I’ll probably be leaving tumblr soon

Hey y’all. In light of tumblr’s new LGBT censorship policy, as well as the horrific amount of discourse and the fact that I have very few followers, I will most likely be leaving tumblr for good very soon. This site was great when I was a kid, but it feels too weird to be a 19 year old in a space meant for 15 year olds, and I can find most of the content I like here elsewhere now anyway. 

Nobody ever really reads or interacts with my posts, but if you have another site that you like feel free to recommend it to me. I don’t think I have any mutuals that I’m not already friends with on facebook so... yeah. It’s been fun y’all.

the new tumblr “safe mode” is shit

so tumblr recently unveiled it’s new safe mode that blocks “sensitive content” on dashboards and completely on mobile.

if you’re under 18, there’s no way to turn it off. 

it wouldn’t be too much of a problem if it was just like blocking p/orn or ns/fw art or anything, but, as it’s tumblr and therefore not a functioning website, it blocks like everything else except that stuff

for example, it blocks a ton of posts having to do with anything lgbt-related…. because kids need to be protected from the big scary gays amirite….

and also it blocks a ton of other innocent stuff like comic edits that have nothing inappropriate at all about them??

tldr; tumblr is censoring non nsf/w gay content just for the hell of it. you can let them know how you feel about that here

So I commissioned theloserfish to draw Captain Rivka in one of those typical movie-poster pose where the guy is brandishing his weapon looking all tough and the female lead is draped around his feet, but somehow Shulamit and Aviva turned into the best part of the picture because Ladies Kissing.

Anyway, according to local rumor, on Yom Kippur when Rivka goes to the temple to atone, the temple atones instead. And on Passover, she would have needed only one plague – herself!

What really sucks about the way Joss Whedon writes is that he sort of has this idea that if he writes about women being strong and confident, that is all it takes for women to appreciate his work. Like, even if the villain constantly belittles a woman for being a woman and people are constantly harassing her and sexualizing her, it’s okay because she’s strong and she can take it.

The biggest difference between Whedon’s version of Wonder Woman and Jenkins is that in Whedon’s version Wonder Woman is A Woman. She (and the audience) must be constantly aware that she is a Woman, that she is Sexy, that she is overcoming incredible odds because she has the terrible disadvantage of Being Born A Woman.

Whereas in Jenkins’ film Diana simply exists. There are some points made by other characters about her being a woman, like when Steve won’t sleep with her because he feels it’s improper, or when his secretary says, “Oh yes, put specs on her, like after that she won’t be the most beautiful woman you’ve ever seen”, but Diana is almost completely unaware of her status as a Dreaded Woman. Her excitement over a baby? She’s literally never seen one before. Her little makeover seen? Spends the whole thing looking for something comfortable she can fight in. She basically never mentions the difference between men and women, never even says that women are better or whatever because she was raised by them. 

Joss Whedon would have never let Wonder Woman forget she was a Woman. She would have constantly been making comments about it, wether positive or negative, as would everyone around her. In Whedon’s heyday that might have flown a lot better, but now women seem to be a little sick of grrrrl power. They just want power. They just want to exist, both on screen and in life, without constant reminders that they are Women and that they must pay for that at every turn.

King Leopold II, as only one example, had a hand in the Congolese rubber trade. Enslaved people would be made to collect rubber sap on their bodies. When it dried it would be peeled off along with their skin, leaving them severely wounded. They were forced to collect as much rubber as possible as quickly as possible because their loved ones were being held in the custody of Belgians; their lives were threatened and the women were assaulted.

The colony in The Congo was in fact a “personal” colony of King Leopold II, not even a colony of the Belgian state, and therefore even more gruesome atrocities were committed. There are accounts of families being held hostage so one could work, and if a slave did not bring enough of a good back they would have their hands amputated. It was so bad that the Belgian state (white, patriarchal, imperialistic and not that great by itself) took possession of it from Leopold because they thought he was being too inhumane. Now, if an inherently racist and imperialistic government that thinks Africans are inferior to Europeans forcefully takes a colony from you for being too inhumane, you’ve got to be pretty fucking terrible.

let’s not minimize the holocaust and the millions of jews that died to make it seem like it’s trivial. calling them europeans meaning they’re “white” and you think that’s why we learn about it not because it’s so the US and other allied powers can pat themselves on their back. it’s not about who died since those countries clearly don’t give a shit about jews or rromani ppl. you can educate everyone on leopold without making the holocaust seem unimportant.

I don’t think OP was trying to minimise the holocaust & its victims but nevertheless it’s so revisionist to describe them as European & therefore white & therefore having some sort of white privilege. The Jewish & Romani victims of the holocaust were not seen as white Europeans, they were specifically killed for NOT being white. White nationalists & nazis saw them (& still do) as foreigners & a threat to the white race. Even in the US until the 1940s Jews were seen as a distinct racial group separate from whites by immigration officials.

Raise awareness about other genocides without shitting on holocaust victims or making them seem privileged.
