I chose to do the How to draw a tree tutorial because although I love to draw leaves and plants , I typically draw them in a cartoonish style. The Wiki how picture looks very realistic and I figured it would be good practice. I’ve never used a tutorial to draw for reference I usually draw from memory or just that the image I have in my head will look the same on paper. The steps in the tutorial were GIFS which was really helpful and simple. I can see myself using this technique for future background scenery. By using this as I guide I can see how I’d be able to even make more complex tree or even fruit full trees with more detail.

Journal 9

One of my favorite parts about this class is having guest speakers. Having Ryan Winet speak on his experience with comics was insightful for me at the time. Before this class I, I didn’t have the confidence to even call my little doodles art or comics. Having Ryan speak on his experience with comic creation assured me that is a learning process which takes time. Specifically, he mentioned that he had difficulty drawing so many pages initially because he was used to working on smaller projects. To attest to his challenges and imperfect process I could even see the sketch lines and eraser makes on his pieces. Around the time of his presentation we were just assigned our adaptation project and I was having a similar struggle. All in all, he was my favorite all semester and I really appreciate him taking the time out of his day to visit us.

I couldn’t decide whether to draw hands or expressions so I did some of both and both were equally difficult.

During this workshop I only had a few unanswered questions for my group mates. Firstly, I wondered if the comic should be boardless . The responses that boarders should be added to wide shots or to add dramatic effects. Secondly, I wondered if it should be a web comic or physical comic and we all agreed that it should be a webcomic. I also proposed the idea of a shorts plot to reduce the page amount. I’ve decided to shorten the story by introducing the birds as a couple instead of include he back story of how they met. I’ll still be able to lead up to a proposal and this actually makes for a better story.

Behold, a really rough draft of my first page. These are the first few scenes that show the bird being lonely and restless until he gets the idea to build another pedistol for himself. I actually drew out the entire comic and it came to 7 pages :/. My next hurdle is going to be figuring out how to shorten the plot & still include the best part (the proposal).

Based on feedback recived from the workshop I was to finalize a few pending ideas. I wanted to make both birds remain gender neutral but wasn’t sure which colors to use. Due to the amount of detail, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to color everything as perfectly as I want to. The group was able to help me decide to only highlight the birds and backgrounds in color but for the most part everything else can just be outlined.

Journal Post 8

For my final project, I’ve decided to elaborate on a short comic I wrote called The birds and The Birds. In short, it’s about a bird that finds love after being lonely for a very long time. I’m exploring ways to be more creative in pane arrangement by switching view prespectives throughout the story. The visuals will resemble that of Relish, in terms of soft solid colors with fine outlines. The initial idea/ story line was for it to be a proposal but I’m still figuring out where that fits in the story or how to lead up to it.Although, the page requirement is only 4 pages, I anticipate this to be lengthy because it’ll be wordless. I plan to practice more showing instead of telling through exaggerated facial expressions .

This weekend I went to a vegan ice cream shop called Greenery Creamy in downtown Orlando. I drew the setup by memory because it was a small, simple space. I drew it in my true drawing style so it wasn’t a difficult task. The first panel is the ice cream display, the second is the toppings counter and the third is the register.

This is a comic I did using my own style. I find it difficult to immitate the style of other artists because I don’t feel as my image is always true to the original style. With my own comics, they are typically just black and white with outlines.

When it comes to taking other people’s ideas , I tend to only take portions. This week my favorite comic was the one about the Death Toll I’m Puerto Rico. I like the way it played on a black and white concept . Most of the panels were shaded in only 2 colors similar to a black and white fashion, but incorporating engaging colors.

The most challenging part of the adaptation process has been establishing a consistent style throughout the comic. Because I’m still honing my own stlye, I had difficulty creating one for a specific purpose. My own comics outside of class are more abstract- sometimes half drawn things to let the reader fill in the blanks. For example, if I draw half of a leaf or just the outline of one the reader already knows what it is. Because my target audience is children I’ve had to make very bold solid images while still finding ways to be creative.

Now that the project is completed Im more confident in my skills. I now know that I can create a full story with illustrations awhile maintaining a purpose.

My adaptation project will be the how to grow and care for a pineapple text. I choose children as my target audience so I’m planning to only keep the core concepts of the text into about 6 steps. I haven’t decided on color options but I know I’d like it to be bright and fun to read.

In celebration of Customer Service Week, my job has been passing out daily flyers on how to be a better a better customer service person. After reading this particular flyer, I realized no one is ever taught how to treat a customer service person. Here, I’ve edited the flyer to include a few tips on how to make simple interactions comfortable to both parties. At first, I couldn’t quite figure out how to make it into a comic and how to edit the words without it having a negative tone. I used simple drawing styles to indicate the characters are employees, with name tags, aprons and badges. Also, I included word bubbles to make it more interactive.

Journal Post 4

As of right now, I’m still deciding on what style I’d like to use in the adaptation project. I’d like to use something simple enough that the message is conveyed clearly bit I also want the drawings to be very neat. My top topics right now are anything related to a how to tutorials, a ted talk and a medical comic. I’d like to do a medical graphic because it’ll be more challenging to convey the accuracy of the steps in the process but I also think how to grow a pineapple is going to be really fun to draw .
