A delivery driver pulled into the housing complex and got distracted looking at my hearse and hit a trash can and now I feel bad.
I would love to hear what people think about creating self-ship content with William Afton. I ask because I find writing for William Afton in self-ship formats to be difficult. I've written over 120+ chapters of a fanfic with this setting so clearly I still do it, however... I myself enjoy the concept of making him as accurate as possible but there in lies the problem. 1. I don't find it possible to make anything accurate to William Afton's character because I don't feel that we have enough canon information to accurately interpret him. There's a LOT of holes to fill. We as fanart creators have to make a lot of things up and usually it's biased to personal taste. 2. Self-ship, at the end of the day, should be enjoyable to the creator. Which means that not only can that get heavily personal and unique to the individual (thus different across each individual creator) but often times self-ship is for the purpose of feeling loved, cared for, and/or comforted, which is... difficult. With a character like William.
As I write, I enjoy what I write. But it never leaves my mind that it is impossible to truly write self-ship with William that doesn't in some way break his character to suit my needs . He is just far too self-focused, abusive, neglectful, etc. He's a terrible person. I enjoy the challenge of making him as realistic as possible (based on my interpretation) within that realm (which often involves including abuse because I myself cannot picture any William Afton relationship being completely healthy), but ultimately I am very much aware that I am bending the accuracy in order to make it satisfactory to the self.
Does anyone else think such things when they create self-ship content?
to be honest, most of the content i write is primarily to satisfy my own need for indulgence; it feels as though i’m simply creating content that suits my own tastes. i know everyone has a different perspective on a character like william, but i can be—uh well, a bit strict and picky when interacting with people whose interpretations differ from mine ... but i am aware anybody can be right or either wrong, even myself. even so, I respect either ways that's fine.
i’ve been deeply attached to him ever since sister location came out—though, there were times when i lost that hyperfixation and drifted away, only to return when the first fnaf movie announcement dropped. even then, i didn't really care much about the movie itself; more mainly interested in the games lore because it was what captivated me. especially william afton. but to be fair, we don't know much about him or his backstory regardless of the universe so we all have our own headcanons to fill in the gaps. and that is what keeps me attached to him ^^ (but it also made me feel frustrated not to have enough information about his character to understand and to feel more. like, we don't have any canon or close-to-canon motive for him to explain well).
my mutual and i have often rambled to each other about our different interpretations and shared our thoughts; i likes the reason we both like him, he's some eccentric theater owner vibe, have an weird attachment to his own suit rabbit related and some kind of theatre drama shits. he's a pretty fun character aside.
as for selfship eh i don't talk about mine much, rarely. instead, i mostly just create aus and fanfic for myself privately, my oc and william (none of them have any happy ending).
i know that deep down, everyone has that sappy side that desire to feel loved, and connected to a truly terrible person :')) including myself. ironic. mayhaps there's a reason they could relate to, or they just treated it a little story to play with and change,... it's only a fictional world after all. we can just write what we want it to be as long as there's no harming.

This is the first time I've created proper self-ship content, before it's always been by way of an oc because I just couldn't imagine the character loving me. And I think in some way the open-endedness of William's character has helped with that. There's so much we don't know, or assume based on what information we do have, that filling in the blanks allows you to find a comfortable space or quirks of character that could reasonably allow for it.
Of course my version is different to the fanon consensus (and likely the canon version) of his character, so I refer to him as an alternate interpretation to be safe. Partly because I enjoy humanising him to a certain degree. Yes he's a terrible person, and takes pleasure in what he does, but he has had things happen that made him choose the path he's on.
Most importantly, we're having fun and not hurting anyone, so as long as that's still true we can interpret things however we want.
I agree with the replies so far as well! Particularly when folks have mentioned that for fnaf canon is already very deeply flawed. I definitely know that Scott didn't plan out the whole series from game one, so there are a lot of holes. In every aspect of fnaf and the characters especially suffer because of it. With fnaf especially I approach character work in fics very differently because we really do not know much, and will probably never have a complete picture. I also think having wildly different aus or hcs compared to canon is fine. When I tag anything with aus and hcs I know for myself that I am deviating from canon in my writing (sometimes very wildly). On Tumblr I haven't had any issues with other fans thankfully. And it is completely ok to be extremely indulgent in writing for self shipping! I know that I am when I write as well!
