I deeply despise when people mistake the sword pull in Utena as a gay yuri moment, because the sword pull is meant to represent exploitation. Utena doesn’t pull the sword out of anthy because “OMG YURI!” she pulls the sword out of Anthy to represent that’s she participating in the same system that oppresses Anthy. In fact, if you look at the other sword pulls in the series (because it isn’t unique to Utena and Anthy), you could argue that the sword pull could work as a rape metaphor, or even general metaphor for violation.

This circles back to a general issue I have of people looking at Utena and any references of it in media as some sort big gay indicator to prove how queer a piece of media is, as it’s usually people who either haven’t seen the show or even understand it talking like this. I’ve recently seen people apply this to algaea from HSR, and it’s like. There’s much more to analyse about the reference other than “She’s gay”. And I also feel like it reduces Utena to just its yuri. And while Utena and Anthy’s relationship is literally the core of Utena, It ignores that Utena is also a story of patriarchy and abuse. Utena and Anthy’s relationship may be the core of Utena, but so is Dios/Akio and Anthy’s and the system they’re in.

Wally looked away from his phone, eyes slant before focusing on them fully, "Y/N?" he was quiet, " I came by for an art gallery. Its happening outdoors nearby some art studios."

"In the factory destrict?" Y/N had heard people talking about it. They felt that they should have known more.

"Yeah, isn't that why you're here?" He laughed sliding his phone into the pocket of his loosely fitted black jeans. His arms crossed now, a smile on his lips.

Y/N shifted on their feet and looked down the street, "No, I wanted to come out for a walk. I wanted to.. see."

"Oh, see what?" Wally spoke each syllable fully round. His tongue careful and practiced as each letter glided over his tongue and slid from the edge.
