my hot take is that fully published historical fiction and whatever saccharine glorifying biopic that's just come out is in fact just as weird as rpf. ppl just don't want to admit it because rpf is dirty and wrong and low brow and a vaguely, loosely accurate, only accurate so far as it serves the story 'biography' is cool and interesting and high brow.

i feel the dan and phil relationship reveal video should be required reading for anyone beginning to ship real ppl- I've noticed that many ppl have been complaining about poor fandom etiquette, which is a complaint pretty much everywhere and predates me, but in hrpf i have been noticing it in the influx of new fans, especially in terms of willmack. There's some people that seem to not really comprehend that these are real people, and act accordingly. probably from a variety of factors- coming from non rpf spaces where it doesn't matter, the weird thing social media has been doing over the past couple years where every celebrity/influencer is unceasingly presented as a character and not a person, maybe skewing on the younger side and not having the fandom experience (especially in hrpf specifically- there's a distinct gap between real hockey player and gay blorbo that can be more challenging to navigate than initially expected).

I feel the phan video really puts into perspective the other side of this whole shipping thing, the one we never get to see, without any of the, for our purposes, unnecessary moral judgement that pretty much any other conversation about rpf includes. that video in fact made me more comfortable with rpf than i had been before, as i was able to build a moral framework within my consumption/creation of rpf that I was comfortable with.

I in no way expect or desire everyone to conform to my opinion and personal morals, but I think if you're engaging in rpf/shipping, you absolutely should take the time to think about what you're doing, why you're doing it, and the impact your actions will have on others.

wellll not to be the friend that's too woke and also not to reiterate stuff ive already yapped about on discord but the whole framework of hockey mom -> billet mom -> older teammate's wife -> getting ur own wag -> she has ur kids and becomes their hockey mom.... chilling. its own form of time being a flat circle. anndddd it's an almost seamless pipeline that can be stitched together such that these dudes feasibly never really have to go without domestic labor from the women in their lives

also as much as we talk about the reinforcement and performance of masculinity in (m)hrpf, mens hockey is also very very much about a certain kind of female role and a certain brand of femininity for the women in their lives. the uniformity of physical appearance in their partners with very few exceptions... a real madonna-whore complex of Wife vs roadie hookups or Girlfriend Material vs puck bunnies. tate mccrae being the amy dunne Cool Girl who likes Sports so she became a safe acceptable answer for celebrity crush for all of them. et ceteraaa ad nauseammmm

i understand ppl who got into hockey because of Heated Rivalry, but i actually got into hockey because of Yuri on Ice. somehow. I'm a bit of a magpie and I liked how pretty figure skating is but the inherent transience and violence of the sport- the insidious, invisible violence- freaked me out so I pivoted to hockey where you don't have to watch the supernova, Hockey players die slowly like real people do and there's blood enough on the ice already.

i'm planning to start watching the pwhl in the 26-27 season, but i don't live in North America so i can't really pick a team to support geographically, so if anyone knows of good guides for the teams in the pwhl, or wants to share propaganda for their team, that would be awesome!
