To the people saying Hozier has a āfucked up mentalityā for this, I can see whenāre youāre coming from, but completely disagree.
What he is saying here isnāt something that is meant to be harmful or possessive. Although, if you really think about it, love often is. No matter how sane you are, loving a single person does make one a bit possessive. Thatās just human nature.
Now, that is not to say that a person has the right to own you or be toxically obsessed with you, because thatād be a complete violation of your basic human rights and could turn into abuse, but love is harmful most of the time. No oneās perfect. And when youāre in love with someone and you have feelings towards them, your first instinct is to want them to be as attached to you as you are to them.
The first line āI really like the idea of love as a violent actā not to the person you love, but against the worldā is misinterpreted so that it seems like he has a messed up mentality for thinking that love being violent is good, but when you see it like this, itās actually quite intriguing: love is peace, and comfort and all things fluffy and soft, right? Love is the opposite of violent: love is prosperity and beauty and never-ending happiness. So to say that love can -in any way- also be violent, is a reflection upon our own society. Because it is upon it that love becomes a form of violence.
Think about it; if love didnāt have society oppressing it, it wouldnāt have to fight back (become violent) in order to prevail. So in a way, love is rebellious and violent in its fight against people who judge its pureness. All the while also being all that is good in the world.
Furthermore, I think most of the confusion came from the last line in which he says āI love you- by extension, I hate all other things.ā
Now, I think this was meant to be read into a bit more. I can admit that I can see why it gives off āpossessive maniacā vibes, but I think what he he truly means is that by loving this person, you are rebelling against the world. And by that he means the society we are currently in. The norms we have to āfollowā in order to fit in which can, in many cases, be oppressive and controlling. Especially when it comes to loving who you want to freely.
So what the last line is really saying is āI choose you over what the rest of the world thinks or says.ā
He isnāt really āactingā like heās deep, he is deep. I recommend you go listen to his songs, youāll probably get what I mean.
(Theyāre poetry turned into beautiful songs filled with passion and love and pain and suffering a just- ugh. Heās really underrated.)
