Well, Janet, it turns out that no matter how much someone matters to you, your life is still your own, and your decisions are based on what, at that moment, you think is best for you because, spoiler: you have to survive, especially if you don’t have loving parents waiting for you at home to give you a hug, no savings for the future, no stable life, and no functional prospects because you were raised in a fucking shack with no money or resources and with parents who neither protected you nor gave you any sense of security.

Maybe if you’d been there, Janet, and handed Snape a bank account and made Dumbledore expel his abusers, then maybe he would’ve thought more about Lily when looking for a place where he wouldn’t get beaten up and where he could feel safe and have some chance to grow. I don’t know, girl, call me crazy.

If James bullied Severus because the latter knew a lot or liked dark magic, then why didn’t he also target the wealthy pure-bloods from important families? Instead, he conveniently chose a poor half-blood boy with no financial resources or family support as the main target of his taunts and abuse.

James hated dark magic, but rather than torment all the future dark wizards who were already showing signs of what they would become, he decided to go after someone who couldn’t defend himself socially or economically. James didn’t go after the boys with money and strong family support because he knew that would have consequences. Bullying someone with present, well-resourced, and influential parents could cause him problems. With Severus, he didn’t have to worry. He was a nobody. Just a poor half-Muggle kid who couldn’t even afford decent clothes. He was the easy prey, and that’s basic bully behavior: you go after the person you perceive as the most vulnerable. The dark magic excuse is just that—an excuse. James targeted Severus because his social and economic position allowed it, while Severus’ situation made it so there were no consequences for James’ actions.

Does anyone else think that Rowling has drawn a lot of inspiration from Emily Bronte's Heathcliff for Snape's character?

Heathcliff loved Cathy in an obsessive way. Snape loved Lily. In both cases they were childhood friends, for a time it was them against the world and she was the one who saw goodness in him despite his pride and spite.

In both cases the girl’s sibling loathed the boy and the feelings were returned tenfold.

Heathcliff was discriminated because he was part gypsy, Snape lived in a Muggle community and under the roof of a father who hated magic and seems to have been abusive towards his mother.

Both characters have strong antagonism with a rich guy their age who has more prospects and who ends up marrying the girl.

Both characters are hateful towards the next generation and they eventually kind of care but not enough to put their pride aside.

Heathcliff and Snape are opposites of each other, in terms of their own actions.  Heathcliff uses Catherine’s death/”betrayal” as an excuse to hurt the family she marries into.  Granted, the Lintons are shallow snobs, but Heathcliff extends his horrible behavior into the second generation, which is entirely unjustified. He’s an entirely self centered person.   Heathcliff becomes stylish and well groomed in the second half of the book.  He buys himself big houses and is attractive.  This tells the reader that just because you look nice and follow conventional social rules doesn’t mean you’ll be a good person.

Snape on the other hand, uses Lily’s death as inspiration to become a better person.  He fights for a side that actively tortured him personally in the past, but does it because it is right for the world as a whole.  This is the opposite of Heathcliff, who wallows in his own suffering and doesn’t care about the rest of the world at all.  Snape isn’t perfect; he’s a bully to Harry and to other Gryffindors, but he does care about them and the other kids at Hogwarts, arguably more than other teachers.  Snape is not well groomed and still lives in a shabby Muggle laborer house even though his salary allows him to live better.  He is not conventionally attractive.  This tells the reader that just because you don’t look nice and are socially awkward doesn’t mean that you will be a bad person, that you can’t be a prince.

So yes, they do share similarities in terms of their tragic pasts, but the ways they approach society and life are completely different.

Snape not being a vampire is up there among the most hilariously bizarre fake outs of the series. You’re telling me that in this universe where vampires canonically are a thing, you have a dude with “an unhealthy pallor” who is described multiple times as being bat-like and even has the ability to fly like a giant bat in the sky, lives in the dungeons and hangs out in the dark all fucking day, dresses in billowing black and bares his teeth as a show of aggression and… he’s just… some guy? A regular ass human man? So he just… chooses… to live like that….

Underrated badass Snape moment is when Fluffy absolutely mauls his leg and the dude just... walks it off. No magical healing of any kind, Filch just gets him some bandages and that's it. What a fucking boss lol. Absolute unit.
