the biggest mental wall you’ll run into in RP—or any other endeavor really—is always gonna be, “What am I doing wrong?”

at some point or another you’ll spend a lot of effort on something—a post, an edit, an event, a blog, whatever—and it won’t get recognized no matter how much you push it. when it only happens once maybe you’ll get discouraged but carry on. the important thing to know is it’ll keep happening.

it’s not really anybody’s fault and this is just how social media is. things weren’t always this way but they are now and it’s platform invariant. it doesn’t matter if you’re posting fics on AO3 or putting up videos on YouTube or writing tweets on Twitter. the real engagement rate versus views is always less than 10%. usually 1%. sometimes less.

so eventually you’ll hit that wall and start to question yourself. that’s just how our brains work. it’s your self-awareness kicking in. your Default Mode Network. the thing is that that system can betray you and get you into trouble and it’s exactly encapsulated in the question itself.

odds are you aren’t doing anything wrong.

odds are it has nothing to do with you. people get busy with real life. there are time zone differences. interests shift. interests don’t align. people are nervous. people are anxious. people don’t know what to say. people don’t know what to do. people don’t think what they have to say matters.

it almost certainly has nothing to do with you the vast majority of the time but it’s hard to keep that in mind when you’re the center of your own universe. we’re not built for that kinda perspective.

what we can do is stop ourselves from asking that question if there are no immediately obvious answers to it. we can learn to be kind to ourselves. and more than that we can reach out to try to make a difference for others. everyone can only do what they can at any given time—no one can give 100% all the time—and only you will know what you can do. you only have to answer to yourself for that.

but be kind to yourself and if you can be kind to others too. together we can make things even just a little better.

i’ve seen a number of comments and tags where people feel that they must swallow or repress their anger in order to engage in kindness. that is not at all what i am recommending here. radical kindness is an expression of anger. it is not passive. it is not repressive. it does not require you, in any way, to forgive those that have fucked you up. it does not require you to be quiet.

it just requires that you be kind. viciously. vengefully. you fight back. you plant flowers. give to charity. play games. pet someone’s dog. scream into the dark. paint and write and dance, tell jokes, sing songs, bake cookies. you have been hurt and you don’t have to deny that hurt. you just have to recognize it in other people, and take their hand, and say: no more. enough. fuck this. no more.

You can be kind and fuel it with rage.
