life update

hi friends! just wanted to let you know that starting monday, i'll probably be on tumblr a lot less. the good news is: i'm starting a new job! bad news is: i'll have a lot less free time to goof off on here with all you lovely people. I'm gonna try to not be a stranger or disappear entirely, but I'll likely be lurking a lot less and be slower to respond to things. Just know, I'm okay! nothing terrible has happened, my mental health is fine, I'm just busy. 🫶

please still tag me in things! still gonna try to do creative things like writing and music, i just don't know how much time or energy i'll have left after working all day.

Forgive me if you've heard this before, but like

I kinda love the Durge Gale romance, not just because Gale is very much my type and his romance is lovely, but because of the whole god parallel thing

Ok I've always been kinda bad at explaining this, but let me try my best.

Gods, at least in BG3, are embodiments of concepts, right? Bhaal is murder, Mystra is the Weave, Shar is darkness/loss, etc, etc. They don't have interest in things not related to their domain and they don't really have much personality beyond their job. That's what makes them so different from mortals. Mortals are complex and multifaceted, and while a god's domain can be complicated as well, they aren't anything more than what they represent. Bhaal doesn't like to cook and make homemade recipes, Shar doesn't give a shit about reading tomes by the fire, and Mystra isn't terrible and yet amazing at flirting. By all accounts, Withers is the funniest of all the gods, and that's because he's so serious and mysterious that he's funny. Besides the Withers thing, these are all traits that Gale displays just by being himself.

So, when Gale becomes a god, all those small things about him either get wiped or heightened based on how they relate to Ambition. All the enchanting things about him get erased and the things in the world he found enchanting become boring to him. His literal first words at the reunion party when he becomes a god is remarking on how boring he finds Faerun now.

Of course, Gale doesn't know this will happen, but that's kinda why I'm so fascinated with him and Durge as a couple

Cause Durge was created by a god. They were created by a concept and they were made to be a concept, meant to live a god's life when they've always been a person

If Durge wants to be anything more than murder or try to resist their urges, they get punished for it, with the two main examples being Durge accidentally murdering their adopted family and feeling so ashamed of their admiration of Gortash (platonic or romantic, your pick) that they write a whole prayer about it, begging their father for forgiveness. The only intimacy they're allowed is with their corpses for gods' sake.

So basically as Gale is trying to escape the Netherse orb and find a way to extend his possibly rapidly ending life by reaching for godhood instead, Durge (a reformed one) is actively trying to escape their old life by becoming more than a god in the most mortal way possible. By making friends, finding new interests unrelated to their domain, and just living through the human experience (maybe not human, but you know what I mean). It makes for a really intriguing dynamic even if they aren't dating, but I love it a bit more when they are. Makes their arguments about the Crown of Karsus a lot more interesting when you frame it as Durge trying to save Gale from living the life they once had

Issue with drows and sleep

I picked drow for Clementine purely for the aesthetic and knew literally nothing about the lore, and now I find out drow don’t sleep?? they trance?? fine. headcanon time.

I chose to believe that drows can sleep, they just don’t need to. and trance keeps you semi-aware - you hear the door, you feel the footsteps. sleep doesn’t. sleep is four to eight hours of being completely, helplessly gone. no drow raised the way drow are raised would ever choose that.

Clementine loves sleeping. blankets, pillows, the whole ritual of it. it’s decadent and useless and entirely for pleasure, which is exactly her brand.

except. she only actually does it when she knows she’s safe. which means for most of her life she didn’t do it at all.

which means the first time Gale wakes up and realizes she’s not trancing next to him, she’s asleep - actually asleep, dead to the world, drooling slightly on his shoulder - that wizard is going to understand exactly what he’s just been handed. and he’s not going to move his arm for six hours.

While the Butler is a super fun and spooky visualization for the urges your Dark Urge faces, I always loved the idea of them manifesting as the past version of you.

Imagine the potential of the same-self trial in Shar’s Guantlet. Or even if after certain events in the Temple of Bhaal, having to face and destroy that part of you once’s it’s been torn out of your blood.

Visera of course would never stab her wizard. She prefers him fully intact, human, and not blown up alongside a netherbrain.

Pairing: Gale x Tav

Summary: In which Tav and Gale both pine, and Astarion entertains himself; prequel to Upon A Star (you don’t need to have read it beforehand)

Chapter Ten

She is sparring with Wyll when they return from Grymforge. She has never been in camp for this long while the others are away, nor has she felt quite this restless before. It’s been a while since she’d been left behind, and whilst she was slightly disgruntled by it to begin with, she could hardly argue that she would be best placed to help. Solving puzzles and talking to automatons in riddles? Yes. Fighting her way through a Duergar encampment? Absolutely not. Tav knows her strengths. Just about. Fighting is still not one of them, and they all know it.

It still stung a little that they’d gone before she’d risen. She has a vague recollection of the ghost of a kiss beneath blankets, but she can’t be sure. Knows that Gale had held her to him all night. Knows that she’d twisted around to face him at some point. Knows she had fallen asleep with her legs tangled with his, her mouth pressed to the hollow of his throat, the feel of his pulse beneath her lips. Knows she’d woken to his side of the bed cold, that he’d purposely not roused her. Perhaps simply to just let her rest. But, a part of her likes to think it was a conscious effort to ensure she slept in, that by the time she woke she’d have less time to wait in camp for his return.

So, with that in mind, Tav had slowly gotten ready for the day ahead; had spent what remained of the morning daydreaming. Fantasising about a life post-tadpole might still be a little farfetched, but that’s what daydreams are for, after all. It may also be a little premature to allow her imagination to conjure forth how she and Gale might continue once their adventure is done. In fact, the story playing out in her minds eye is so vivid that she splutters out an enthusiatic ‘I do’ when Wyll asks her a question. It is a happy coincidence that he has asked if she would like to pass the time with their blades.

I am traveling and eking out bits of the third chapter of Sune's Whirlpool on trains and in queues. The opening is under the read more, if you have finished chapter 2. If you haven't, big mclargehuge spoiler alert!

Awakening was an upward swim, a blind and weightless struggle into sensation. Heat, and light sweat; the gentle slap of water against stone. The smell of salt sea and linen stored in lavender. Familiar. In times past, comforting.

Not so now.

Gale could not open his eyes. If they remained closed he could tell himself it was tomorrow. He could tell himself the afterlife had somehow taken on a sensory aspect so like his bedroom that it was indistinguishable. If he opened his eyes the truth would make itself known.

His sleep-fuzzed mind shook itself off and informed him that he could not be waking in his bed on Midsummer's Day. If his failed spell had somehow catapulted him out of the loop then it would carry all its destruction with it. He would have no tower; it would be a smoking ruin, center of a circle of burning death.

So. It was likely not tomorrow. If that were so Gale earnestly hoped he was dead. It would be a shame to leave Vinca behind, and Tara and his mother would grieve, but any afterlife barring perhaps the hells would be preferable to returning to the horrifying sameness of the loop.

That alert and painfully logical portion of his mind reminded him that if he was dead, he had achieved that state at the cost of hundreds of lives and the destruction of probably a tenth of Waterdeep. It was selfish to wish to be dead, at such a cost.

Gale did not open his eyes.

A splintering crash split open the quiet of the morning.

listen it's not that I think epic the musical is a perfect adaption of the odyssey but it was an impressive passion project that knew what it wanted to be and knew what people gravitated to in the original work and it put significant effort into conveying this through its unique medium and tone to the point that hundreds of other people felt compelled to put effort into their own artistic interpretations of that version of the story. and that's really cool! and yes I would be more critical if it was a 100 million dollar project made by a professional because what the fuck do you mean you're a world-famous director and you cut the my name is nobody scene are you goddamn serious

My heart is full and my eyes are teary and it's only been 2 hours into my birthday. I will miss my dog for many years to come, I'm sure. But my little heart beats easier thinking that she would be happy to see me this thoroughly loved. Thank you again for welcoming me here and treating me with such tender care that my brain short circuited from the foreignness of it all. I will try again when my eloquence returns, it left somewhere together with all the languages i know, which is many.

Much love to everyone. it is truly such a blessing, i shall spend a long time proving myself worthy of such affection.

And yes, I truly cannot get enough of this masterpiece by most beloved @vasiliquemort had gifted me. I won't get enough of it ever, I think. So many more precious gifts to share. So much love to spread.
