I just learned about this recently from a Viking reenactor! Indigo dye isn't blue until it oxidizes, so when you dye with indigo your cloth or thread doesn't come out of the water blue, it comes out and then reacts with the oxygen in the air and seems to spontaneously turn blue in front of your eyes. It's a really cool process to witness.

when discussing the comparative merits of crafts and why or why not they were used at various times in history, it is VITAL to remember that we didn't put wheels on suitcases until the 1970s. Sometimes a technique would be great, but you just haven't thought of it. If you haven't invented knitting it doesn't matter how knitting compares to weaving. You cannot choose a method you do not know. Tools and techniques have to be thought of before they can be used. I am saying this several ways in the hopes of being understood. Everything has to be invented. If it hasn't been invented, it won't be on your list of options for things to use.

wheeled suitcases were a complicated issue that also tied into materials science (the wheels need to be small, light, and strong. historically wheelwrights only got to pick two of three.) and classism (the rich don't carry their own suitcases and the poor can't necessarily afford to pay more for convenience). an invention doesn't just need to be thought of by one clever guy, it also has to make economic sense for a society to adopt it.

I think it's also misleading to say, in isolation, that suitcases didn't have wheels until the 1970s. Because I think when most people hear that, they think people just had to carry around all their heavy bags, the way you'd probably end up doing a lot in modern times if you had a non-wheeled suitcase.

But medieval people had carts, including both horse-drawn carts and also much smaller carts designed to be pulled by a human... and even tiny ones designed to be pulled by dogs. They had wheelbarrows. In some places and times they had boats, and platforms with pulleys to get bags onto higher floors, or sleds.

Since I got a handcart (think, like... a shopping trolley except it is pulled instead of pushed, steers well and can fold up) I have actively preferred using bags that don't have wheels! I like the fact that I can just toss stuff into the cart casually and move it around casually; I don't have to carefully pack it and then zip it up and then move it, the way I'd have to with a wheeled suitcase. I like that the angles don't change in my cart, so if I put an open container into the cart then it'll just stay upright and not spill, whereas if I put the same container in a suitcase it'd get messy fast. I like that once I've taken a bag out of the cart, it's just a flexible fabric bag that is easier to stuff into a locker or hide under my chair, since there's no rigid frame or wheels attached to the bag itself. I like being able to easily distribute stuff - like just wheeling the cart full of drinks up to some friends and telling them to each take a drink, and they can just reach into the cart. I like the freedom to use whatever box or bag I have on hand - like transporting sewing stuff in the same leather box I use for the sewing kit, or using a pillowcase to transport clothes so it can double as a pillow, or just leaving new purchases in whatever bag they came in - and I don't have to repack things into a special wheeled suitcase for transport.

...unfortunately the modern world is not always set up to allow me to use my preferred solution of a handcart: I generally can't take my handcart on a plane, and it's frequently really annoying to navigate multiple heavy keycard doors which the cart doesn't quuuuiiiite neatly fit through. If I was a medieval farmer though? Yeah, I wouldn't invent a wheeled suitcase because it would just be worse than a handcart.

Of course this does not mean that wheeled suitcases aren't convenient for some people. But I'm not actually convinced it was better for society to develop in the direction of "you can buy a suitcase with wheels (sometimes pricey)" rather than "most public spaces have several handcarts available to borrow, and everywhere generally has elevators and wide doorways with lightweight doors so it's easy to pull a handcart around"

If you show up at my practice, I just kinda keep offering you armour to try on (no pressure) and asking if you wanna hit me (no pressure) and figuring out which helmets will fit you (no pressure) until suddenly you're kicking ass and you have plausible deniability about all of it

Glittergedon

One time I said I wanted a glittery shield, and it broke our Shire. On this, the day of the Great Glitter Discourse, I wish all of those veterans of the Mica War, in the Shire and beyond, a Happy GLITTERGEDON.

No. 😭 This all happened prior to my authorization for sword and shield, when I was only a combat archer. I have made inquiries to commission my own, but apparently glitter is still as divisive as ever.

I did, however, orchestrate the creation of one for my Knight, who was vehemently against glitter, puppies, and apple pie. Okay, maybe not the last two, but one could infer based on how much he was against shiny joy. Anyway, since it was a birthday gift from several of his Household, he HAD to accept it.

I haven't seen it since. Despite my offer to mount it for display.
