the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.

in an age where machine translation is getting better and better I BEG you to keep learning languages and keep your brain sharp and keep an open mind. learning a language is so much more than memorizing a bunch of words, it opens up ways of seeing the world you hadn't considered before that are inherent to the way things are phrased in another language. it gives you a new lens through which you'll view life. it will make your life fuller, more well-rounded, more fulfilling. please learn languages other than your own.

The EBU has a survey open for Eurofans to fill out about the state of the contest. There are questions here that definitely make it apparent that they have lost the faith of most of the fanbase. I strongly encourage everyone who has ever been a fan of the contest to fill it out, especially if you are now boycotting, because this gives you a place to expressively say why, and what needs to change. There are a few questions that are pretty pointed, so I gave them some pretty pointed answers. You even are asked to rate how concerned you are for the future of the contest.

I get that some people just want to see the contest burn to the ground, and I completely understand the feelings around that, But I know for many of us, it has been a special part of lives, and it's been hard to deal with. I know for myself, I want the EBU to know my frustrations. However you feel, please let them know if you are compelled to do so.

hey do you guys think that the cupboard scene -> apologize route in The Incident Game was a manifestation of lister’s fear about what would happen if he were ever to sincerely admit that he feels out of control in his drinking problem & is scared & wants to stop? or do you think that scene implies that he has, in fact, tried to open up about it before & was ignored/shut down in the face of issues that seemed more pressing at the time

because it's like... no, jimmy, he doesn't think you're joking, it's just that he has had this problem for two years and has since accepted that nobody else really gives a shit about it as long as he can still work. we don't know what the incident on show day really was, but we know that it was perhaps the biggest cry for help of all time, and cecily– the only trusted adult who is meant to be supervising them on tour, the one person who is both close enough to him and old enough to maybe see the scale of this problem for what it is– can only sigh and shake her head and create a rule that he can't drink within 5 hours of performing anymore, because she has bigger fish to fry. lister knows he's an alcoholic, and he has long since given up on thinking anyone cares about his wellbeing enough to notice. he just adopts it as a part of his rockstar persona and accepts that he's going to feel terrible forever & die tragically young.
