâd just like to add that if anyone claims to be an absolute authority on any given topic of witchcraft or occultism, be extremely fucking wary. If anyone is saying you need to pay x amount of money or buy x number of things to be a âreal witchâ, be extremely fucking wary. Witchcraft existed before money, before capitalism, before industrialization and consumerism.Â
As always, my inbox is open if you have any questions about this (or anything else). If I donât know the answer, I can usually point you towards someone who does or at least give you a direction to search in. Happy witching!
