Ok so i saw a post mentioning how Spindlehorse was hiring animators again, and i thought "huh yknow im really curious what the turnover rate of animators is in this studio" because i mean its a genuine question considering how i swear theyre hiring new animators every other week
So then i checked IMDB...
Before i go on i wanna put some context because its kinda needed for what im about to say:
On IMDB there's a section of the cast and crew page labeled "Series Animation Department". This is the section meant primarily for animators and storyboarders among other jobs in the same vein.
Now. Can you guess how many animators/storyboarders Helluva Boss has gone through in less than 2 seasons?
444.
That is four hundred and forty-four individual credits, a majority of whom didn't stay for any longer than a few episodes. I have never in my life seen an animator turnover rate this skewed.
But i saw this and i went "well it cant be that bad right, what about other shows?" because admittedly i didnt know a lot about animation so for all i knew this was normal. So i went to the IMDB pages of other animated shows
RWBY: 164 credited animators over 9 seasons
Murder Drones: 11 Animators over 7 episodes
The Owl House: 88 Animators over 3 seasons
Amphibia: 73 over 3 seasons
Steven Universe: 44 over 5 seasons
And just to be fair let's include Hazbin Hotel, which had 62 in 1 season
This means that for one reason or another Helluva Boss has gone through more animators in less than 2 seasons than shows that ran for SIGNIFICANTLY longer go through in their entire lifespan by several times and that astounds me
One thing i also wanna add to really put it into more perspective for those who don't get it, I remember reading these and going "jesus christ, i don't even think Marvel movies have that many people". So i looked it up.
Avengers Infinity War has 128 people credited under "Animation Department"
Now i read that and i thought "That's not a fair comparison because its a movie, not a show" so i looked up one of the Marvel shows, Loki, which has a really heavy focus on its art and stylization. 22 credits.
Then i thought "Now that's not fair either because its live action" so i checked What If, which is entirely animated. 102 credits.
Nearly 4 times the amount of people have worked on HB than have worked on Marvels flagship animated series
The only thing ive found that's comperable to HB in terms of how many people have worked on it relative to its length is X-Men 97 which has 308 credits, but that at least checks out because XM97 is one of the most visually stunning pieces of animated media you can possibly watch
One last reblog for those who are wondering, i had someone dm me asking how i got these numbers, i just highlighted all the names in the section and pasted them here and used how many rows there were as the count, but im learning now that there are apparently far more that i just didnt see (i don't use imdb a lot lol)
I can’t… there’s a photorealistic Alligator right fucking there and an anthropomorphic 3ft tall blue hedgehog and a giant purple cat standing right next to it.
Vector crying in the club right now
some deranged twitter user took a picture of a ( presumptively ) interracial gay couple and was like “omg this is just like the netflix jeffrey dahmer show” and it’s fucking insane how true crime has rotted people’s brains into spewing out fucking pro-segregation rhetoric but also people are way too comfortable taking photos of complete strangers and posting them online for clout.
if i went out on a date with my boyfriend and then saw someone take a picture of us and than post it online for 100k likes i would actually kill them and they would deserve it.
like taking pictures of strangers in public and then posting it online without permission is already bad in most contexts and i wish that more people would just stop and think before doing it but like. this is racism, this is literally just that “squid game fans when they see an asian person in public” meme taken to it’s worst possible extreme,.
I’m just real excited for Sonic Frontiers can you tell
I’m more of a Hydrocity man, myself.
I think what he's getting at here is while most "Open World" games start from the position of wanting to deliver this wide huge expansive sandbox game map that's oh so biiig and you can spend a whole afternoon running from one end of the map to the other end
Sonic Team started from the position of their standard linear action stages, and just pulled the blinders off. Opening the levels up to all taking place on the same map.
I think that's why they're focusing on this term "open zone" rather than "open world." It feels like the experience they're trying to deliver is a traditional Sonic game without loading screens between the levels, rather than a big huge empty map just for the sake of having a big huge map.
Hey Sonic fans
There's a difference between delay and a overhaul
A delay is when the company is taking the time to polish up on the technical aspects
An overhaul is when the game is fundamentally changed from the ground up.
What most of you guys are asking for is an overhaul.
I say this with complete sincerity that you really need to know how game development works.
Sonic fandom right now
Glad we're keeping the tradition
Honestly at this point I don't care if Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is cringey or lame or whatever. I want it to break records. I want it to make Marvel and Nintendo and Disney nervous. I want them tripping over themselves to try and one-up a movie franchise about a preteen hedgehog fighting Jim Carrey.
In a recent interview, Tika Sumpter reveals that she specifically requested that her character got a more active role in the sequel.
“I literally went over to them and said ‘First of all, don’t make me be on the phone the whole movie and pregnant or anything… I want to be more active’ and they listened.”
The actress also admitted to Maddie’s role as “Sonic’s adopted mother”, and said we will see more of that.
“Sonic is a teenager and you constantly have to just be on top of him but you also have to let go and let him be who he is…it’s tough to let go and let him be independent. So that heart and that family part is very much in there.”
