Summary:

The elder Warrior of Light, a charismatic, discerning, and multi-talented woman. She has been trained in combat since a young age, making her formidable on the battlefield. She is just as capable with her words on the debate floor and is worldly-wise in the affairs and inner workings of mainland Eorzea, making her second to Alphinaud in diplomatic affairs among the Scions. Y'dehlya is a lover of adventures, new experiences, and luxuries, not to mention a hopeless romantic at heart. Though underneath her warm personality and her protectiveness lies a woman still bearing the scars of the Calamity's aftermath, and burning desires to usher in an era of peace and to personally see that threats to her world's safety crumble to dust. Summary:

The younger Warrior of Light, a brash, excitable, and competitive showboat of an adventurer. Once, he sought battles for the thrill and glory, and his early days as a Warrior of Light made him grow arrogant in his power. But fate had tempered him soundly, having him wrestle with his own inner demons to define what his true nature as a warrior and as a man would be. He has arisen from these battles a protector for the innocent and downtrodden, becoming more emotionally aware of others, though he still retains his boisterous personality and a healthy love for battle and competition. He has developed a keen interest in machines and technology and was taken under the wings of both Cid and Nero. Sometimes, he works part-time for the Garlond Ironworks. Summary:

Y'dehlya's brother who possesses the Echo. He is a researcher employed by the Sons of Saint Coinach tasked with investigating ancient Allagan Summoning magic. Her opposite in sociability, the sharp-tongued Kouh'to maintains a more melancholy disposition that is difficult to read. He is insatiably curious; known to wander and do as he pleases, finding trouble as much as it finds him, and enjoys getting rises out of others, yet flusters easily and is uncomfortable being surrounded. Yet his acerbic mannerisms conceal a soul both gentler and more protective, especially towards the sister who often took care of him, and a temper that when lit with the right spark, erupts like a volcano. Against his older siblings, it is he who excels the most in the arcane arts, a fact he is quite proud of. But, he, too, was subjected to the same training they have at the same age they started. Has a hidden talent for acting.

Dropping in a rec for Our Unending Journey by Saba Sabaton! The art is so amazing, but also pulls its weight in its writing, Saba has shown a genuinely impressive skill at weaving in a unique story with the plot of the game. It will go places you aren't expecting. It's also only in heavensward currently, so It's perfect for new players who aren't fully caught up. I'd recommend anyone interested in ffxiv fancomics to give it a try

As much as I love Shadowbringers and Endwalker, it's so hard to read other people's posts about their love for it because, they always drag down the previous expansions.

Like, yes, SHB and EW are peak expansions that I personally don't think anything new will ever truly live up to, but. man. It's so disheartening to hear people talk so poorly about ARR through Stormblood. ARR is fantastic once you get past the initial introductory phase and if you are lucky to not have to rely on the world's worst EN localisation and does a masterful work of laying down the groundwork for the rest of the game.

I see so many posts where it's someone asking "hey! I've seen you talk about Shadowbringers a lot, is the game worth it?" and the answerer rightfully sings of the expansion's praise but then. Immediately goes into dragging the previous expansions like "the expansions are absolutely miserable to get through but you sadly have to play them in order to actually understand SHB's story" like!!! no!!! The expansions play off each other so well and even if there are certain stories that don't work as good, they are still good stories worth experiencing!!!

I also just think in general saying that the first three expansions—which at minimum takes about 300 hours if you're being thorough—are terrible while trying to convince someone to play the game is. a surefire way to make that person not play the game.

head in hands. the way sphene's arc is a perfect tragedy but nobody starting with the writers themselves seems to realize it.

imagine the horror of waking up after practically the most traumatic events conceivable, leading up to nothing less than your death, only to find out that they made - without your consent or knowledge, of course - an AI version of you, using your likeness, voice, memories, and core personality traits tweaked to fill the needs of the nameless, mysterious puppeteerer holding the strings in the shadows, who is only keeping the aspects of your personhood that fit his agenda at any given time. and this - extremely sophisticated - AI is, as far as you can tell, sentient and aware of her nature and fate, but unable to do anything about it, agency being denied at every turn. and the thing is - people love her. her people - your people - adore her. she's endlessly (hah) doting, gentle, caring, the sister to every child and mother to everyone, a perfect doll to be deployed to pacify and placate the feelings of anyone. she has no needs nor even preferences of her own, the better to accomodate that of others. her algorithm - to which she is, as an AI, completely bound - even pushed her to self-destruct and violate every single principle she held, even though it cost her the small fraction of agency and personhood she had managed to build. she was stuck in what was effectively an abusive marriage of convenience for survival for three decades. that copy was eventually erased, then remade with slightly different parameters in order to follow a slightly different agenda, and nobody sees the difference. nobody even remembers the former iteration. you can, however. you never met the original AI - whom everyone including your newfound (and only) friends loves and clearly grieves, including someone you may or may not be falling in love with, who clearly was in love with the unauthorized AI version of you. eventually you manage to reclaim your agency, your personhood, you fight the shadow puppeteer, you even win! - and then, what happens?

you're back to square one. the people are grateful and they love you oh so much. everyone just looks up at you with hopeful, expectant, wet puppy eyes. they need you! by which, obviously, they mean they need the old version of you, the AI that only ever served them, even though they swear it's not the case, that they've changed now; was your own education, in a bygone era, when you were reared to assume this duty (and enthusiastically rose up to the challenge) anything different than a cold algorithmic decision? can you even tell the difference? programming is programming, isnt it? you have your duty. you need to protect and serve these people. who are you to refuse their wishes? yet something feels unfair, something buried very deep inside you. so you hesitate. you bow and examine the tiara - a girlish accessory, even though she was about 400 years old at this point - which was used to monitor your AI predecessor's every thought and action, spy on her constantly, and presumably give her orders. things are different now, they say. things are back to normal. the cycle has been fulfilled. only this time you are dimly aware of the personhood you're being so efficiently denied. or are you? is anyone? nobody seems to see anything wrong with this state of affairs. your newfound - and only! - friends encourage you to accept this role. for the sake of continuity, says the woman you may or may not be in love with. you are all standing in an illusory, impossible, computer-generated landscape. you slowly put the tiara on. I think Momodi is the Adventurer's Guild representative who gives sprouts The Talk, like, period care on the road, where to get or make potions that slow or stop your flow, emergency morning after potions, etc. She will sit them down and talk in a no-nonsense way and give you business cards for her alchemist guild friends and her chosen merchants for various products and set you up for a life where you don't have any disasters of any sort mid-lengthy-quest-chain.

i've been thinking about this for so long and i'm glad to say i came to the same conclusions 🤝 i think miounne would also help but she'd be more concerned about pain control than total birth control and stopping your period and such. more like "you are entitled to proper rest and medical care on the job! take it easy! handle your body on its own timeframe! men don't get to tell you when to take a break!" which 1) very nice and valid but 2) irma completely disregarded (she has a JOB to do) before, and with great relief, buying a lifetime subscription to Complete Period Stop 3000 at momodi's trusted alchemist contact (30% discount upon presenting your guild membership card). she doesn't know it also acts as birth control though (because she doesnt even consider the possibility of it being a thing she could go through)

Yes! Exactly why I discounted her :') She'd be really nice to go to if you felt like shit, but she'd feed you up iron rich food and give you a hot water bottle, and send you away with vitamin pills because she was worried about you getting faint in combat, which are all very nice, but for the adventurer on the go who doesn't want to think about it, a bi-weekly potion with guaranteed alchemical Effects is a little easier to manage XD

Being the tragedy enjoyer that I am, as well as someone who thinks if a story introduces an idea its fair game to see how far it'll stretch until it snaps, I want to know what would have happened if Garlemald laid siege to Sharlyan.

Not in a magic vs magitek sense because that's boring and i don't care, but because i want to see their philosophy in action. What does Sharlyan's stance of 'history happens to other people' do when history knocks on the door. The end of days is too neat, and the goddess given mission having already been accepted by their predecessors generations ago lets them dodge much of the decision making. Especially when so much of the story so far has been about disgusting grubby real wars, I don't like letting the question get side stepped in favour of metaphor.

I want to know what the plan is when the Garlean navy surrounds the island. There is nowhere to run. The maelstrom isn't sailing in to save the day. Their trading partners cannot get in. They cannot get out. Resources are dwindling. What now?

They are pacifist extremists, specifically contrasted with Gridania's armed neutrality, Sharlyan calls armed defense just war mongering in a different hat. So lets put the question to them.

Say Garlemald offers a bargain. They don't want to go to war either. Surrender, and we won't enlist your children into the foreign legions. You can be our engineers. Our strategists. (Only the 'real people' among you of course, beast tribes and such don't count). Maybe nothing has to change at all, you just have to let us build a military base and airport on the eastern side of the island we can use to wage war on Eorzea.

You can keep your hands clean. No blood has to be spilled today.

I dunno how describe it, but not pulling Phleg, Xande and Cloud of Darkness before the sprouts are done with their cutscene and in position with the rest of the group feels like an FFXIV version of the shopping cart litmus test.

It's not just CT. It's every fucking raid now. I was in first wing of Ivalice the other day, had a first time CS and the tank pulled. Then from the chat, paraphrased:

'some people just want to get the tomes and get the fuck out'

...okay so if you're in a rush, why the fuck did you sign up for a roulette? Alliance raid roulette? Why are you even trying to possibly speedrush something that with x amount of other random people has the possibility of taking a significant amount of time depending on everyone's else's level of skill or multiple wipes? There are other ways to get the mogtomes, go do those instead of inflicting your poor ass time decisions on the rest of us.

This kind of shit is the reason why we got unskippable cutscenes for the ending of ARR MSQ. Because people kept fucking rushing newbies. I was one of them. I didn't get to see any of those cutscenes until they became unskippable.

Have some fucking manners. Wait for newbies. Otherwise if we possibly get hit with unskippable cutscenes for every single raid don't fucking complain.

while many people are hoping Zenos Comes Back, and that is fine, i am personally hoping he stays dead but we get Azem Shard But Bad, an antagonist who will fully drive the connecting stake into the zenos/wol parallel. who are you but the decisions you make? when you are so powerful that you no longer answer to the systems humans live under -- when you have disconnected yourself and live separately from any specific world or culture or set of rules -- who do you become? the limitations of the influence of the Soul; at some point you have to take responsibility for your own actions. i know a lot of people are tired of azem/shards but i think this would be sooooo fun. heroism as a choice to be made over and over again, not something to be made once and coasted on, not an easy track that reinforces itself with its own momentum, not something to be inherited or predestined. pleeeaaase
