Off Topic Post: Community Watches ATLA

Been watching ATLA and Community in my free time and realized Abed would probably be really into the Avatar franchise. So here’s how I think it would play out if the study group (+Chang) watched Avatar: The Last Airbender together:

Chang: Alright bitches, time for a CHANG of pace. This is a whitey-free show!

Pierce: Please, the Fire Nation is clearly caucasoid.

Jeff: Uh-huh… Explain to me why we’re watching a children’s cartoon again?

Shirley: That little bald monk boy is nice and all, but those people need to know that Jesus is the only true savior of the world…

Britta: The Air people were a perfect, pacifistic society. I would totally be an Airbender if I lived in that world.

Jeff: Except that, in order to be one of them, you’d actually have to huff air every single day.

Annie: I think Katara and Jet would make a good couple…

Shirley: No! Katara should be with Aang, he’s sweet and treats her well.

Pierce: You mean Ong?

Abed: My favorite character is Aang, he’s talented and good-hearted but his tendency to avoid responsibility and crack under pressure keeps him from reaching his full potential. He reminds me of someone I know…

I also think that the strength gap is at least partially manufactured women would in fact be stronger overall if little girls were encouraged to do physically taxing games and activities and eat their fill while they’re growing vs having to constantly diet and be sedentary indoors (or god forbid do intense cardio while under-eating). The amount of adult women honestly afraid to lift weights bc they think they’ll get bulky as though bulking isn’t a full time job that athletes have to spend all their time on and anyone on earth gets shredded from just using their adult muscles for their intended purpose, girl your bone density 🥀

if you say women are intentionally nerfed from birth in 2026 people look at you like you’re insane and start condescendingly telling you about how women are just better at different things (but not during their periods haha) but this was a completely basic feminist talking point I grew up with like “girls can do it too! DID YOU KNOW that sometimes characters lie. out loud to others and internally to themselves, and it'll happen right there on the page. other times they are just flat out wrong and don't know it. oftentimes they don't ever find that out. a sizable portion of any story is decidedly not cold hard fact.

Sex scene as character study is so good. What is your relationship to your body? What is your relationship to your partner? What lessons have you absorbed from the culture about yourself as a sexual being? How much do you have to trust someone before being comfortable with intimacy? What fears and insecurities come to the fore for you when you take your clothes off? It's so good.
